Russia Today: TV regulator Ofcom asked to review channel's UK broadcasts

www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-60495417

I imagine that Russia would block BBC in retaliation and BBC World Service is hugely influential.

The UK viewing numbers for RT are tiny and many viewers only watch for a short time then switch off in disgust. I sometimes watch five minutes or so, just to remind myself how extreme its bias is. So no, I don't think that its UK broadcasting licence should be removed.

I’m sure someone on GN said they liked RT ? I’ve no experience of it. What does it do ?

paddyann54 Sat 26-Feb-22 12:18:23

I think that we often get a less biased view on RT than the BBC .I watch both RT and Aljazeera on a regular basis . No tory govt bias there .

Witzend Sat 26-Feb-22 12:23:40

TBH, Paddyann54, I’d have thought that any BBC bias was in the other direction!

volver Sat 26-Feb-22 12:31:37

I've only watched RT in hotel rooms when there is no other English language service, but I don't know much about it.

I've just been on their website and one of the articles there is that Russia have no designs on taking over Ukrainian territory. So, that's enough for me, thanks. Hardly what I'd call "unbiassed".

But I think you make an interesting point varian that I hadn't thought of. They've probably had more visits to their website and channel today than they have for quite some time.

I believe we should let RT continue to broadcast in the UK. To show to all how western countries accept free speech and even let our enemies broadcast in our country even when we are implacably opposed to them.

growstuff Sat 26-Feb-22 12:51:34

RT is anti-West Europe establishment, which appeals to a range of people, including conspiracy theorists, anarchists and the right wing.

GillT57 Sat 26-Feb-22 12:58:30

I agree with MOnica, we need to demonstrate free speech and free broadcasting.

paddyann54 Sat 26-Feb-22 13:43:54

Monica when did Russia become the enemy ...?
If I rememeber correctly Russia lost 25 MILLION people in WW11 .A much higher loss than any other nation ,if they are concerned about having NATO bases all around them maybe they have cause.
In my mind America is a far bigger threat in the World, how many countries have been invaded by the good old USA? How many wars have they been involved in for spurious reasons .Vietnam,Korea,of course they nuked Japan,Iraq...twice , sabre rattled Iran for decades ,Afghanistan for no reason other than they needed a fall guy for the TWIN TOWERS and they had their imput in many more .They have over 100 military bases around the world..why is that?

Namsnanny Sat 26-Feb-22 13:49:45

China is the worry now paddyanne.
I watch RT and Aljazeera. It's good to understand a different perspective. I dont have to agree.

Namsnanny Sat 26-Feb-22 13:51:09

.....and Putin is in cahoots with them. Note I did not say Russia.

volver Sat 26-Feb-22 14:11:27

paddyanne you and I normally agree but not this time.

Russia have nothing to fear from NATO. They could join themselves if they weren't so paranoid about the West having it in for them.

As for the US. They're no angels, that's for sure. But they didn't unilaterally nuke Japan, I don't think we were squeaky clean in that one. Eighty years ago! They didn't need a fall guy for 9:11, they needed the guy that caused it.

We can be critical of US foreign policy without being apologists for Putin.

M0nica Sat 26-Feb-22 14:13:48

Russia became the enemy in the last few weeks. Britain, together with other NATO countries has been supporting Ukraine and has instituted sanctions against Russia because of its invasion of Ukraine.

Which side are you supporting?

Grantanow Sat 26-Feb-22 15:48:15

I think RT should be shut down. Of course most intelligent people can assess propaganda for themselves but there are plenty of less educated people who can't. The Russians and others already jam transmissions they don't like so I wouldn't worry about retaliation.

It is.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 26-Feb-22 15:54:27

RT is a propaganda tool for Putin.

And yes whilst there are undoubtedly Russian citizens who disagree profoundly with Putin, there are Russians now killing innocent people, destroying their homes and taking away their human rights.

So I’m afraid Russia is our enemy.

Aspen Sat 26-Feb-22 16:23:11

Paddyann,

You mention US have 100 military bases, I think it is over 800!

They are supplying tons of weapons to Ukraine, when this is over will they present their bill like they did to us after WW2 which took 60 years to pay back, Gordon Brown made the final payment.

They would dearly love a couple of bases in Ukraine.

When are they going to return The Chagos Islands to their rightful inhabitants.

Lucca Sat 26-Feb-22 16:28:03

I saw a young Russian friend today. She could not stop crying at the shock of what has happened.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 26-Feb-22 17:33:00

Given that Putin is blocking social media and controlling information, the best way to show Russians the world’s displeasure is to block all sport and cultural stuff, apart from other stuff of course.

Oh dear Paddyann54!!

Having read your passionate pro-SNP posts for some years now, and having always made allowances for your strongly held beliefs, I am sorry to say that you seem to have completely lost the plot.

Kapitan Sat 26-Feb-22 19:44:26

Paddyann. ake some Prozac and Wine, chill out and read a Mills & Boon.

Katie59 Sat 26-Feb-22 21:20:28

Russia and the west have been daggers drawn since WW2, most of that time the US has been poking them, with propaganda that alleged that Russia had superior nuclear capability. When they knew that the US arsenal was 10 times the Russian, propaganda the the US voters lapped up.

Just as UK voters lapped up the Brexit propaganda.

From what I've seen of RT, it does attract the "disgruntled", the aim being to unite groups with very different agendas against the existing establishment.

M0nica Sun 27-Feb-22 16:52:40

Katie59 British voters did NOT lap up the Brexit propaganda. Many had made their minds up on the subject well before the Brexit campaign. Very near half of us supported staying in Europe. Most of us had also made up our minds before the campaign. The rest were persuaded by Remainer porpaganda.

What is the difference?
