John Bercow has been found guilty of bullying staff by an enquiry according to Sky News.

He is banned from all parliamentary buildings for life.

He's very unhappy about it. I was never a fan of his. But I think a few posters on here thought he was rather good.

I think the ban is well deserved, nasty little man!

I thought he was rather good, if a bit self-obsessed. But anyone found guilty of bullying should be banned, no questions; let's hope that this is done consistently.

No place in the House of Lords then tg.

LilyoftheValley Tue 08-Mar-22 11:38:01

Good thing. Ghastly little man.

Doodledog Tue 08-Mar-22 11:40:39

Hmmm. It is interesting that someone who enforced the law in parliament in ways that irritated the government was investigated and found guilty under the same government, and is now prevented from having any further influence in parliament.

It's really difficult to argue against the idea that bullies shouldn't be stopped in their tracks, but this seems to me to have the whiff of fish about it.

horrible little jumped-up twerp. Serves him right

eazybee Tue 08-Mar-22 11:53:16

Well. My word.
He must be even worse than I thought.

25Avalon Tue 08-Mar-22 12:00:00

He is doing a Rumplestiltskin in rage.

Purplepixie Tue 08-Mar-22 12:01:34

Never a fan of his as he always looked like a bully and resembled my first ex husband.

MayBee70 Tue 08-Mar-22 12:02:43

And yet Priti Patel is still in parliament…wasn’t she found guilty of bullying?

GillT57 Tue 08-Mar-22 12:06:27

Compared to the rather weak Speaker we have now, Bercow was good at keeping control. If he has been found guilty of bullying, his punishment is right, and the same should apply to Pritti Patel, equality and all that.

winterwhite Tue 08-Mar-22 12:09:47

Agree with Doodledog.

In what way is Bercow in a position to bully anyone now? What staff does he have.

And if he were to be re-elected to the H of C, what then?

I believe a Cabinet minister has been found guilty of bullying and no action taken whatsoever.....

This sounds vindictive.

Agree with Doodledog

hmm

amp.theguardian.com/politics/2018/oct/15/westminster-mps-treated-staff-like-servants-harassment-inquiry-finds

No 'Independent Panel' set up to investigate this lot.

Perhaps Priti Patel should have been referred to them, too. But she was investigated by an entirely different mechanism, the Cabinet Office, and the PM overruled it. His Advisor on the Ministerial Code resigned in consequence.

I'm not defending Bercow, just wondering why such different standards seem to be applied. After all, bullying is bullying, whatever method is used to investigate it, and surely those found to have been bullies should be treated the same way?

The 2018 article shows that bullying is probably endemic in Parliament. To single out one person looks less like concern for the welfare of parliamentary staff and more like revenge...

MaizieD Tue 08-Mar-22 12:32:45

Hmmm. It is interesting that someone who enforced the law in parliament in ways that irritated the government was investigated and found guilty under the same government, and is now prevented from having any further influence in parliament.

It also looks as though the Independent Panel was set up by Johnson in 2020 specifically to look at the Bercow claims. Have they 'investigated' anyone else? You'd think it would have been publicised if they have.

Rotten fish smell emanating from this government...

It was an independent panel. The Guardian doesn't seem to be making excuses for him. His behaviour was pure bullying. And he loved himself far too much. That's just my opinion, of course.

Well I feel for the people who complained about him. They aren't high powered MPs with an axe to grind.

JenniferEccles Tue 08-Mar-22 12:46:45

I’m not in the least surprised at this. He is an appalling, opinionated little twerp and now to learn that he’s also a bully, well it just adds to the nastiness of the man.

His behaviour in trying to overturn the democratic decision to leave the EU was nothing short of disgraceful.

CvD66 Tue 08-Mar-22 12:49:14

While I cannot condone John Bercow's behaviour, I find it incredible that just one month after Dame Laura Cox's report into bullying and harassment (from 200 cases of evidence)in the HoC, Pritti Patel was excused by the PM despite an inquiry finding that her behaviour met the civil service definition of bullying (in more than one ministerial role). Bercow was a thorn in PM's side, Patel has been his vicious sidekick. Is that right, fair or decent??

lavendermine Tue 08-Mar-22 12:49:25

Good. Horrid little man.

Blossoming Tue 08-Mar-22 12:58:50

If they’re going to kick all the bullies out of Parliament there won’t be many left.

Why? Because he wasn't posh?
