No. I think the RF could give back illgotten gains.

Not a fan of the Orange Order either.

theworriedwell Thu 02-Dec-21 11:46:45

I didn't say all protestants in Northern Ireland revered him. The extremist members of the Orange Order do. As a Catholic I was exposed to all their extreme views as a child.

My husband and my children are descended from slaves, we go to places built on slavery, hospitals, museums etc. Do you think they should all be demolished?

His Catholic enemies said he was homosexual, it is by no means certain. To my Orange family in Northern Ireland he will forever be King Billy, revered by the protestants.^

I was born a protestant in NI. I don't revere him. Nor do any of my friends.
It's not the queen's fault that Kensington palace was funded from slavery but the RF still live in it. Would you live in a house built on slavery?

Hinckley Point was actually a contract between China,David Cameron and the major share holder EDF, which is,for claritys sake French.

Alegrias1 Tue 30-Nov-21 14:47:25

I'm hoping for UDI.

Jabberwok Tue 30-Nov-21 14:44:18

Don't dictate to me what I should or shouldn't understand. Matters of trade which this power station comes under are totally different to matters of constitution as well you know. I imagine that you in Scotland expect the decision of independence to be courtesy of a referendum and not the whim of government. Hopefully it will happen asap and many of us in England will, with a sigh of relief be free from Scotland's everlasting whinging.

paddyann54 Tue 30-Nov-21 14:17:38

Jabberwok is this the same Chian the tories were giving contracts to,to build nuclear power station on the south coast?
Of course thats different when its ENGLISH MP's making those decisions ,wht you and they need to understand is the thay other countries are perfectly capable of making decisions for themselves

Jabberwok Tue 30-Nov-21 13:49:33

Sorry, devisive!

Grany

Lalu Hanuman, of the 13th June 1980 Movement, said: “A lot of people don’t realise the linkages between the Royal Family and slavery. Their hands are mired in it. And a substantial amount of their wealth came from it.”

“Kensington Palace was directly built off of the slave trade by King William III. Before that Elizabeth I granted a royal charter to Sir John Hawkins and provided him with ships for the slave trade. She also gave him his own coat of arms, which depicted a chained African person.”

The slave trade resulted in 12million African people being snatched from their countries. Five million were taken to the Caribbean, including 600,000 to Barbados. And their deaths ran into the millions.

After the vile trade was abolished in 1833, ex-slave owners, including relatives of the royals, were compensated. But the slaves got nothing.

I didn't know that. Disgusting.

Yes, excellent speech by Prince Charles.

Jabberwok Tue 30-Nov-21 13:47:39

I don't think we would have been too pleased at being told that changes in our constitution was up to the government of the day?! In a democracy surely the will of the people is paramount in extremely important matters? Yes referendums are decisive inevitably so, but government decisions of this magnitude without the consent of the public is a dictatorship. The role of China in this is is certainly worrying. They don't give substantial sums of money for nothing in return.

Smileless2012 Tue 30-Nov-21 13:24:31

A great and dignified speech from Prince Charles.

vegansrock Tue 30-Nov-21 13:02:57

People vote a government in to make decisions on their behalf. Referendums are inherently divisive. The Queen being monarch of far flung countries is an anachronism and will doubtless wither away.

Smileless2012 Tue 30-Nov-21 12:56:58

hmm China's influence already perhaps Urmstongran.

Urmstongran Tue 30-Nov-21 12:52:43

I read that this decision was taken for the people of Barbados by their government. No consultation. No referendum.

Keeper1 Tue 30-Nov-21 12:45:14

Sorry posted to soon I was writing in regard to St Lucia but I see Barbados is staying in the Commonwealth. Rumours are circulating that China is behind the recent moves they have supplied a lot of money on low interest rates let’s hope Barbados doesn’t regret it.

Jabberwok Tue 30-Nov-21 12:44:36

I absolutely agree tww, I wonder if others on here do too?

Keeper1 Tue 30-Nov-21 12:42:37

I should have said independence

theworriedwell Tue 30-Nov-21 11:12:06

Doesn't worry me if they are a republic or not but I do think the people of Barbados should have had the final say on it. I don't know if it was part of a manifesto at their last elections which would be something but a referendum is the way to go I think.

Look at Brexit, even after a referendum it has divided the country, imagine how people would feel if David Cameron had just announced it was happening, or Theresa May or Boris Johnson.

Jabberwok Tue 30-Nov-21 11:07:42

If the people of Barbados want a republic then that's absolutely fine and their choice, but what is disturbing is that the people of Barbados were not offered a choice on this subject in the form of a referendum, just a majority in Parliament decided this matter. Ummm! The input of China is equally concerning as China won't be giving something for nothing. We shall see.

Alegrias1 Tue 30-Nov-21 08:10:06

What a happy report. smile

Still a Commonwealth member, I note.

Alegrias1 Mon 29-Nov-21 19:04:24

They haven't.

Keeper1 Mon 29-Nov-21 18:54:24

Yes when in St Lucia many people I spoke to said that they should not have left the Commonwealth.

Witzend Mon 29-Nov-21 17:26:50

While on holiday in Barbados some years ago I do remember a fellow British tourist saying to a local lady, ‘I see that you have our Queen on your stamps.’

Local lady said very emphatically, ‘Our Queen!’

Smileless2012 Mon 29-Nov-21 17:22:17

Let's hope that if there has been a large amount of financial input from China, that's the only input they'll have.
