Well done the Queen.

Most years, the Queen invites her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to join her at Buckingham Palace for a festive party.

But a Buckingham Palace source confirmed she had called off the royal gathering, because it could put too many people’s Christmas arrangements at risk.

annodomini the royals spend Christmas at Sandringham, not Balmoral.

Lucca I’d love to know what the Queen thinks, or has thought of many of our Prime Ministers but she’s far too professional to ever let it be known. It’s rumoured that she disliked Margaret Thatcher, but I’ve never heard anything about any of the others. I’d give more than a penny for her thoughts on BJ but I guess we’ll never know. I’d like even more to know what she thought of Donald Trump, and a number of other foreign dignitaries.

HM Queen always spends Christmas at Sandringham with her close family. She returns to London after 6 February, which is the anniversary of her father’s death. The do at Buckingham Palace is for the ‘lesser’ Royals - cousins and so on. The Royals who are taken to Royal Weddings in coaches! Balmoral is the summer residence. I think it would be too cold in the winter.

If she keeps a diary, we won’t be able to read it until 100 years after her death!

She does go to Balmoral for Christmas, and will apparently be helicoptered up there later next week.

No, she doesn’t. It’s Sandringham.

Riggie Fri 17-Dec-21 12:45:31

But what has she cancelled? My understanding was that she has cancelled the larger pre Christmas party, not that she has cancelled the family being there actually at Christmas??

Lucca Fri 17-Dec-21 12:47:43

Well even I who am not totally au fait with RF various locations for holidays have seen several times on here that Xmas is sandringham …..does nobody read threads ???

I thought the RF all went to Balmoral for Christmas together.

I'm a bit puzzled by that, too, because that's what I thought...

They go to Sandringham for Christmas. Balmoral is their summer holiday home.

NotTooOld Fri 17-Dec-21 13:15:51

This is an hilarious thread! According to google the Queen spends Christmas and New Year at Sandringham, so there! I believe it is the pre-Christmas lunch which has been cancelled, so not sure where that takes place as I wasn't invited (or even uninvited) this year. grin

Alegrias1 Fri 17-Dec-21 13:17:54

I love the idea of Balmoral as a summer holiday home. Most people's summer holiday home is a caravan...grin

I recently read that Harold Wilson often returned from his weekly audience with Queen a bit sozzled from the whiskies they’re enjoyed together. As far as we know she doesn’t usually treat these meetings as social events so she must have got on well with HW.

I would love a summer holiday in a caravan

After Christmas dinner on Boxing Day hunting.

Like many 'Royals' before them, hunting has always been a favourite pastime - whether they are shooting stags, grouses or pheasants

'Royal Family' urged to shield 'Prince' George from Boxing Day family tradition this year

'The Royals' been widely criticised for hunting each year on Boxing Day and animals rights groups now claim the activity can cause young children to develop anti-social behaviour later in life

PETA director Mimi Bekhechi said few people in 2020 viewed shooting as "anything other than a violent perversion".

She continued: "For a child to be compelled to witness such casual killing - and by a parent he looks up to, no less - is potentially as harmful to his or her psyche as it is to the bird's very life.

merlotgran Fri 17-Dec-21 13:49:08

Hunting has been banned. Shooting is a completely different sport.

When we visited Sandringham we were talking to staff member and the Queen goes to Sandringham every Christmas without fail and doesn’t leave until day after her late fathers birthday in February we got that info from the horses mouth, so to speak. Balmoral has always been her August 6 week break

Harold Wilson was her favourite Prime Minister - allegedly.

The Queen has set a good example (quite different from the Oaf and his Oafmen/women). Well done and very sensible. Thank God we have experts like Chris Whitty. The attacks on him by Tory MPs are disgraceful.

Grantanow Fri 17-Dec-21 14:09:45

Yes. I heard that too about HW. Of course, he was a very scholarly man, Fellow of Balliol and a cigar smoker to boot!

Daisend1 Fri 17-Dec-21 14:42:13

Don't blame her as there would have been one empty chair no other could have filled..

Well, in this case the horse’s mouth was wrong!

George V1, father of the Queen, was actually born in December. He died on February 6th 1952. The Queen stays on at Sandringham until after that date, to mark his death and her own accession as a result.

MollyG Fri 17-Dec-21 15:51:39

I think it’s quite convenient for her PR as well, she hasn’t been seen for months in public I’m guessing she is very ill sadly.

ForeverAutumn Fri 17-Dec-21 16:03:59

The Royal Family come to Sandringham for Christmas (we live nearby)

Lucca Fri 17-Dec-21 16:09:06

YES WE KNOW

Lexisgranny Fri 17-Dec-21 16:15:51

I remember the cold day in February when King George died, during break time at school we were all wondering why the flag on the local church was first raised then lowered to half mast. We were quickly ushered inside.

George XV was born at York Cottage in Sandringham on 14th of December 1895. He died in Sandringham on 6th February 1952. The Queen stays at Sandringham until after the anniversary of his death and I seem to remember that she does not allow Christmas decorations to be taken down until that time.

Lucca - can you remind me - where do the RF spend Xmas? wink

Aveline Fri 17-Dec-21 16:24:13

George XV- a bit inflationary? He was George VI!
