Have angst that this may happen as British Nationals advised to leave Russia..so am praying hard that diplomatic discussions will prevail

No, I do not think Putin will stop, either.

The problem is that if the Ukraine falls, whichever land Putin then tries to take, is a member of both NATO and the EU, so it make no difference at all whether he tries to take Poland or Rumainia next or the Baltic states.

Unless we are all prepared to watch Russia march into, say , Poland and do damn all about it, like last time, it will mean war if he fires one shot across the border of a member of NATO.

So, obviously the best solution is for someone to assasinate Putin, as I doubt even the best diplomat in the world can get him to listen.

He can protect himself against snipers and against honey traps of either sex (I have no idea what his preference is) but no-one in the world can protect themselves against an assassin who is prepared to die by getting close up to the target wearing a suicide vest.

And even an amoured car will go up on a bomb placed in its path.

The other option is that some of either the leading military officers in Russia, the politicians or the Russian Mafia confront him and force him to either kill himself or be killed.

I doubt he is as hard to kill as Rasputin was.

There must have been many who wanted to kill Hitler, Stalin, Idi Amin, Pol Pot, but it didn't happen. Tryants seem to be good at avoiding assasination.

Some German generals did try to stop Hitler but their plot was discovered and stopped.

I agree that it’s extremely difficult to unseat a tyrant but they eventually fall eg Mussolini hung from a lamppost and Hitler committing suicide.

It’s all extremely disturbing, even more so because of the climate crisis.

I’ve been heartened to see so many ordinary Brits shouting their support. Both Unison and Unite members at the docks in Kent and Cheshire are refusing to unload Russian oil and gas.

I hope our Mi6 are involved but certainly not the CIA.
They haven’t covered themselves in glory in some covert operations.

True, good point. They have a history of getting rid of inconvenient leaders, including their own if the theories are to be believed.

President of Ukraine must be holding his head in his hands. He is desperate for Nato countries to come to his aid and we are terrified of starting a nuclear war so our hands are tied. I just hope that this doesn't make Ukrainian people turn against the West in years to come. My heart goes out to him and his people and I also feel for western leaders in the most dire of situations ? ? ? ?

I don’t think it will be a single government deciding anything unless the US get trigger happy, which I sincerely hope they won’t. I would have been more than worried if Trump were still in power.
Any outside action to take out Putin would be a special forces job. Ours are world leaders. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the SAS are in Russia already.

I’ve been aware of Bill Browder for some time. GB News gave him a lot of airtime last week.
I was surprised as there are many who believe that GB News is backed by the Russians.

I think they could have been in there before the invasion ?

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 05-Mar-22 14:33:58

They work in mysterious ways.

Totally agree plus US and other NATO special forces. They are all in situ no doubt.
Man is a total loose cannon, my worry is he's not adversed to Chemical weapons, we only have to remember Salisbury.

I just hope someone is plotting something. This can't carry on. NATO won't close air space so what more can be done?

I've just seen a heartbreaking photo of a little boy, 18 months old, who has been killed. His devastated parents are stood over his bed in the hospital. A medical worker has sunk to the ground.

Would Putin really start a nuclear war, world wide? Only one way to find out I suppose and I hope we never reach that point.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 05-Mar-22 14:48:59

NATO closing airspace would be lighting the blue touch paper.

When President Macron spoke the other night it sent a chill through me. After he has spoken with Putin he said it was only going to get worse.

Happysexagenarian Sat 05-Mar-22 15:07:40

If Putin was assassinated would there not be other like-minded Russian commanders waiting in the wings to take over from him? Waiting for their moment of glory perhaps?

DiscoDancer1975 Sat 05-Mar-22 15:22:49

I’ve had this feeling from the beginning.....so absolutely nothing to attribute this to, that Putin is terminally ill. So he just doesn’t care. His only concern now, is to be in the History books as a great leader of Russia.

Jaberwok Sat 05-Mar-22 15:23:11

Claus von Stauffenenberg and other conspirators did try to assassinate Hitler in 1944,(operation Valkyrie). The bomb went off but it didn't kill him although he was badly shocked and was slightly wounded. The plotters were rounded up and in all 7.000 arrested, 4,800 executed either by shooting or hanging by piano wire!

Zoejory Sat 05-Mar-22 15:34:50

And now Putin has likened sanctions to a declaration of war. So what does he mean with this comment?

Jaberwok Sat 05-Mar-22 15:40:41

I've no idea, but whatever it is, it won't be good that's for sure.

BlueBalou Sat 05-Mar-22 15:40:46

Putin has little or nothing to lose so I very much suspect that this is just the start. I cannot see how he’s going to be stopped and even if he’s assassinated he’ll have others following on.
Poland, Estonia, Finland, Sweden Sweden?
We’re impotent when a madman is on the rampage.

Kalu Sat 05-Mar-22 15:48:35

With Putin assassinated many lives will be saved, which is the priority before anything else can be addressed.

It will be extremely difficult to get close enough to wipe him out and I think the only chance of that happening, out of those who are close to him, one staff member has a change of heart with the realisation Putin would have no qualms about using nuclear weapons regardless of the possibility the west would likewise retaliate aiming at Russia.

LilacChaser Sat 05-Mar-22 16:10:41

It's not just our government that is weak - it is the whole of NATO according to Zelensky. I feel for him, I really do, watching his country and his people being destroyed with the rest of the world just watching on and doing seemingly very little.

But what a Catch-22 situation to be in. What is to be done, apart from sanctions, without throwing the West into a nuclear war?

Kind of puts Covid into context, all this, doesn't it?

LilacChaser Sat 05-Mar-22 16:18:41

DiscoDancer1975 That's exactly what my Dad said last weekend: that Putin's terminally ill so he's wreaking havoc on the world before he goes.

I don't think it's true, but if it is, let's hope it's a rapidly-spreading disease.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 05-Mar-22 16:21:36

Meeting organised by the EU in Brussels.
Liz Truss refusing to mention the main partner attending - the EU - nor the place where it was held - The European Council.

This is just like Russia, not mentioning the war etc. I would hope that people in the U.K. are not so gullible as some Russians appear to be.

Oldbat1 Sat 05-Mar-22 16:30:11

Keep hoping that he will be assassinated and it will take place very very soon. He is mentally deranged. He is a mass murderer. A war designed by himself for himself. Surely some of his generals have the wherewithal to do it.

Juliet27 Sat 05-Mar-22 16:36:30

That’s something else that worries me….all those poor people crowded together in undergrounds with no masks.

Think they are too afraid of losing their money and status Oldbat to say nothing of being brain washed.
