A European Union-funded campaign promoting the freedom to wear the Muslim headscarf has been shelved after an official complaint from staunchly secular France.

I agree with France on this.
Do you?

My DiL is French Muslim. She agrees with the ban on religious coverings in France.

Well she is entitled to feel this way. Even a colourful scarf that leaves the face free? Why?

I found this article about women in Iran before and after the Islamic Revolution rather sad

I don't like seeing them. They immediately make the woman stand out as someone different and in a negative way.. I think in a non Muslim country they should try to fit in .

Why?

Not in school, not in any State jobs- even a colourful scarf.
Any student turning up at school with a scarf will be turned away and expelled, same for teachers.

I think people should be free to wear what they like bit ironic as you are not free to wear a headscarf in France but you have to wear a mask indoors

People are allowed to wear headscarves in France.

Covering most of the skin can cause Vitamin D deficiency.

JaneJudge Wed 03-Nov-21 21:01:19

how could a hijab cause health problems?

That's not true, how many go to Turkey lol

My friend has lived in Algeria for several years, short hair, no covering.

Probably some countries or possibly areas in those counties where people might be but I don't think it's expected most places of non Muslims

Both a hijab and burka can cause health problems - I have read.

prejudiced much?

But if I go to a Muslim country, I would be expected to, and would be quite happy to, cover my head/legs/arms. So why is it prejudiced to expect others to conform to our norms when in our country?

agreed that the burka should be banned, and any clothing that hides the eyes.

but but.....bannng clothing won't change people's beliefs, it will just set more limits on what women are allowed to do....and how do you tell who is wearing a hijab and who is m=not moslem but is covering their hair? I prefer to wear a scarf rather than a face mask as a a covid face covering, should I not be allowed to do this? In winter, when its cold I do the same, either wear a hat and a face covering scarf, or wrap a scarf around my head and face. Should i not be allowed to do this either?

JaneJudge Wed 03-Nov-21 20:17:48

I have women who work with me and my daughter who wear a hijab (headscarf) and they take it off in our home/ work if no men are there, presumably they trust us though? I wouldn't be bothered if they left it on or otherwise smile

France is right on this one. We should follow suit.

confusedI've just googled this and a hijab is traditionally a garment that covers the upper body including the face.

These days the niqab and burka are normally treated as being different from the hijab. The first covers the head and chest but allows the eyes to be seen, the second is all enveloping covering the woman entirely.
The hijab ( in its various forms of Shayla, Hijab Amira, Chador, Khimar and Hijab) is just a headscarf of various dimensions worn to cover the hair but expose the face, much the same as the Queen often wears.

Yes secularism / laïcité is really important in public life and no religion or religious symbolism in state schools. Part of the reason for half days or no school on Wednesdays was so they could learn the catechism, though I have never seen much of it in practice.
When I was teaching in primary schools I once had a long conversation with a teacher who wanted me to teach the children the national anthem, but decided God Save the Queen might not be a good idea. (I didn't argue!)
The separation of church and state in schools dates from the end of the nineteenth century.
