Is it just me or is she increasingly coming across as a brat having a permanent tantrum.? She has no positive ideas, merely demands to stop doing just about everything while the media hangs on her every intemperate word? Blah blah blah…..

Maybe I listen, read, watch too much gloom and doom. ?
OH keeps telling me to just think about puppies and Kittens ?

Good program on last night with Chris Packham on world population. For the first time since records began world population is dropping.

?Well, I would love a kitten.
Yes, I heard that about populations dropping, it’s something isn’t it?

I’m shocked and saddened at how willing people are to metaphorically ‘shoot the messenger’ with playground-style taunts and criticism of her looks and motives.

Please pause for a moment and recognise that continuing as we have been living is absolutely not sustainable. Please stop taking the advertisers’ bait and consuming the very life out of our planet. Please listen to people who are trying to help, whatever shape, colour, age or facial expression they have. And please try, honestly, to imagine what kind of future we are condemning our grandchildren to.

I don’t think Katek is wrong at all Meryl because there are the things that you point out ( all true) and the added point that populations and economies wouldn’t put up with the added stress of the kind of money it would take and the sacrifices needed. In other words, the answer isn’t simple.

Well, them doing what they said they would 24 years ago would be a start.

Cos its only going to get harder.

^I've got better things to do.^

So often, it ends that way...

BTW, I'm no lemming. Long way from being a lemming. grin

I’ve rarely got better things to do…
I just start another thread instead

MerylStreep Tue 09-Nov-21 15:00:26

Katek
I’m afraid your wrong ? There is an answer, but greed , money, power supersede the answer.

Oh I totally get it Casdon, please don’t make that mistake about me, you have no idea how much I get it. What I don’t get is the lemming like attitude of those who fall in behind an 18 year old activist.

Anyhoo, as they say up here, I’ve got things to do which are much more pleasurable than debating a problem with no answer. . Pointless exercise which will become boring and repetitive.

Enjoy your afternoon everyone?

Alegrias1 Tue 09-Nov-21 14:49:34

I think you're right MerylStreep. We need the mitigations, they need to be planning for that.

MerylStreep Tue 09-Nov-21 14:40:59

can a solution be found now
I believe not. I think the damage well and truly set in many years ago. We can do our best to halt it but we are not going to fix it. The human race will be fire fighting and dam building for many many years.
And that’s without mentioning migration. That’s going to be another huge problem.

vegansrock Tue 09-Nov-21 14:37:09

It’s funny how people on here know so much better, as “in the good old days we used old underpants for dishcloths and I still do” as if that solves the climate crisis along with a bit of recycling. In the good old days people smoked in restaurants and tube trains, they burnt coal till the air was thick with smog, they chucked their sewage and rubbish into the sea and whole species were decimated because of human greed. So not all was environmentally friendly in the past. GT does suggest solutions, I’m sure you’ve all read her book , but no one in power is listening, they all want to hang onto their so called luxuries which will die with them.

Alegrias1 Tue 09-Nov-21 14:25:40

I generally avoid the "Good post Topsy" kind of posts, but in this case I'll make an exception.

Good post Casdon ??

paddyann54 Tue 09-Nov-21 14:25:08

Did everyone watch The Trick on BBC earlier this year? About climategate ,If you missed it I'd recommend you watch it now .The government of this and many other countries have ignored the crisis and hidden facts from the public in no ones interest.Because of these hidden facts we are a whole decade behind where we should be ,Greta Thunberg is informing young people of facts that their governments would rather they didn't know .Its their future we need to save and even all thos who say they and their families weren't contributing to the climate crisis, have in many ways .Its time we all woke up and stopped shooting the messenger !

Casdon Tue 09-Nov-21 14:21:06

You genuinely don’t get it, do you Katek. Implying that Greta knew that by her sailing two displaced sailors would fly is just another excuse for closing your eyes to the reality of the situation. Greta is a catalyst. She doesn’t have to know all the details, she needs to shout, stir it up and refuse to be stamped on by ‘adults’ who purport to know more than she does, but actually do very little indeed. The good news is that it matters not at all what Gransnetters think of her, she and others like her are beginning to change the world regardless.

MerylStreep Tue 09-Nov-21 14:17:06

A couple of posters have mentioned the fact that Greta always looks angry. Perhaps if you’d seen some of her own documentaries about climate change instead of just watching news clips you might have seen her with her girl friends dancing and singing on a train. And looking very happy.

Alegrias1 Tue 09-Nov-21 14:16:27

Can a solution to this be found “now”?

I'd just like to comment on this, because it better be.

We need a solution now. I'm sorry if you find a shouty Swede unpleasant, but we've had 40 years. We've had 24 years since Kyoto, 12 years since Copenhagen and 6 years since Paris. And the action has been pathetic.

Don't blame Greta for wanting it now. Blame the powers that be for thinking they can dodge this, and for thinking that way since before she was born.

BlueBelle Tue 09-Nov-21 14:15:46

The insults are think and fast there’s some really nasty old ladies on here, really vicious
Why do you feel so strongly such vitriol against a young girl does she threaten you? what if it was your granddaughter would you want this awful nastiness said about them

If you don’t like her manner if you don’t like what she says don’t listen but the plain nastiness the sarcasm is just horrible and says more about you then it does about her

lemongrove Tue 09-Nov-21 14:07:01

Katek ??????
Excellent points.

Alegrias1 Tue 09-Nov-21 14:00:41

Well that's me told then.

You're asking her to be something she's not.

BTW, I'm married to one of the 1000's of much more experienced scientists with years of study under their belt.

She knows what she's talking about, honest. We'd best act on a solution now or we really are f***ed, Indian, Chinese or whatever. And my vegetarianism, like yours, won't be worth a hill of beans.

Katek Tue 09-Nov-21 13:50:22

Your ‘shouty little Swede” doesn’t actually know everything there is to know about the whole subject. At 18, how could she? It’s arrogant of her to assume she does. There are 1000’s of much more experienced scientists with years of study under their belt on both sides of the debate. What Ms Thunberg has is a single mindedness and an inability to look at the entire picture due in part to her Aspergers I would think. As mollygo has said, there are huge issues in India and China with their use of fossil fuels. What happens to the millions of people in these countries if they are prevented from using fossil fuels? Mass famine, disease and death is what happens. Can a solution to this be found “now”?
Actually, I was being ironic about the mince…..surprised you didn’t realise that. And it was my granny who wasted nothing in her entire life - I’m a vegetarian so I’m afraid I’m not a ‘whizz with mince’. (Good title for a cookery book by the way.
Let me tell you a little story which says to me that there’s someone behind Ms Thunberg, not specifically big business alegrias but she’s not organising everything by herself. Right, the story. You will all remember when Greta and her father sailed to America instead of flying. Well, the racing yacht used was not designed to carry passengers so two crew members had to stay ashore in order to make room for the Thunbergs. All very well until it came time for the yacht to return to its home port., so the two crewmen left behind in Sweden were flown out to the States to crew it back. So what benefit to the environment was Greta’s sea voyage? Air travel was still involved - just not by her, but in direct response to her actions. Nobody behind her??

Katek I'm sure you're a whizz with mince, but what fuel did you all use to cook it?

Not to mention the resources used in producing that meat in the first place.

Casdon Tue 09-Nov-21 13:09:48

This is the sort of waste of resources we could so easily avoid, which would make a big difference. Who cares if fridges had doors, but still the major supermarkets are railing against it.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-59141894
How easy would it be for the government to intervene and make it law?
