Nicola ... again. Shut up woman! Are you for real?

Joe Biden won’t. Boris Johnson won’t. Ben Wallace won’t. Nor will, as far as we know, every other leader of a Nato member country. However, it is clear that Nicola Sturgeon just might.

Might do what, you ask? Consider backing a Nato no-fly zone over Ukraine, that’s what. Even if such an action risked a major escalation of the West’s dispute with a nuclear-tipped Russia.

The First Minister thinks that having warplanes, including British ones, taking on, and possibly shooting down, Vladimir Putin’s planes is worth “serious consideration”.

It’s a truly astonishing suggestion that was being described by enemies and one-time supporters alike as another piece of grandstanding by someone who appears to be desperately seeking a niche for herself on the international stage.

Totally agree with you on this GG13. I can’t blame the man for his pleas. What his country is suffering right now is tragic. But NATO is there for a reason and escalation would mean far far worse loss of lives, heartbreaking to say it though. Which is why we all feel helpless watching events unfold. But we have to stay out of direct confrontation.

No I don’t read Littlejohn FannyC.

FannyCornforth Fri 11-Mar-22 09:40:03

Urms if you cut and paste from another source you really ought to acknowledge that, and especially name the author.

Urmstongran Fri 11-Mar-22 09:40:35

We are only half the size of Scotland in Gtr. Manchester so maybe ‘half an Eccles cake’ electorate!

Urmstongran Fri 11-Mar-22 09:41:41

Apologies FannyC I do forget sometimes. Yes my OP was taken from a Telegraph article.

Urmstongran Fri 11-Mar-22 09:44:27

Here's the thing UG - its not all about you
Hard not to think so volver when it’s a bit of a pile on and you don’t mention to whom your comments are directed!

As you were.

FannyCornforth Fri 11-Mar-22 09:46:36

That’s okay Urms?
I didn’t know who said ‘shortbread senate’ in the first place on the thread.

I’ve been trying to come up with alliterative phrases that contain the words ‘flat cap’ or ‘whippet’
(Not that ‘shortbread senate’ is alliterative in the first place anyway)

I really ought to get up…

JaneJudge Fri 11-Mar-22 09:48:33

There has been some quite frankly outright xenophobic posts that have been on for months. Why is GN allowing it to go on?

I agree with you too galaxy about men telling women to shut up online. I hadn't realised how awful it was until I joined facebook

Urmstongran Fri 11-Mar-22 09:49:09

But there’s the nub of the matter vegansrock ... Nicola Sturgeon ought not, in my opinion, have used her platform to publicly ‘consider it’. What planet is she on?

Petera Fri 11-Mar-22 09:49:18

Oh well at least St Nicola has apologised retrospectively to witches.

Why does everyone think this is either funny or pointless? This was a shameful period in our country’s history – the number of women brutally killed by far exceeds the number of women killed in the far more famous Salem witch trials. And – I don’t apologise for saying this – mostly because they wouldn’t ‘shut up’ and dared to have opinions.

If anyone here seriously believes that the situation in Ukraine would be better if the Scottish government had not taken the time to issue this pardon then I, for one, would like to see a clearly reasoned argument. Otherwise I would hope that most of our politicians are capable of dealing with more than one thing at a time. Although some of them make me wonder.

Also, 'she' has not apologised retrospectively to 'witches', the government has apologised to ordinary women who were murdered under the pretext that they were witches.

Coastpath Fri 11-Mar-22 09:50:23

Reading the title of the OPs thread rather gave the game away that they were not looking for a reasoned debate on the issue.

It seems to me that is always the case. Inflammatory language, a full colour picture, plenty of excitable punctuation and a question styled to goad. The tabloids brought to life through the medium of Gransnet post. Anyone who sees through the fib construct is 'cancel culture at its worst' or has no sense of humour.

I don't think the OP isn't looking for a reasoned debate but a scenario in which long held prejudices, outmoded insults and slanted views can be churned out in order to create an 'other' or scapegoat to scorn or blame.

Love Thy Neighbour for a 2022 audience.

Also

Anyone who sees through the fib construct is 'cancel culture at its worst' or has no sense of humour. Or is part of a pile on.

^At least it’s a step on from exonerating witches from 500 years ago which was the important issue of the day at the Shortbread Senate earlier in the week^

FannyCornforth Fri 11-Mar-22 09:57:15

I just think that some people just really need an outlet to argue.
I need an outlet to talk sh*te sometimes.

It’s noteworthy that in Love Thy Neighbour the black couple (attractive, intelligent, well mannered) always had the upper hand over the oafish and racist white couple.
Similarly to (the vastly superior) ‘Till Death us do Part, it really wasn’t racist in its aim.

Coastpath Fri 11-Mar-22 09:57:23

Good post Petera.

FannyCornforth Fri 11-Mar-22 10:00:05

Love thy Neighbour

FannyCornforth Fri 11-Mar-22 10:00:35

FannyCornforth Fri 11-Mar-22 10:01:54

Petera yes. ?

Coastpath Fri 11-Mar-22 10:03:43

I should stay in bed FannyCornforth it's raining cats and dogs out there.

JaneJudge Fri 11-Mar-22 10:11:26

It is nice here smile

Esspee Fri 11-Mar-22 10:12:46

Urmstongran

If GNHQ take this post down it will be a shame.
An opinion is not bullying or toady just because it doesn’t chime with yours Espee.

Cancel culture at its best! Let’s not have a debate ... just shut it down eh? That’s best for some.

When you twist something someone says for your own purposes so that those reading it might think it is a factual representation and respond based on your prejudices then you are peddling false news.
If gransnet allows such misrepresentation then they become a tool of those who peddle such lies.

There appears to be an unwritten law on GN, we can post what we like about any MP from anywhere in the U.K. apart from St.Nicola…

Fair comment GrannyGravy

I have no confidence her, it is embarrassing to watch her.
Unfortunately, there is no-one to take her place. There is a distinct lack of statespersons (in the true definition of the word) in this incompetent government.

All round, I think Marydoll, where are the statesmen and women?

An ex-Military Chief has spoken out against her rash words.
Ms Sturgeon said that Putin is not acting rationally. We know that so would it be wise to provoke him further?

Her predecessor Alex Salmond said: In every international conflict for 60 years, the national movement in Scotland has stood for de-escalation and peace - not escalation and Armageddon

What is the point of the UN if they can't prevent these conflicts and wars from happening?

volver Fri 11-Mar-22 10:14:43

I do actually disagree with you this time Esspee

I hope they leave it.

Disinfectant effect of sunlight, and all that...

It is nice here smile

Oh lovely, enjoy it.

Callistemon21 Fri 11-Mar-22 10:16:18

I don't think the OP isn't looking for a reasoned debate
Oh!

I was trying to be reasonable.
That was a waste of time then.
I should have rtt first
