Sighs of relief from the hospitality sector I imagine. We have tickets with friends for NYE. Nice to know it’s ‘on’. Obviously see how we feel nearer the time but so far so good as far as we’re all concerned.

And this, despite Jenny Harries trying to bounce us all into lockdown last week by feeding false data to Javid.

Just had to backtrack to this comment. Could you please back this up with evidence please. You can't really make this sort of statement without proven links to that effect. Thanks.

By taking every care and a bit of good luck over the last 22 months none of my fully vaccinated family had been diagnosed until gd caught it 10 days ago, followed by dd and dh both positive in the last 2 days. I await my fate.
The last thing I would do is go out into a crowd on nye. Madness.

Until about a month ago I knew few people who had had Covid, now I'm hearing reports daily of people who have just had it or have it now. It's mostly people under 50 who have been vaccinated and children who are succumbing now.

It is fortunate we can now do lateral flows I don’t know many who have had it recently but they report having suffered worse colds and would not have realised unless they has tested
My grandson was ill for 1 day although in contact with other family members they did not get it including myself and his brother

I am delighted Boris has held his nerve, more restrictions would devastate the country.

I really believe that by using our common sense we can more or less continue as normal and avoid more lockdowns.

We are seeing friends for dinner tomorrow evening so we have agreed to do LFT’s in the morning.

This is what most people are doing now, it has resulted in a crazy amount of positive tests country wide and caused many to change their Christmas plans but is far better than lockdown.

Barmeyoldbat Tue 28-Dec-21 16:05:40

Sago if you really have to go dinner at friends I suggest you do a laterakl flow test just before you. Haven’t you read the rest of the posts

I’ve been out to lunch with friends Kali2. Just home.

Thanks. I have read it twice, and can't see that the data was 'false'.

''However, government sources have suggested that is now unlikely, based on the latest data and a wall of opposition from Conservative backbenchers and ministers. ''

I’m pleased that we haven’t been bounced into a full lockdown but I think there are measures that could have helped that have been ignored. Social distancing should be obligatory, table service only in pubs and restaurants, obviously mask wearing to continue in all indoor venues, vaccine passports or negative test to get into every venue from small coffee shops to theatres. Sports venues closed, games played in private. That’s what I would have done if I was PM.

and a wall of opposition from Conservative backbenchers and ministers. ''

I can't help thinking that that is the most pertinent point in the article. Because, of course, a merchant banker and a coterie of extreme free market right wingers have far more covid expertise than a scientist

(though, TBH, I always found Jennie Harris a bit suspect)

This government’s policy now seems to be let the virus run rampant through the population to avoid paying furlough or compensation. Ambulances still stacking up for hours outside our local huge hospital due to staff sickness.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 28-Dec-21 18:07:21

It is very easy to be in favour of lockdown if retired, or in an occupation where it is possible to work from home.

There are millions of people/occupations where it’s not possible to do work from home, so it’s not a level playing field for working age folks.

Mask wearing, vaccinations (not mandatory but encouraged) and personal responsibility are the way forward in my opinion.

Please read the post properly before reaching for the keyboard!

We are doing LFT’s in the morning.

What about the children GG13 - who will very likely have so many staff away schools will probably close, and with the Government not prepared to install decent air changing systems. Robbing Peter to pay Paul ...And of course the NHS on its knees even more due to so many staff now off work too.

Anniebach Tue 28-Dec-21 18:25:43

The number in hospital in England is now the highest since last March

Urmstongran Tue 28-Dec-21 18:32:34

Yet 50% less than this time last year! Good news surely?

Kali2 Tue 28-Dec-21 18:35:10

what about staffing levels umg

Kali2 Tue 28-Dec-21 18:40:08

Maizie- why ''(though, TBH, I always found Jennie Harris a bit suspect)''? Why anymore than any of the others? VanTamm with his silly 'sayings' always sounds so phoney to me.

It was Jennie Harries that blamed NHS staff for the shortage of PPE as she said they were ‘misusing them’. She had to keep a low profile for quite a while after that. She seems to speak differently now she’s in a new role, although I do lose track of what roles people are in these days.

Regarding air filtration systems, the results of trials conducted by Bradford, York and one other University are due in any time now. If it’s proven they are successful then they can be rolled out in 2022.

…she does have ‘something of the night’ about her, too….

Whitewavemark2 Tue 28-Dec-21 18:51:04

The number of hospital patients in England with Covid has risen by over 1000 in the last 24 hours.

We now have over 9500 Covid inpatients - the highest number since 3 March.

Remember this decision by Johnson is as a result of pressure by about 100 right wing MPs.
