She's a terrified young woman who doesn't appear to have any belief in human ingenuity and ability to adapt. In a way I feel sorry for her and others like her. It can't be nice to feel so negative about the future.

She has Aspergers I believe, which means she only thinks in black and white, no grey areas.
She latched onto climate change when much younger and it became her obsession.If she hadn’t been ‘taken up’ by the media I think in time she may have gone onto another obsession, or become interested in a certain profession/job
As it is, this is what her life has become, this and only this.
As I see it, she may be being used and could become a rather dangerous figurehead to follow.She has no ideas ( which she admits) on practical steps and says that’s for world leaders.

From many countries and not a lot from the worst offenders,
But gradually they will be pushed into it by the rest of the world’s big players and not by angry teenagers.I really do understand why young people ( and older people too!) are worried and since it’s in nobody’s interest to plunge our planet into climate change chaos, can see that things will be accomplished to avoid catastrophe.

It would be interesting to know what the offspring of those of you who are critical of Greta Thunberg do, or have done about climate change, or indeed some of the other problems facing the world right now.

This thread is really shocking. Such utter intolerance and narrow minded attitudes to a young person who has had the guts to “stand up and be counted”.
To comment negatively on her physical appearance is inexcusable.
She is only 18 and like it or not has had a profound influence on young people. Some posters should feel ashamed of themselves. Sickening.

No I can’t.
She’s put herself up as a political activist so she’s in the same camp as any other politician.
Just because people haven’t voted for her to represent them doesn’t mean she’s off limits.
The fact that nobody in the entire world has ever voted for her means I can criticise her even more.

Just to say how much I agree with the original post.
Yesterday Greta Thunberg's speech was rude and insulting to the people who do support climate change and are trying to facilitate it. 'Blah blah blah' indeed. She has been idolised in a ridiculous way for a young girl by adults who should know better, and we are now seeing the result.
With regard to litter droppers the people responsible are the people who drop it; I have watched primary school children, very eco-conscious, cheerfully give up lunch times to collect litter from dirty corners of the playground, only to see those same children several years later unwrap chocolate bars and hold the wrappers up to let them blow away in the breeze.
I have no idea what makes them change and abandon their principles.

The many self-righteous claims along the lines of 'we were the green generation', lead me to believe that a lot of you are fooling yourselves.

You didn't walk to school because you were 'green' - you did it because you had no choice!

The coal fires that heated your houses weren't 'green', and nor was the central heating that almost all of you would have replaced it with once it became affordable.

How many of you have never had a car in the household as an adult? And if you didn't, how many of you can honestly say that that choice was made out of concern for the environment?

And do any of you remember how polluted our rivers used to be when we were young?

There are new threads here on Gransnet everyday that show that the environment is pretty low down in many of your minds, threads where the "if you want it and can afford it, go for it" attitude trumps environmental concerns every time.

I said I find her irritating. That's not to say I don't admire her. I do. I would never, ever criticise anyone's appearance.

I disagree FannyCornforth.

Although I think that Greta is courageous and I like to think that younger people will listen to her and act in positive ways, I do hope she will not burn out at some point.

Young people shouting that others need to do something is all very well but they are the generation that need to bring about change and to help others to change too.

"I'm just a kid, you figure it out" as in the advert is not a slogan that encourages young people to work towards better solutions. It put the onus on others while and many young people take for granted their comfortable lives.

I think Greta could have addressed the conference as invited.

Whether you like Greta or not her cause is something we should all be invested in.

I don't think she is a popular young women , probably because she looks angry all the time, but she has definitely got everyone talking about climate change and everyone knows her name.
On the other hand there were some very well spoken young people being interviewed on the news at lunch time (Sky) who put their point across very eloquently.
