He says in the Telegraph just now:
“ ...as the official number of arrivals for 2021 heads towards 25,000 (we still don’t have the Home Office figures for Tuesday 16 November) it does seem as though something is beginning to change. Reports are circulating that the Prime Minister has become fretful. As well he should. On his watch, the mantra of “taking back control” of our borders has descended into farce.
The biggest problem Boris Johnson faces is not the sheer impracticality and cost to the public purse of housing, clothing, feeding and giving free healthcare and education to huge numbers of people who have chosen to leave the safety of France to come to this country. Neither is it the daily expense of conducting the Channel operations. Instead, it is the threat to Britain’s national security and the safety of its citizens. Johnson is ultimately responsible for guarding his people. This is the sacred duty of any prime minister. It should override all others. Yet the present occupant of 10 Downing Street seems to have abandoned his post.”

Change our laws? Or at least alter the terms and conditions we currently offer.
Changing Laws will not make any difference!
Lemon, they were coming in 'droves' did you say? Has Brexit helped, or made it 'worse'.
Soon you will be repeating that Brexit had nothing to do with immigration, and you will expect us to believe you!
Like Raab, some of you need to have a better grasp of the realities of Geography.

Certainly not!
That's the beauty of that thread, unspoilt by people pictures!
I’m a big fan of legal immigration. Come here, work and pay your taxes.
That’s great. You are very welcome.
But arrive over here in a rubber dinghy with no papers after paying a people trafficker? Nope.
Some great points there Urmstongran. Completely agree with you. ???
I have said before that one possible solution to the immigration crisis is to make it clear that those turning up on our shores illegally will automatically have their asylum application rejected
The idea is to break the business model of the people smugglers, which of course is a very lucrative enterprise for them.
Once the message gets through that it’s hopeless trying, the numbers will drop.
It’s always worth repeating that these migrants have already travelled through several perfectly safe European countries before reaching here, so their claims of escaping war and persecution somehow don’t ring true.
Apologies if I got the date of the failed asylum claim wrong.
There is one though who is still here from 2008.

As workers from the EU were doing.
Indeed. But they voted to get rid of them!

I grew out of picture books about 60 years ago. I can cope with unillustrated discussion. Especially when the picture is offensive (and probably meant to be)
Nigel and Boris are like Marmite you love it or hate it. Nigel certainly gets people talking. I hope he teams up with Richard Tice and The Reform Party.
Best ignore my news threads then MaizieD as I like this format. I’m sticking with it as I find a photograph enhances the topic under discussion. We shall just have to agree to disagree. Personal choice.
?
Well Maisie, as said on another thread- there is a picture all over social media- just as predicted. The one with Merkel and Macron splitting sides with laughter, and the caption '... and then he talked about Peppa Pig... to the CBI'
It is now widely predicted that it was all planned- to divert attention to the destruction of the NHS being voted for by Tories in front of our very eyes.
The so called asylum seekers get £39.64 x 7 = £277.41 per week (this is more than Oaps basic state pension which we have paid tax and insurance contributions for years) each and for each family member and somewhere to live even if their asylum application is refused, they still get the money and somewhere to live. So that is something that needs to be changed. Also they get free healthcare and dental treatment when people (me included because I have recently moved can't find an NHS dentist) the list is endless. So Boris and Pritti Patel instead of all the soundbites about what you are going to do about this crisis and the dinghies full of fit young men, do something to stop them otherwise you have lost my vote.
MaizieD I have no idea why you would think a picture of Nigel Farage is offensive just because you don’t like him.
I have never liked Jeremy Corbyn but I am not silly enough to complain if anyone should happen to post a picture of him!

How do you work that out?
They get £39.63 a WEEK.
What else do they get in this so-called endless list?
Flat screen TVs and top of the range mobile phones, I believe, growstuff

You mean break international law?
I thought the UK was trying to be seen as a respected country globally.

Anybody is entitled to travel to the UK any way they want. It is not illegal.
Maudi you got that spectacularly wrong Asylum seekers get just over £5 a DAY which makes it around £37 a WEEK and a roof over their heads .My GD's other GF works with Asylum seekers and I know this is FACT

But sadly people have seen the original mistaken figures……
Sorry I can't remember who it was but sure it was a government minister on Radio 4 the other day, who admitted that asylum-seekers receive higher welfare payments in France compared to the UK. And no doubt in other EU countries.
All these young fit men, who some people seem to so despise, are coming with the intention to work. If we had a functioning system they could be cleared to stay, or otherwise, and let those accepted find work, instead of languishing for years and years on end, at public expense.
Suffice to say, numbers crossing the Channel were much reduced when we were in the EU!
There's lots of misinformation around immigrants and asylum seekers. I watched a bit of Newsnight last night and learnt that the annual number of asylum seekers now is about half what it used to be. But the pandemic has closed off some of the "traditional" routes for arriving so people are using the routes that still have available, one of which is crossing the channel in small boats.
Sorry I don't know how to just post a bit of this, but the relevant bit starts at about 18 minutes in. I especially like the bit where Emily Maitliss tells that Tory MP that they are running out of people to blame
