Although I don't approve of the whole honours thing, I am pleased to see he has been recognised.

Can't think (well, I can, but...) of anyone more deserving. Great man. Great service to our country.

Delighted to see Chris Whitby honoured and JVT.

And when Daniel Craig gets the award that James Bond had, you have to wonder - is this really happening...?

Is it for his charity work rather than acting?

That’s what I ‘ve been told. Some people just quietly go about helping others without blowing their own trumpet.

Well that's as may be but his award was for services to film and theatre.

Professor Sir Jonathan Van Tamm

Thank you Aveline

I have just seen on the news, the excitement and pride of that little boy aged 11. I personally couldn't be more pleased for him. Why can't somebody of that age receive an award? I am a bit on the fence with the award system. However, people don't have to accept an award, so for me that, and the joy it's given that little boy, makes it ok, I think!

I don’t agree with the honours system at all, but if anyone deserves it, Chris Whitty is the person.
(I hope all those who lost a son/daughter in Iraq or Afghanistan are happy about Tony Blair getting an honour!)

We were fortunate our son came home from Mr Blair’s illegal wars, many didn’t, some who came home have never been the same…

nanaK54 Sat 01-Jan-22 12:22:11

How will they be addressed? Is it Sir Professor Van Tam or do they drop the 'Professor'?

Rosina Sat 01-Jan-22 12:17:44

I agree Fleur20; my thoughts about Tony Blair are unprintable.

maddyone Sat 01-Jan-22 12:11:03

Lincslass that exactly what I meant. I was being facetious in saying I hope the relatives of our service personnel are happy. I’m not surprised to hear you’re not, I haven’t even got any service personnel in my family, but I feel angry on behalf of those who do. He took us into two wars, at least one was illegal if not both, with all the attendant death and destruction, and then left office to make himself millions, and now is rewarded for his disgusting actions. I don’t approve of the honours system anyway, because I believe the great and good use it to reward their cronies, but this honour to Blair is disgraceful.

Fleur20 Sat 01-Jan-22 12:02:38

My thoughts on Blairs award would melt my phone...?

Sarnia Sat 01-Jan-22 12:01:51

I would rather see Chris Whitty and Jonathan Van-Tam honoured than the usual 'celebrities'. Tony Blair, definitely not. Perhaps the sword will slip when he gets knighted.

Fleur20 Sat 01-Jan-22 12:01:45

Disappointed that Emma Raducanu was given an award... she is at the beginning of what hopefully will be a long and very successful career. These awards should be based on longterm achievements.
And I was yelling her on all the way so it is not personal!!

EllanVannin Sat 01-Jan-22 11:56:00

Lady Blair will be pleased ! ( rolls eyes )

However it pleases me when medics are recognised, pity it wasn't a few more ! If anyone deserves recognition it's them.

Anyone else, I'm not particularly concerned about.

Alegrias1 Sat 01-Jan-22 11:44:19

Daniel Craig's award is for services to film and theatre. The fact that he's been given the same award as real life spies and diplomats just shows what a ridiculous system this is.

As for 11 year olds getting BEMs....words fail me.

Chewbacca Sat 01-Jan-22 11:42:47

I see Tony Blair also knighted, not sure about that award.

I don't agree with the system of handing out gongs, especially to actors who are just doing what they're paid to do anyway, but handing one out to Bliar for what he's done, is shocking compared to what young Tobias Weller did to earn his.

Yes Daniel Craig! Ridiculous. I suppose it all depends on being put forward for some sort of recognition. Not necessarily what you know...

I assume that he got his award for deeds he has done behind the scenes not all famous folk shout their charitable deeds from the rooftop’s.

I thought it was nice that the young lad who has slept in a tent for over 640 days and raised £600,00+ for his local hospice was recognised along with the 11 yr old boy with cerebral palsy and autism who raised money for charity.

I shouldn’t think they are. My DSIL served three times, luckily came out unscathed physically, mentally after what he witnessed is a different matter. Blair does not deserve this accolade, neither does his wife.

Alegrias1 Sat 01-Jan-22 11:37:59

I don't want to turn this into a debate about the honours, honestly, and I do think that Whitty has done a great job. So I'll say this and disappear off.

Whitty is no "unsung hero". We all know what a great service he has done to this country, along with Van Tam and the others. I just don't understand the driving force behind giving somebody an entirely honorific title that has no benefits whatsoever. I know it must mean something to them, members of my family have received honours in the past and were so happy about it. (not knighthoods, of course!)

It just strikes me as keeping the masses happy. Whitty got basically the same award as Joanna Lumley and Craig got one that traditionally goes to spies and diplomats. Fully old world.

Me neither, lemsip. For making himself very rich?

Well done to those who are steering us through this crisis. I hope those working to exhaustion point in the NHS get the recognition they deserve to but perhaps a higher pay rise might be a better acknowledgement.

Casdon Sat 01-Jan-22 11:31:15

Recognition of effort which has supported the country in very trying times, for the usually unsung heroes in this case Alegrias1. It must mean something to them, as there’s no obligation to accept.

No doubt at all that Whitty and co have done a sterling job these last 2 years. But what exactly is the point of a knighthood, can someone explain?

The Scottish CMO got a knighthood as well. I'm quite disappointed in him for accepting it. But not as disappointed as I am with Vanessa Redgrave sad
