We cannot let unidentified ukranians in kali2, russian agents will be trying to slip in as per the salisbury poisonings. Worse case, they could be carrying very toxic poison such as ricin. Ukranians going to a relative will be traceable. The unidentified with evil intent will simply vanish in the crowds, poisoning reservoirs etc is very feasible. Talking of help and donations, many charities are pleading for people to stop sending inappropriate items, however well intentioned. What is needed is batteries, torches, small medical items such as first aid kits and paracetemol, Baby formula, sanitary products. What is NOT needed is bin bags full of people's second hand clothes which use up scarce transport space, and take volunteers hours to sort out ( and generally throw most of it out). I did read an intersting thread which reported that The Salvation Army are a big force in Ukraine, were before the current conflict, so are set up to provide the appropriate help.

Yes, one local site is pleading for all clothing to be clean, folded flat and in good condition. They are indeed having to sort out and throw away loads of stuff. Takes time, energy and disposal. Huge waste.

I was shocked to see the attitude of Priti Patel and Johnson about refusing Ukrainian refugees, even those joining real direct family and friends. Like the elderly lady trying to join her daughter and turned onto the street in Paris. Inhumane in the extreme.

And so proud and happy that they have now made an official announcement that this policy will be reversed. Wonderful. And work with other continental European countries to better coordinate and support those who are fleeing this terror.

The sheer racism of the constant 'mind your own business in your country' is just appalling. The UK is my country, and it has been for 52 years.

Dickens, yes, great post. And I am fully and totally aware that it is not just a question of giving someone a room or two, and that most people would not be able to take this on.

But people are, all over Continental Europe- doing just that. And this is just wonderful and truly heart warming.

I found a local place which is asking for nappies, milk, baby wipes, toiletries especially toothpaste and toothbrushes, and large ziplock bags. They will sort the toiletries into the bags in individual packs and they know how to get these items to where they are needed.

The Salvation Army would be a very good organisation to send donations to.

We have been asked in our area of France if we are able to take in any Ukranian refugees. No details as yet.

ex army dd has told me that many ex-soldiers she knows are on the way to ukraine. Good on them. Actions speak loudly.

One thing that has been very impressive and carried out at Biden”s decision was probably one of the best pieces of intelligence we have seen for a long time.

His decision to make public the Putin plan for invasion. They got it right almost to the hour, and by making it public, it scuppered Putin’s plan to claim it was as a result of Ukraine offensive that forced his hand.

His invasion is seen now exactly for what it is.

I suppose I shouldn't be shocked. However and thankfully, so far, despite the attitude of this government, we still live in an open and reasonably democratic country. This means we still have free speech no matter how shocking it proves to be.

But I am. Shocked I mean. To see someone who, on the boards of Gransnett, has supported Trump, a fanboy of Putin, then talking down the man who has shown leadership in these horrific times by supporting the democratic country of Ukraine. This is the same person, who belittles a trip in a speech by Biden but supports a man in hock to the Russians having pawned his soul to oligarchs. A man whose party has been funded by them. A man who, unable to remember any of what he is saying in a speech resorts to Peppa Pig. The man who 63% of our country want to resign.

I'm not downhearted though. I believe our wish for democracy is as strong as that of Ukraine. They have a true leader; we will have one too. The far-left and the far-right are one and the same when it comes down to it with their supporters both spouting newspeak in an attempt to turn lies into truth. But we are so much more aware of their dirty machinations. We know that when the chips are down all but a few, as we see, will stand up for our democracy.

It's embarrassing when you get older how often you "mis-speak". We can mostly get away with it, but a world-leader really can't, and shouldn't. He's not up to the job.
