I'm trying to find a word for someone who says contentious things but then feigns ignorance so they don't get blamed for it.

Imagine if we tried to annexe Corsica or Sicily!

If Italy signed a Treaty that would separate Sicily from Italy, or if France signed a Treaty that would separate Corsica from France...

a) the would be VERY VERY stupid (which is why they would never do that ...)

and

b) they would then have to stick to it and bear the consequences.

The nearest I can think of is "faux-naïf", but I can't really think of a good old Anglo-Saxon equivalent.

But pretending to be innocent to make people believe you're something you're not, that would be OK would it?

What case? That people PM each other? They've been doing that all the time since I've been on Gnet.

And no I don't think Article 16 will be triggered unfortunately, a lot of bluster but they never follow through, just empty threats from both sides.

I rarely report. I like all posters to see how nasty people can really be on GN. Not the ones who stand up for themselves. The ones who post unpleasant little messages assuming things about people they don't know and who assume everybody's minds work they way theirs do.
