Sorry to report that @ukhomeoffice is refusing entry to Ukrainians at Paris Gare du Nord seeking to join family in UK because they don’t have a visa. And not being helped to apply for a visa.

I hope your nephew stays safe, Zoejory. Having him out there must be a huge worry for you and your family.

As usual Johnson's empty rhetoric about "Britain leading the world" contrasts with the truth - the UK's policy on Ukrainian refugees is mean and nasty compared with that of the Euiropean Union.

Another benefit of Brexit - we get to be the least generous and least hospitible country in Europe?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who is thoroughly ashamed..

Sweden and Finland are in the EU but not in NATO , it’s not a condition of entry, despite all those who believe the EU is some sort of dictatorship. wish we had their protection.

What protection?

Do you mean NATO? If so, we have.

Do you mean the EU? The EU has no combined military structure so would not offer protection as a combined force.
Perhaps you mean solidarity? We can still show solidarity with other European countries whether they/we are in the EU or not.

The UK is part of NATO- but sitting alone in a separate room, somehow.

And tbh, a combined force seems to make a lot of sense right now, no?

As for solidarity- the whole on Continental Europe is offering free rail travel, cancelling all Visa requirements, and allowing its citizens to show real, on the ground, practical help in 100s of ways- hosting individuals and families, pets too- driving to the border with vans and picking up strangers, whole families again, and pets, and offering free accommodation, in their home, in holiday homes, putting people up in Hôtels for free, food, clothes and everything- paying for flights to come and join them. British people can't do any of that, unless they have direct relatives coming from Ukraine. THAT is solidarity.

DON'T WAVE FLAGS - WAVE VISAS.

They don’t seem worried about potential terrorists either.

Yvette Cooper has just pointed out in parliament that, contrary to what the government seem to be saying, the elderly woman at Gare du Nord is still not being allowed to travel to the U.K. to be with her daughter.

Patel is the most unspeakably evil Home Secretary that we have ever had.

No question.

And the reply to Yvette Coopers question if she could come in was a straight "Yes" from Patel.

It isn’t true though is it?

Doubt it

I laughed out loud reading that some commentators have said we need to be careful in case Russians sneak in posing as Ukrainian refugees. Worried that there aren't enough seats in the House of Lords for them all perhaps.

When Patel answered "yes" to the question about whether the elderly lady the commentator on Channel 4 News explained why that answer is "not exactly true". But then, when was the last time a Tory minister told the truth. If they told me tomorrow was Tuesday, I would have to check.

Did Russian oligarchs get told to pick fruit? Oh no, they had golden visas and citizenship on tap.

“Third defeat for the govt on the NationalityAndBordersBill . Lords force govt to comply with international law, honour its commitments under the 1951 Refugee Convention and the 1967 Status of Refugees protocol i.e. humane treatment of Refugees. Vote is 218 to 140, big defeat.”

They have to be careful whom they let in I recognise that. I think all these people that care should offer a room or if they have just a room a bed, a couch, for they have to go somewhere. To say that certain politicians don’t care is wrong, we all feel the pain of what is happening, it’s heart wrenching.
Do something practical instead of casting stones, send money even £5 helps, send clothes, anything. Don’t think, do.
I pray with all my heart that Putin is stopped, that although I hate violence, they have to take out any Russian planes not in their air space. He is mad enough to use chemicals and nuclear as his frustration increases.

allsorts you can’t make assumptions that people are not doing all those things unless you have evidence.

Who knows how much money people have contributed or offers of help etc.

The lady is not a mother because her daughter is over sixteen. There is an age limit on being a mother didn’t to know that. shock

If your town was made uninhabitable for a few months, would want to
1. stay with strangers in a very friendly neighboring overcrowded town speaking another language or
2. go to family, even if it is a few miles away, but with modern travel could be covered in a few hours.
These people are respectable people who had decent lives two weeks ago, like you are living now.

I’ve started watching the House of Lords when it’s on parliament today. So refreshing to listen to people speaking in such a calm, sensible, adult way with no shouting and jeering. I know people think the House of Lords isn’t very democratic but in recent years they have actually been our last line of defence in protecting democracy.

Just had a reply from my MP supporting giving Ukrainian’s safe passage.

He said that he’s never had so much mail on one subject.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 01-Mar-22 17:23:38

Patel has done a partial climb down after pressure from Tory back benchers.

She still isn’t budging on the visa issue.
