A winter of very expensive heating and little food?

What is happening about this? I must admit I feel worried.

If this is true and will be paid for by those who have lost in-work benefits and are paying higher NI, how on earth will they get through the winter.

I'm a Pensioner and not rich enough to expect them to do anything for me.

H I’ve replied to Maizie but it was WWW that made the comment about cutting back on plant growth.

Sorry.

No problem. grin

But it is in the media. The Financial Times, but you have to have a subscription to read it

Just catching up with the thread as been de-cobwebbing the conservatory roof and wiping down the paintwork ready for winter ?

Re your questioning my comment about farmers cutting back.

I can’t do links, but it was in the FT

No shortages of CS gas or meat here in Belgium and no empty shelves. I read the UK press and also Belgian press and I never see these frantic articles.

I don’t think CS gas is at issue though is it? Isn’t it what the French (and other nationalities) police spray at rioters?
2-chlorobenzylidene malononitrole or “CS” is a white crystalline solid when pure
 it is used by police forces as a temporary incapacitant spray
 when released, CS gas will disperse into the atmosphere in a matter of minutes
 exposure to CS gas may cause intense tear production, eye pain, chest tightness, coughing and sneezing
 skin contact will lead to burning and stinging with possible redness and blistering
 treatment is rarely needed because people usually recover within 15-20 minutes
 physical injury to the eyes may occur if CS gas is sprayed directly into them at a very close range

You can keep it!

Just watched the post Brexit video.

I didn’t laugh or cry just felt and enormous rage at the lies that people believed and are still clinging into.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 19-Sept-21 12:08:15

Meat processors say that there is a very possibility that neither chicken nor pork will be available in a couple of weeks time.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 19-Sept-21 12:09:51

It can’t be that bad though can it? Because if it was it would be on the news wouldn’t it?

I just watched the video too and I seriously thought that someone had put that together after the event, somebody anti-Brexit, being sarcastic. But no, it seems it was a real campaign video. sad

not experienced any shortages in France either oh except
for a lack of submarine orders

Barmeyoldbat Sun 19-Sept-21 13:47:53

All I can say is it is going to be a hard winter for many, and the government is lucky it has COVID to blame instead of Brexit and the incompetent, lying, self serving politicians who are running the country.

Alegrias1 Sun 19-Sept-21 13:53:13

I find it more scary that they are incompetent than any of the other things Barmeyoldbat. If they were lying and self serving, at least I'd think they knew what was going on, and that eventually somebody with a conscience would pop up amongst them. But I do actually think that they are just completely incompetent and couldn't run a p***up in a brewery, And we're stuck with them during the biggest crises that most of us will ever see.

Barmeyoldbat Sun 19-Sept-21 14:16:34

Yes I think you are right Alegraise1, I was being generous with their intellect saying they were lying and self serving.

I wonder how much of this is scaremongering by the media? Today they are saying that in less than two weeks there will be shortages of meat due to problems with the cost of CO2 which is used in the meat trade - not sure why it is necessary though! At first I thought oh dear, I eat a lot of meat as I’m not fond of vegetables so for about two seconds I wondering if I should buy extra this week. Then I realised I was being ridiculous, I don’t have a big freezer and mine is full now and anyway, I won’t starve if I cannot have as much meat!

But if other people read the newspapers today and now start stockpiling meat then that will create shortages, thus proving these articles correct!

Some of the CO2 is used for murdering animals.

Sort of like a version of a concentration camp.

We had our 3-4 weekly grocery delivery today and there were no missing items although they had substituted a different brand of crumpets (but given me an extra packet as compensation).

Jaxjacky Sun 19-Sept-21 14:33:34

I’ve seen no shortages here in the south of England and food deliveries have been complete.
Might buy an extra ticket in the pub meat draw, just in case ?

BlueBelle Sun 19-Sept-21 15:03:16

If it’s a very cold winter I ll put extra clothes on and up my hot water bottles if they don’t have my favourites on the shelves I ll buy something different
We all knew Brexit would bring this about and now ?perhaps the Brexiteers will understand more too ….add to that Covid lockdowns and you can see where we are heading but there is no point in getting upset or worried over it
Perhaps not so many animals will get murdered EP there’s hoping

So far I ve seen no shortages on the shelves in east anglia
Adapt ….. Brits are supposed to be good at that

Casdon Sun 19-Sept-21 15:34:11

A bit too flippant as far as the very elderly are concerned Bluebelle. My parents are in their nineties, and too vulnerable to adapt as you put it. We children will help out with their gas bills and food so they will manage, but not all have families to help them, and very elderly people on their own don’t move much, so even with extra layers of clothing they will not all survive, particularly if it’s a harsh winter.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 19-Sept-21 15:49:45

And of course Sunak is intent on inflicting austerity.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 19-Sept-21 15:58:04

Alegrias we got there first!

Does that really matter?

Dinahmo it was a triumph for British science and Boris et al had the foresight to sponsor it and to offer sufficient quantities for us all. I was impressed.

Farmers are not cutting back on plant growth.

What some are doing is switching from crops which involved cheap intensive labour to ones that involve less or where machines can do more of the work.

Some are planning a return to the Pick Your Own that was around before cheap EU labour was available.

Or maybe some young people will actually begin to think that Agriculture could again become a career. That would be a good thing, don’t you think?

I've just spent 5 days on a campsite based on a Pick-your-Own fruit farm, but they had to remain closed for 4 of the 5 days "due to staff shortages".

Make of that what you will!

MamaCaz Sun 19-Sept-21 18:12:00

I would also like to add that everything around, from bus services to shops to eateries was also clearly severely impacted by lack of workforce!
