So much for a world beating Animal Welfare Bill

The government have shelved a proposed ban on foie gras and imported fur..

Rees Mogg argued that it prevents personal choice.

Not sure what choice the animals have.

Like everything else the promises are nothing but hot air.

X posts Calli!

This government and its supporters should be ashamed of just ignoring this.

Bearskins not worn during Tony Blair’s tenure then?

Smileless2012 Sat 19-Feb-22 11:05:18

Don't eat it and don't wear it. Unfortunately when people do, there'll always be a market.

Callistemon21 Sat 19-Feb-22 11:04:10

vegansrock not just this government, dreadful though they might be - it has been every government even when we were EU members.

Urmstongran Sat 19-Feb-22 11:03:48

When we had a voice in the EU, with MEPs acting as part of the decision making process in Europe, then we could campaign via our own MEP. Not now - that avenue has been closed for us

And much good it did anyway (not).

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 19-Feb-22 11:03:40

Another horrendous practice is the plucking of down from live ducks and geese, over and over again, their breasts left red raw. I won't buy anything filled with down or feathers unless they are ethically sourced. Something else that could be banned.

We had a thread a while ago mentioning that some genuine fur is labelled as being fake. I won't touch fake fur either.

I try to do my bit and support campaigning charities but so long as there is a demand for the products of these cruel practices they will carry on. Banning their importation into the UK would be a step towards eliminating demand.

vegansrock Sat 19-Feb-22 11:01:40

Ridiculous to say no one has been campaigning for improved animal welfare - we have- except no one takes any notice. Yes we should have campaigned for improved welfare when we were EU members but didn’t ,we could have raised our standards and regulations, but didn’t , animal welfare in this country is woeful and just because it may be worse elsewhere is NO excuse. NO prosecutions for animal cruelty on farms and in slaughterhouses even when there is blatant video evidence. It happens every day. IN THE U.K. Plus the MoD would not consider faux fur bearskins even when they are indistinguishable from real bear fur and they serve no military purpose - they are just for show, so we are contributing to killing if bears in Canada for cosmetic reasons Appalling. This government and its supporters should be ashamed of just ignoring this.

Callistemon21 Sat 19-Feb-22 11:00:42

It's astonishing!

And the way agricultural workers are treated in Spain is disgraceful too.

All those years as an EU member and we never managed to improve their standards to those of the UK!

Grantanow Sat 19-Feb-22 10:58:28

I was a bit surprised to see how many women in Prague wore fur coats in the winter.

Ceremonial Bearskins worn by foot regiments and as seen worn by guards outside the palace are real from culled bears. I didn’t know that.

I don't know why you say people haven't been protesting against fois gras or mink farms in Denmark Callistemon21

I've been campaigning against these monstrosities since my school days in the 1970s. Compassion in World Farming has been all over this since the 1960s and and Peta have been relentless on these issues for 40 years now.

Well done, Coastpath
I'm not sure it was generally known, though. The EU is always held up as having high standards but in fact, it is pretty disgraceful compared to the UK.

I must confess that, until I read that minks had escaped from farms in Denmark during Covid, I had no idea that this abominable practice was carried on in an EU country.

I knew about foie gras produced in France, of course, but have never touched it even when I was there, although the family I was with used to serve horsemeat (which I refused).

Coastpath Sat 19-Feb-22 10:50:06

It makes me so sad that a poster could see the subject of this thread and then reduce the discussion of this emotive and important subject to one word - 'clickbait'.

Coastpath Sat 19-Feb-22 10:35:28

France is the major producer of foie gras so perhaps your outrage should be directed at Macron and the EU for allowing this cruel practice to carry on.

From what I read here posters are outraged at all aspects of the trade wherever it occurs in the World. The difference is that we as individuals have no route to call on the French government to act. We have to campaign for change through our own government who, on this occasion, are not doing the right thing buy animals suffering in the EU and beyond.

When we had a voice in the EU, with MEPs acting as part of the decision making process in Europe, then we could campaign via our own MEP. Not now - that avenue has been closed for us.

Just the one route now, via Johnson's government.

Coastpath Sat 19-Feb-22 10:29:23

I've no idea why I linked to Faranzahs post.

Although on that subject, Ben Wallace the Defence Secretary is one of the people stalling this Bill so that the bearskins can still be imported from Canada. Could they not just wear different or fake fur hats?

Maudi Sat 19-Feb-22 10:28:08

I think foie gras and real fur should have been banned in the UK and the whole world for that matter.

France is the major producer of foie gras so perhaps your outrage should be directed at Macron and the EU for allowing this cruel practice to carry on.

Urmstongran Sat 19-Feb-22 10:22:22

I'm not generally a Tory supporter, think Boris should go, voted Remain too but I really am astonished at this thread!
All these years and no staunch EU supporters on here have mentioned these abominable practices taken for granted in Europe.

I’m not Calli it’s par for the course click bait.

Shameful and disgusting but hardly surprising with this bloody government..?

Shinamae

What about all the preceding Governments which allowed the import of about 200 tonnes of foie gras every year?
Did anyone worry about it then, when we were EU members?

Did anyone protest about mink farms in Denmark?

No, thought not!

17 million mink destroyed because of COVID! And many of the pelts had apparently been destined for China.

TBH I’d thought the huge factory-farming industry of pigs in Denmark was bad enough. It’s an awful long time since I’ve bought any Danish bacon. Or Lurpak, come to that.

Callistemon21 Sat 19-Feb-22 10:13:49

I think us Brits have moved on from wearing fur regardless of whether it’s ‘legal’ or not.

I think we have, Pantglas thank goodness.

I just find the shock and horror on this thread posted about this government not banning something we've imported from the faultless EU so hypocritical.

I'm not generally a Tory supporter, think Boris should go, voted Remain too but I really am astonished at this thread!

Josieann Sat 19-Feb-22 10:10:55

You can buy foie gras here which hasn't been force fed. I'm sure Waitrose sell it with an animal welfare guarantee. The practice used to turn my stomach in France when we drove past the fields of geese and ducks.

Pantglas2 Sat 19-Feb-22 10:06:01

Could the EU do that Callistemon or is it up to individual countries?

I’ve never been tempted by foie gras but did wear a lovely coney (rabbit) gilet in the 80s. I’ve always eaten rabbit so didn’t feel guilty about that on the possibly faulty premise that none of the poor animal was wasted!

A bit like the Spanish who eat all of the ? apart from the oink!

I think us Brits have moved on from wearing fur regardless of whether it’s ‘legal’ or not.
