A winter of very expensive heating and little food?

I’ve been vegetarian since I was eleven.
I feel very much the same as you Alegrias, but I would prefer it if my husband didn’t eat meat.
I do all the shopping and I do try to buy meat with the best chances of having had a better existence eg gambolling opportunities

Home slaughtered animals can only legally be slaughtered after being stunned under Animal Welfare rules so back to square one.

So what do the farmers mean when they say they'll have to kill the animals on the farm 25Avalon? Will they do it themselves or will they have to get someone in to do it?

Assuming we get to that situation, of course.

Anybody got a decent recipe for nettle soup and stewed chicken bones which doesn't require any fuel to cook? Maybe somebody can remember how to rub two sticks together?

You don't have to use hay, growsuff (but if we weren't 150 miles apart I could give you loads , things like expanded polystyrene packaging would be fine. Anything that's a good insulator. I've often thought about trying it myself, just out of interest. but maybe I'll have to do it in earnest this winter.

idk Alegrias1 but there are very strict rules and regulations about slaughtering animals. Farmers can slaughter an animal for their own consumption and no one else’s. If they shot all their animals in the head, how would the carcasses be disposed of? BSE carcasses that are burnt are done so with strict controls. Burying in a lime pit? The health implications are huge.

You could always try the packing peanuts. Just check they are biodegradable.

My vegetarianism is a personal choice and I'd never dream of criticising someone who wasn't veggie. DH isn't veggie! I have absolutely no problem whatsoever with people who eat meat or the farmers who provide it.

I wouldn't think of critising someone who is either Alegrais.

I do see the point when it comes to the climate crisis. On the other hand there are so many fruits and vegtables I can't eat (can't digest) that my diet would become even more difficult.

In his later years my father did say he wouldn't shoot deer and boar as he had done in his 20s. However, my parents were in Germany at the time and we had gone from "no fraternising" to "please make friends". He went out with some of the Germans who had become his friends and, as I said, shot for the pot. Even though this was a few years after the end of the war in Europe, many of their "pots" would have still been pretty empty. He was also a early forager - before the term was coined. He would take me mushrooming and also, when we lived near the sea, would bring home crustations - I never wanted to know about those. He also grew his own veg so he was more self-sufficient than green

There are exceptions though, Kosh and Halal? I don't think either allow for the animal being stunned.

I have a lot of respect for vegans. I live with a dairy farm at the back of my house and I think the dairy industry is as cruel as the meat industry, maybe worse. I hate it when the calves are taken away from their mothers. The cries from the mothers and the calves are heartbreaking.

Those who are calling for utilities to be nationalised, this would mean that they would be run by the Government, the one that a lot of posters despise. Just a thought…

I just realised a Kosher or Halal butcher isn't going to be much use with the pig situation.

If they were to nationalise essential services, one might then think that they weren't quite as useless as we currently think they are.

The shortages seem to be regional in nature, and obviously where you live is at the far end of the scale.
M&S chocolate is wonderful ( I can’t have it unfortunately.)
My DD ( with a size 10 figure is a chocaholic and would be in a murderous mood if she couldn't buy any.?

My son has come round and he popped into Lidl and says they've had a big restock today. I'll have to pop over later and stock up.

As far as the CO2 is concerned, I doubt that the government will allow this to be a problem for long ( if at all) so worries about farmers/ abattoirs having nothing to stun animals with will be unfounded.
