To cross the boarder or not?

What will happen to the number of Covid cases in the Northern counties of England, if Scots do not respond to a request from M/S Sturgeon not to cross to England to celebrate Hogmanay?

Oldbat1 Wed 29-Dec-21 20:08:26

It is over 100miles from Edinburgh area to Newcastle where there may be celebrations. I realistically can’t see many Scots bothering. It is also a long drive from Glasgow to Carlisle. Ok folk who live on the border may travel to small towns like Berwick for instance but otherwise there are very few places “celebrating” on a large enough scale to entice folk. I am a Scot who lives in Northumberland and celebrations are very small in normal years.

“English hospitality venues predict an influx of party-going invaders, bravely crossing Hadrian’s Wall and Offa’s Dyke to hit nearby watering holes.

For one night only, the likes of Shrewsbury, Hereford and Berwick-Upon-Tweed could become the Ibizas or Ayia Napas of the borders”

It was in the Telegraph and made me smile. ?

I can't see many Scots bothering either, but quite frankly, if anyone is that desperate just to get p*ssed for New Year, they can stay across the border!

Casdon Wed 29-Dec-21 20:18:39

It’s fantasy though Urmstongran. I can’t imagine anywhere much less like Ayia Napa than Hereford or Shrewsbury, and the natives of the Wales border towns aren’t known for loose living (sadly). It’s 57 miles from Cardiff, the den of Welsh iniquity to Hereford, the centre of UK cider drinking - it’s just not going to happen.

Going by what Alegrias says about relative CoVid levels in the Scottish and English sides of the border, the result of a lot of Scots crossing into the northern counties to celebrate will be that they raise the level when they go home again. The level in the Northern counties would not change.

Are you planning to start any more threads about your fear of the Scots, Yammy, to fill in the dead news zone between Christmas and New Year? Don't forget Burns' birthday on 25th January - that has possibilities. He wrote some quotable stuff, like this -
"Where sits our sulky, sullen dame, Gathering her brows like gathering storm, Nursing her wrath to keep it warm."
and -
"O, would some Power the giftie gie us
To see oursels as others see us!
It would frae monie a blunder free us,
An' foolish notion."
and this -
"While Europe's eye is fix'd on mighty things,
The fate of Empires and the fall of Kings;
While quacks of State must each produce his plan,
And even children lisp the Rights of Man;
Amid this mighty fuss just let me mention,
The Rights of Woman merit some attention.

It us quite difficult with ops previous posting history though.

Out of order to post about another thread surely?

Josieann Wed 29-Dec-21 20:29:02

I have no idea what all the other thread references are?
I thought I'd read the OP again to try to fathom it out. I think I've got it! From the title the Scots are going to come and board in England. Now that is more worrying.

MayBeMaw Wed 29-Dec-21 20:44:24

I think they should repel all boarders.

I have no fear or hatred of the Scots, let them cross the boarder spend their money and boost our economy.
What I'm saying is what others are either saying or thinking will they listen to the advice given by Nicola Sturgeon or just do as they please and endanger innocent people when numbers on both sides of the boarder rise. I'm asking a question will they listen to reason.
If we're into quotes how about Sir Walter Scots about Durham Cathedral," Half church of God half castle against the Scots. Inscribed on Prebends bridge Durham.Maybe both sides have always feared each other.

Calistemon Wed 29-Dec-21 21:09:35

I don’t think there will be many people living in say Cardiff or Glasgow travelling miles and crossing the borders, it will be people who live on the border area anyway, most of whom cross the border regularly anyway one way or the other to work shop etc.

I just posted something similar on another thread, Casdon.

More people cross these artificial borders daily each way to shop in the sales, go to work, visit families than will be going out on NYE.

Oh dear, my friend will be trapped in her house again because it's in England but half of her garden is in Wales!!

Ross-on-Wye, here we come - watch out for the marauding Welsh!

janeainsworth Wed 29-Dec-21 21:16:55

Here’s a photo I took recently near Great Wanney Crags in Northumberland. It’s about 20 miles from the England/Scotland border.

I’m sure that if hordes of Scots invade on New Year’s Eve, firstly they will have to be very hardy souls and fully equipped with wild camping gear, and secondly they won’t make a scrap of difference to Northumberland’s already high Covid rates.

Alegrias1 Wed 29-Dec-21 21:20:11

"They, they, they."

There's only one side here frightened.

What about all the English folk who will certainly be going to parties and nightclubs and so on? Why not complain about them endangering innocent people, and not worry about a tiny proportion of Scots or Welsh people who might join them?

Didn't somebody mention paranoia? I'm not the paranoid, frightened one here.

rosie1959 Wed 29-Dec-21 21:24:54

I suspect there will be plenty of Hogmanay celebrations north of the boarder with or without Nicola Sturgeons blessing

lemongrove Wed 29-Dec-21 21:29:47

Maw your posts always cheer me up?

Alegrias1 Wed 29-Dec-21 21:30:22

Who is this boarder? Goodness, they're going to be busy...

lemongrove Wed 29-Dec-21 21:30:49

South of the border ( down Mexico way) ?

Well, I was worried they'd all be driving home -pissed as newts slightly merry.

Boarding somewhere might be a good idea.

lemongrove Wed 29-Dec-21 21:33:02

Hope there will be no invaders ( white walkers)getting past the wall....where are the Watch when you need them?

lemongrove Wed 29-Dec-21 21:34:32

rosie yes, I think you’re right, there will be, but hopefully out in the fresh air mainly.

Woodmouse Wed 29-Dec-21 21:38:56

For Pete's sake! I live on the boarder with Scotland and went shopping there yesterday. What difference will crossing from one to the other really make? Talk about creating resentment and division.

Galaxy Wed 29-Dec-21 21:43:35

Crikey are we all from the North, who knew? I'm in county Durham now but previously was in Northumberland. I am not sure that the Scots will cope with our no coat, (or any other clothes to speak of) clubbing regime but they are welcome to try it.

Elegran Wed 29-Dec-21 21:48:03

It is OK, Yammy If no-one in the northern counties is out in the pubs or on the streets celebrating the New Year, but they are all indoors with a mug of cocoa having an early night like the sober sensible citizens we know they all are, there will be no-one for the hordes of marauding Scots to share their CoVid-tainted whisky bottles with, so you will be quite safe.

If they take in boarders, they will just have to confiscate all alcohol at the door.
