May I join as I’ve made some bad choices in my life but don’t have a regional accent ?

I’ve caught up again and I’m still taken with the level of judgement and snobbery.
Lemingrive’s suggestion that Harold Wilson was from Yorkshire , had the accent but must have had the rough edges knocked off him, almost made me lol.
Miss Adventure. Hope you’re feeling a bit brighter today. We could always start a gransnet cafe for those of us who made bad lifestyle choices and have regional accents. We could invite Angela, she’s a grannie now

Because I'm a single parent (bad lifestyle choice) who speaks in a way that probably grates on others. (Lack of education, apparently)
I find it offensive, it puts me off using the site, and I'm feeling quite fragile lately.
That's why.
I question why I would want to spend time here.

Miss A, people who use things like accent or educational snobbery to make themselves feel superior have clearly not achieved much in their own right, or they would value achievement instead.

The way we speak, and where we go to school (and to a large extent to university) are decided for us by circumstances beyond our control. How we treat others, on the other hand, is down to our character, and says a lot more about us than superficial things like pronunciation ever will.

I don't know about people voting for candidates with posh accents but when I was about 11 my mother told me she voted Conservative because it made her a better class of person.

I knew nothing about politics but I knew our place in the Class System and just thought, "Well, good luck with that Mum".

I don't know if the phrase had been invented by the early 50's but we were definitely The Undeserving Poor.

I don't necessarily agree with Angela Rayner's politics but you have to admire her guts. Not everyone could stand up in the House of Commons against Dominic Raab or any other politician come to that. I saw her a while ago up against Boris and she did well. I even got the feeling that Boris rather respected her stand. I don't see why she shouldn't say 'quid' instead of 'pound' either. I do that myself and I'm from darn sarf.

David Davis went to a good uni, Warwick, and studied a joint honours degree in Molecular Science/Computer Science. Then did an MBA at the London Business School and then on to Harvard. Not a privileged background, his mother was single when he was born, big issue back in 1948. Doesn't sound thick to me. I might not agree with his politics but calling him thick seems a bit spiteful from Dominic Cummings who had an easier start in life.

The Black Country accent is meant to be the most Saxon isn't it?

Dominic Cummings described David Davis, when he was the UK Brexit negotiator, as 'thick as mince'.

I'd never heard of the expression before.

He's cleverer than that twit (sic) Cummings!

I wonder who decides what talking properly actually means? We've had people saying how they dislike the Birmingham accent and I've read that Shakespeare would have had a strong Birmingham accent or at least a West Midlands accent. Anyone going to argue with his mastery of the English language?

A journalist recently showed her old interview with Margaret Thatcher when she was PM, and the journalist had just arrived in London from Scotland. She conducted it in a very (fake) RP voice, because she thought that's what was expected. So sad.

She makes me cringe. If she wants to be taken seriously she should learn how to speak properly. Having said that I don't dislike her and I think she makes some good points and is passionate about the cause. Just stop saying things like 'quid' and 'scumbag' Angela!

Not sure if this means she should talk like a southerner or use formal English. Either way she'd stop being a role model for working-class girls. She talks like a normal Stockport woman, and why shouldn't she?

I have criticised Lindsay Hoyle ( Speaker) before now because I can barely hear a word he says, he does have a strong accent but it’s more the fact that he sort of swallows his words.

I don't think there is any need to place anyone in cotton wool, so that's why I have criticised other mps.
It seems people aren't quite so keen on that, though.

It's a terrible pity when women will happily tear down another who has done exceptionally well.
It seems we don't need men to pull us apart, when we happily do it to eachother.

There is no need to place Rayner ( or any other successful woman) into a nest of cotton wool. Women should feel free to criticise other women or men, and frequently on GN, we do.
