A European Union-funded campaign promoting the freedom to wear the Muslim headscarf has been shelved after an official complaint from staunchly secular France.

I agree with France on this.
Do you?

france has strict rules on this, not displaying religious affiliation items in certain public settings, since the time of the republic.
but we do not. so in some ways it's more complicated here.

I'm just not sure why wearing a hijab should be a problem, so long as it's worn with free will. My Jewish friends always cover their hair when they go out. Why is that any different to a hijab? And at what point do we dictate what an individual can/cannot wear?

If they won’t tolerate displays of religious affiliation, I think they should also disallow dog collars for clergy and nuns’ veils, turbans and yarmulkes. Actually, I’d prefer to allow people to wear what they choose.

My concern is the fathers, brothers and husbands that will not allow women out without a covering.
France is creating a prison for these poor women.

I think people should be free to wear what they like bit ironic as you are not free to wear a headscarf in France but you have to wear a mask indoors

I think hijabs should be fine and that women should wear what they want, as long as it is their choice.

It covers no more than a hat and a scarf does so it seems silly to allow one and not the other

i think all those conspicuous symbols of religious affiliation are banned from being worn in French state schools, and from workers in govt buildings.
someone from france will tell us the details.

No I do not agree. I think the burka should be banned however.

If a woman chooses to wear a scarf or hijab, it is none of my, or your, business.

Kali2 Wed 03-Nov-21 18:05:41

Jewish women in France cover their hair, so do Catholic Italian and Spanish women, and nuns are totally free to wear their habit. The hypocrisy is vast. And this when a significant proportion of French families send their kids to private Catholic schools that are State subsidised!

Urmstongran Wed 03-Nov-21 18:10:32

Actually I’ve given this more thought.

I agree with the hijab. A scarf is a modest covering and the face is clearly seen.

It’s the awful burka I cannot bear to tolerate.

I have cousins in France and they are far more married up to the notion that "when in Rome, or in their case France adopt our way of life" than people are here imo. I understand France fiercely protects their secularism and that includes banning the wearing of religious symbols, but at times that comes across as rather draconian and doesn't bode for a cohesive society. Hijabs are pretty accepted here, most people don't give them a second thought, I certainly don't.

Having said that I don't like to see them on very little girls, I think there should be an element of choice about wearing them. That image was reinforced the other day when I saw the heart breaking picture of a hijab wearing little 9 year old Afghan girl who had been sold as a wife to an old man. Her face continues to haunt me.

confusedI've just googled this and a hijab is traditionally a garment that covers the upper body including the face.

Urmstongran Wed 03-Nov-21 18:24:45

?
Maybe that’s why France is objecting?

Urmstongran Wed 03-Nov-21 18:26:14

Me too Terribull about that photo & her father’s comments.

Yes secularism / laïcité is really important in public life and no religion or religious symbolism in state schools. Part of the reason for half days or no school on Wednesdays was so they could learn the catechism, though I have never seen much of it in practice.
When I was teaching in primary schools I once had a long conversation with a teacher who wanted me to teach the children the national anthem, but decided God Save the Queen might not be a good idea. (I didn't argue!)
The separation of church and state in schools dates from the end of the nineteenth century.

These days the niqab and burka are normally treated as being different from the hijab. The first covers the head and chest but allows the eyes to be seen, the second is all enveloping covering the woman entirely.
The hijab ( in its various forms of Shayla, Hijab Amira, Chador, Khimar and Hijab) is just a headscarf of various dimensions worn to cover the hair but expose the face, much the same as the Queen often wears.

I don't like seeing them. They immediately make the woman stand out as someone different and in a negative way.. I think in a non Muslim country they should try to fit in .

Thanks for the info Esspee.

Do you have the same reaction to Nuns?

Kali2 Wed 03-Nov-21 19:26:52

agreed that the burka should be banned, and any clothing that hides the eyes.

France is right on this one. We should follow suit.

JaneJudge Wed 03-Nov-21 20:17:48

I have women who work with me and my daughter who wear a hijab (headscarf) and they take it off in our home/ work if no men are there, presumably they trust us though? I wouldn't be bothered if they left it on or otherwise smile

greenlady102 Wed 03-Nov-21 20:27:00

but but.....bannng clothing won't change people's beliefs, it will just set more limits on what women are allowed to do....and how do you tell who is wearing a hijab and who is m=not moslem but is covering their hair? I prefer to wear a scarf rather than a face mask as a a covid face covering, should I not be allowed to do this? In winter, when its cold I do the same, either wear a hat and a face covering scarf, or wrap a scarf around my head and face. Should i not be allowed to do this either?
