Sorry ‘is’ not ‘was’.

My thoughts are with his family what a terrible shock.

What an appalling thing to happen. It makes you realise how vulnerable public figures are just going about their business. I feel so sorry for him and for his family.

rafichagran Fri 15-Oct-21 21:01:31

My thoughts are with his family too. Senseless murder.

I used to manage community nursing services in this area it was extremely risky with a lot of violent crime. I am so sorry this has happened to this gentleman and his family. RIP.

A 25 year old Somalian, someone we have given sanctuary too, presumably, what an absolute disgrace

Scones Sat 16-Oct-21 09:12:48

The BBC are saying he is a British National.

FannyCornforth Sat 16-Oct-21 09:32:25

Scones that is right

tickingbird Sat 16-Oct-21 09:32:31

Regardless, it’s more Islamic terrorism.

lavenderzen Sat 16-Oct-21 09:36:20

Of course it's terrorism - a wife without a husband, children without a father - absolutely dreadful - lives changed for ever - my heart breaks for them all.

FannyCornforth Sat 16-Oct-21 09:39:47

It is being treated as a terrorist attack

GrannyGravy13 Sat 16-Oct-21 09:43:01

Sir David wasn’t my MP, but like most folks involved with any Charity in this part of Essex our paths crossed on occasions. He was kind and knowledgeable and always happy to engage with people.

He will be sorely missed, I am verging between sadness and anger that yet again someone devoted to public service has been violently murdered whilst doing the job they loved.

FannyCornforth Sat 16-Oct-21 09:55:07

GG like others I’ve been learning a lot about Mr Amess, and he really does sound like the most honourable and decent of men.
He was involved in diverse causes such as fire safety in high rise buildings; fox hunting; and care for women with endometriosis.
He always seemed to be on the right side of things

timetogo2016 Sat 16-Oct-21 10:07:53

RIP Sir David Amess.
My heart goes out to his family.
An Islamic extremist has been arrested for his murder i believe.

Chris Bryant MP, following this atrocious murder, wrote a good article in The Guardian today, mainly discussing the security, or lack of it around MPs, but also pointing out the toxic nature of social media, which everyone is well aware of , particularly those in public life. He said, and I completely agree, that those who issue such threats only do it under the cloak of anonymity. Oh to expose such cowards! who seem to get away with saying whatever without censorship, where's the accountability shock

I feel very saddened by this MPs awful killing as I was when Jo Cox was taken in the same way.

glammanana Sat 16-Oct-21 10:26:58

Just awful and such a good man he would go out of his way to help anyone who had a problem whatever their political views.
RIP Sir David Amess
Condolences to his family & friends.

tickingbird Sat 16-Oct-21 10:35:57

Whilst I agree with the comments regarding the toxic nature of social media, in this instance I don’t think it has any bearing on this terrible incident if it turns out to be Islamic terrorism. It could be that the attacker was groomed online or within his community. I just wonder what the aim is, what do they want?

Ultimately a thoroughly decent man has lost his life and a family are left devastated. It’s heartbreaking.

henetha Sat 16-Oct-21 10:39:11

This is dreadful. Anyone in the public eye seems to have to endure awful threats and actual violence these days. What an intolerant society we are.
It sounds like Sir David was a really good man. R.I.P.

I was listening to an MP last night who mentioned his lovely smile and it reminded me of when I met him. The first thing you saw was that wonderful smile. A terrible loss to some women in Southend who he personally supported.
He drove my daughters friend to the Houses of Parliament when the woman was lobbying on the mesh implant horror.

A good man. a nice man. but a supporter of many good causes and many bad causes.
