And I’m not sure why I’m being singled out by quite a few people on this thread.
I’ve said far less than many others.
All I’ve said is I find her annoying - so what? I’ve not commented on her appearance, or said I think she’s talking rubbish.
Plenty of people before her have said exactly the same things, she’s not saying anything new which is why I’m surprised at all the media attention.
And my point about mobile phones is not ‘silly’ as some of you suggest.
Where is your phone / laptop made?
What are the costs to the environment in having these ( low shelf life ) items?
They’ve only been around about 15 years & I’m already on my 5th phone.
Aren’t Samsung a South Korean company? One of the biggest polluters in the world.
Who are the biggest buyers of smart phones? I’d say younger people, the very people hanging on Greta’s every word ( whilst taking pictures of her on their non essential, bad for the planet, made in the country they’re complaining about, smart phone.

More are just answering the OP in thinking that GT is irritating, which is a long way from hate, isn’t it?
This thread is just another example of some posters really not wanting others to have a different opinion to their own and steamrollering ( or trying to) their voices.

Meryl - that's exactly why action needs to be taken today. They are actually on notice so will almost certainly extract and destroy as much as possible

I don't particularly warm to her but admit that she is passionate about the planet.
The trouble is, I don't believe she would ever be satisfied. She wants immediate, drastic change, right this minute, and I think she lacks the maturity to understand that humans are not ready to commit to a totally green life.
I'm sure she'd be happy if everyone gave up their cars, all flights were banned, no-one ate beef etc, but she seems to have no idea of the consequences. Farmers going out of business, thousands of jobs lost, not enough green energy to meet needs etc.
It's all very well saying ' insulate your home, install heat pumps' etc, but many people can barely afford food, let alone expensive home improvements.

If humans can't commit to a totally green life, then we are playing russian roulette with the future of the human race on earth. That's why she's so passionate. I know it took the science a long time to be 100% sure that it was our activity that was causing global warming, but that is proven now. I would rely on that all the more because it took so long. It is certain. And it's also certain that, not only trees and animals that we love but also us, all our DGS & DGD will die out if this goes on. And if we stop net carbon loss into the atmosphere tomorrow, it wil be a long time before the earth stops warming, as there is a positive feedback mechanism involved here. This is why she's "too immature to understand the other factors- jobs, food". Would we rather be unemployed or extinct? I know which I'd rather for my descendants. starvation is extreme and I would hope ways can be found that this doesn't happen, but 100 years ago (when global warmoing had already gotten started) Stalin starved millions of peasants to radically adress the Soviet union's relative backwardness. They said the ends justified the means. We are at a point where the priority is to stop global warming. But many people still have other eggs in their basket. There is just this one egg, otherwise life on earth is going to be hellish or impossible within a few generations. That's what she's trying to get across & she is not immature, but those who say she doesn't understand other factors can't see the wood for the trees.

As others have said Greta T is on the autistic spectrum. The environment, climate change became her area of special interest as adolescence hit. Her parents are reported as having initially been worried but noticed her confidence grew, her anxiety lessened as her activism increased, so they continued to support activism.
Many of the comments here remind me of gransnet at its grumpy judgemental worst. Grannies ganging up on an 18 year old whose activities hurt no one and raise awareness of the dangers of climate change.
Sneering at people who was yoghurt pots says a lot about the sneerer.

However, if we accept there is an increase then it leaves us with two questions:

1. Are we causing it?
NASA produced a report showing CO2 levels and global temperature tracking each other over the last million years, or so. But this doesn't show CO2 levels cause global warming ... could well be the other way around. Might be another reason for global warming.

2. Is it catastrophic?
A warmer planet with a CO2 enriched atmosphere may have significant benefits, such as greater food production. Half the world's population still live in abject poverty which I (and they) think this is a more pressing issue. Global warming could well be beneficial to them!

Don't get me wrong I am all for cleaner energy, less pollution, less waste. I would say our generation have spearheaded this and would encourage the next to do better. We don't need some ranting teenager to tell us off!

Sadly as evinced here, Greta Thunberg is extremely unlikeable to so many people, which is not helping her worthwhile cause. It has nothing do do with her sex, Professor Richard Dawkins has the same problem. Her condition obviously is playing a part in this.
It may sound superficial, but anger tempered with likeability would be more successful.

I don't agree that GT is self promoting. Yes, she's about getting attention, but she needs to do that to promote her message.
Although I don't agree with her on all issues, she's still right to stand up for what she believes in. She's just a bit too full on for my liking.
