Illegal immigrants’ wwm.

They used and still use the term “illegal” for those seeking asylum, it was a propaganda tool.

May used a hammer to crack what was at the time a nut. It was a very unpleasant way to proceed.

Whether or not the immigrants were 'legal' or 'illegal' does not detract from the fact that the 'hostile environment' had nothing at all to do with any Labour government.

Oddly enough, Gove's performance reminded me of another description of a temper tantrum we've seen recently. Is bullying and telling lies to the entire House of Commons OK, then?

Why do the Government need names of Ukrainian refugees before allowing them to stay in someone's home? It seems a crazy idea but given this Government's track record I can't say I am surprised.

You have again missed the point with all the virtue signalling hand wringing.

Where is this money to come from?

Plenty of money sloshing around with the old boys in westminster handing dodgy contracts to their mates and golf buddies. Oh - and awarding themselves a two grand rise for all their "hard work".

You can be sure none of this is coming from their bank accounts or pay packets.

We are a small island nation and already full up
Not so full up that there isn't a perfectly decent house behind us that has been empty for three years or more.
I'd be happy if refugees moved in there and I'm sure we'd all rally round to help and support them.

GillT57 Tue 15-Mar-22 10:24:46

Big Louis. You would do well to remember the adage "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all". If I posted what I really thought of your comments you would probably report me, and frankly, you aren't worth getting a warning for.

It's not coming out of your pocket, either, biglouis.

Some deeper thinking observers may notice that female reporters were brought in to hail the families who were taking in migrants. They were, at times delighted, upbeat, bright and all-good-times to the stories they were buying out
Really?
Are these the same female reporters in the thick of the besieged cities under bombardment? The ones whom we see in Kyiv, have seen in Gaza and other theatres of war in the world?
Whoulda thunk it.

What a cynical, misogynistic, ill -observed and unnecessary post yours was. biglouis.

Somehow after that, this did not surprise me either

Plenty of room in Poland, Germany and France which are much larger countries. We are a small island nation and already full up

Why has Michael Gove taken over the refugee organisation? Could it be because Patel has made a complete mess of it so far? What’s the betting the organisation of this scheme is sold off to someone like Dido Harding.

It's weird, isn't it? Is there any job in government that is not being done by Gove? It's a declaration that there is no one of any competence in this government.

Good post maw

Whitewavemark2 Wed 16-Mar-22 03:27:36

Anyone see the theatrics displayed by Gove?

What a very silly little man.

Convinced precisely no one.

Lucca Wed 16-Mar-22 07:02:28

Silly, nasty. But don’t start the little man thing again wwm.

The whole performance was by design. No one is saying the people of this country are not generous; they were saying the government is serially incompetent. We see so many straw men on GN; I feel he must have been taking lessons. That is all this was, a choreographed meltdown to get the Home Office off the hook.

Having the intention as a government to be more dictatorship than democracy is disturbing. Running an incompetent government is considerably less than this country deserves.

You could almost see the moment when he turned on the switch. Like a teenager at his first school debate.

It seems that we will only be able to open our doors to Ukrainian refugees who can fill in a fifty page visa application form in English and produce water and mortgage bills.

Shandy57 Wed 16-Mar-22 11:09:54

Sir Richard Harrington has come out of retirement to co-ordinate the efforts, he has only been in the job three days so far. He co-ordinated the Syrian refugee crisis, albeit it different, and did seem to know his stuff on the Channel 4 Live Ukraine - Should we do more? programme last night.

I cannot believe this government is portraying my country in this way. Listening to "Today [R4] this morning they were talking about all that was being done in Poland and then by the by other countries to move people out.

And then they arrive at the the English Channel.

It makes me want to to weep.

When a Ukrainian refugee crosses the border into Poland or Romania they are in the European Union.

No visas are required.

They are offered free transport to any city in an EU country.

When they arrive in a European city they are directed to reception centres where they are provided with free food and provisions - eg toiletries, clothes, other essentials.

There are medical services and provision for children. They are guided to safe accommodation or the means to move on.

How wonderful!

If only we were still an EU country and could be so welcoming to Ukrainian refugees.

Luckygirl3 Wed 16-Mar-22 22:11:54

We can be welcoming, EU or not. We have the choice to make the system simple. No-one is stopping the government from doing that.

varian Thu 17-Mar-22 13:59:11

I suspect that Boris Johnson and Pritti Patel are idealogically committed to "taking control of our borders" - and that's what's stopping them from being as welcoming as the European Union.
