Thanks for telling me about the antiseptic Dickens, I used to be on the PTA and it reminded me of Harvest Festival when we had out of date foods donated sad

I am pleased to see the response to the DEC appeal.

Apropos of not much but DH just won a raffle prize, collected this morning, which as a nice pack of ale and a glass.
The ale was bb April 2018.

Scammers quickly latch onto everything. I wouldn’t do this as you really don’t know who your money is going to.

karmalady Sat 05-Mar-22 13:19:14

shandy it is a way that donators are able to get money into ukraine. I don`t believe it is a scam

Shandy57 Sat 05-Mar-22 12:40:51

I've just had a look at Airbnb in Ukraine. Scammers are already at it, there is an advert for one room, without reviews, for £275 per night.

Such a good idea . People are booking air Bnb in Ukraine (and obviously not going) as a way to donate money directly to Ukrainians. Air Bnb are waiving all booking fees.

... what a brilliant idea!

Perhaps the 'moral' of all this is that people should help in any way they can - physically, emotionally, financially. Practical help is what's needed at the moment, and if some can "open their doors" that's just one way of contributing. But every effort is valid, and we don't need to compete in a 'who's doing the most' manner.

People care and are willing to do something about it. That's what is important. And it seems we Brits do care - a lot, if the DEC's comment is anything to go by.

Lucca thanks so much for that, such useful information, I am going to do that.

How much longer can we watch this destruction of a whole country.? There will be no stopping Putin now until he has all Europe under his boot. Those poor Russians are trapped because they spoke out. What fate befalls them ? He monitors every movement. Is there no way we can just take him out in the Kremlin ?

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) has praised the UK’s “astonishing show of support” for those affected by the conflict in Ukraine after raising £55 million in the first day of its appeal. Wow I hadn't seen that, thanks Callistemon21. So encouraging to know that the UK's population have responded as always to the needs of others. Makes you so proud of your fellow citizens of every race, religion, nationality, political party, whatever. When there's a need we all pull together ???

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) has praised the UK’s “astonishing show of support” for those affected by the conflict in Ukraine after raising £55 million in the first day of its appeal.

The charity, made up of 15 leading aid agencies, urged the public to keep momentum for the cause going as it revealed that “hundreds of thousands” of people had contributed within hours of the appeal’s launch.

Among them was the Queen, who made a “generous donation” on Thursday, along with the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge, the DEC said.

Apologies, posted too soon. My question is why would anyone see that as virtue signalling. There isn’t a competition on who does most to offer practical help, or to shed hopeless tears over the plight of the Ukrainian people.
A huge trailer left our Ukrainian centre today, bound for Poland and full of contributions of items listed as wanted/needed.

Did you watch BBC News last night. It was amazing to see people, families, queuing at Berlin station to wait to be allocated a family to go and stay with them in safety. Total strangers, pregnant women, women and children with their grand-mother, and dogs and cats - and people smiled and hugged and drove them home for a hot meal, a shower and a warm bed, for an unknown and unlimited period of time

It was so heart warming- and I was in tears. Call it virtue signalling if you wish.

I’m certain you aren’t the only person reduced to tears, regularly by the news.

I've just been shopping for our local collection point, a truck is going to Poland. Just as I handed it over I saw the expiry date on the First Aid kit - August 2021. I do feel upset, I paid a lot for it, but hopefully it is only the antiseptic cream that's out of date and can be substituted. I also bought Anadin, Immodium clone, and Sudocrem which is so multipurpose. Our point isn't collecting clothing.

... I've been using (unwittingly) antiseptic cream that's OOD - it's absolutely fine.

August '21... it's not like it's years out of date. One of the nurses who comes to my home told me it's OK to use it a few months over the date - possibly even for a year - as long as it hasn't changed colour or texture.
Anyway, a very nice gesture on your part - I'm sure those things are desperately needed...

The generosity of some people is just amazing. And the plight of others - but criticising those who state this, is easier, for sure!

After leaving this overnight I would like to say that I didn't comment on the Opening Post because of the Poster making it. I had no idea who it was, how long they have been on GN, or even what they have posted in the past.

I have deleted my posts as I had no intention to cause upset but I was only trying to give a reason/explanation why it had caught some people on the raw - as it did me. Whether or not other posters think it should have felt like that, it did.

I don't know why my posts warranted an attack but there you are ... that's the internet, isn't it?

As we have seen, some people have to make a war out of anything, sadly, even the goodwill of others.

“We've heard that a Ukrainian family of nine was turned back by Priti Patel this week. Calais town has taken them in and housed them.”

Sorry that was as clear as mud. I wasnt referring to your views on vaccine mandates but rather to my own.

Galaxy Thu 03-Mar-22 23:28:34

No it's ok Canadian gran when I said 'as well' I meant in addition to my concerns about their response to protests, I also disagreed with vaccine mandates. I didnt mean that you thought that you disagreed with vaccine mandates.
