Joe Biden won’t. Boris Johnson won’t. Ben Wallace won’t. Nor will, as far as we know, every other leader of a Nato member country. However, it is clear that Nicola Sturgeon just might.

Might do what, you ask? Consider backing a Nato no-fly zone over Ukraine, that’s what. Even if such an action risked a major escalation of the West’s dispute with a nuclear-tipped Russia.

The First Minister thinks that having warplanes, including British ones, taking on, and possibly shooting down, Vladimir Putin’s planes is worth “serious consideration”.

It’s a truly astonishing suggestion that was being described by enemies and one-time supporters alike as another piece of grandstanding by someone who appears to be desperately seeking a niche for herself on the international stage.

Good spot Callistemon

I don't think the OP is looking for a reasoned debate.

Which sea do you think the Baltic runs into the Pacific?
Is this a trick question?
Are you talking about the direct route (as the crow flies) or the long way round, or the scenic route as the satnav says?

I'm talking about the one that is shown on any atlas!!!!
I think the sat nav route might take you into some pack ice. The long way round via the Panama canal a couple of months and the only ports he has open at the moment are via the Baltic Sea, North Sea and the Atlantic.
Before you try to trip me on saying the Dardanelles,I know all the other names as well Bosphorus and even the Hellespont.
You still haven't answered the question are Russian fishing vessels still using Scottish ports?

The Baltic is technically a part of the Atlantic Ocean as is the North Sea so you are correct, I'm not arguing.

I said nothing about fishing vessels, I think that was another poster.

It's odd - the clouds are scudding really fast but the trees are only gently swaying!
And yes, it's raining.

Our storm is due after lunch, just in time for when the children come out of school.

It’s as if the weather gods know and take delight in soaking the little treasures and those on pick-up duty.

Never regretted moving to the NE, where we have a different climate grin

Warm, overcast, gentle breeze. Light rain forecast for this afternoon. ?

Callistemon21 Fri 11-Mar-22 10:46:01

We have a micro climate here too but today it's changed direction!

Can you see the Baltic from there?

No, but I can see the Thames Estuary from the end of my road.

No, but I've swum in it and been across it on ferries.

DaisyAnne I am not suggesting that at all. To disagree is not the same as bullying.

No, it isn't.

But that was not the point you were making. You were excusing the bullying on here by suggesting it's worse elsewhere. That's a bit like saying "I was only stealing. He murdered someone". Could you explain the logic of this? To me, it appears to be a specious argument and one that does not say anything good about those using it.

DH was a tour guide on the East Coast of Scotland

One poor befuddled tourist who'd just got off a cruise, and had no idea where there were, once asked him if the body of water they were looking at was the English Channel.

He should have just said yes, after all they're all linked, aren't they?

A tourist once asked me if the coast they could see across the Bristol Channel from Somerset was France.

I can totally see why President Zelensky is asking for a no fly zone in his situation, he is not silly to to do so. He is a man who’s Country has been invaded and he is trying to do everything/anything he can to defeat his aggressor.

Unfortunately as has been said many many times over its not as easy as it appears, and the end game would be WW111…

We know what Russia has done in the past when "Red Lines" were drawn and then not carried through. It cost thousands of lives lost to chemical weapons; it is an unimaginable death or even life for those who are in the area where such weapons are used.

We do have to consider seriously, as Nicola Sturgeon has suggested. What argument is there for not doing so?

Apologies FannyC I do forget sometimes. Yes my OP was taken from a Telegraph article.

But there’s the nub of the matter vegansrock ... Nicola Sturgeon ought not, in my opinion, have used her platform to publicly ‘consider it’. What planet is she on?

Why not? We need to say that behaviours of the Russians will not go unpunished. We need them to know it is being considered and what is being considered.

Why do you think we should not be doing this? Nicola Sturgeon is the leader of a separate country. It is her job to let them know the governments direction of thinking. Why do you think it isn't?

Oh well at least St Nicola has apologised retrospectively to witches.

Why on earth do you think this is worth a post? Do you think the misogyny of the middle ages could not return? Do you undervalue people's lives so much?

War and attrition is not a joke. Neither is persecution.

fairfraise Fri 11-Mar-22 11:09:51

DaisyAnne I simply said what I thought. We live in a free speech nation thankfully. I don't often go on to political sites on here and just spoke what I thought.

I have just had a quick Google of newspaper articles regarding Ms, Sturgeons statement.

There does not appear to be a lot of support for her point of view.

As has been stated by numerous Generals, war analysts, NATO and Heads of Governments that if the West /NATO bring in a no fly zone over Ukraine for it to work it would have to be policed, the first time a Russian plane entered the forbidden airspace it would be shot down. This would mean that us and our allies are at war with Russia.

If any of you are content with this scenario, then hats off to you as you are either incredibly brave or incredibly………………(feel free to fill in the blanks)

I applaud you GrannyGravy for daring to say such a thing on this site and I'm not being facetious. I could fill in the blanks with a few choice words.
St.Nichola has spoken and the S.N.P has risen to her standard yet again. A woman with no compunction about rising up against her former mentor and friend, how would she treat the Sasannachs across the Border.

Yesterday and today experts have changed what they are saying because the situation has changed. Putin's has suggested that Ukraine, backed by the West, has been making biological weapons. Johnson has been talking about Putin's comments this morning. He points to Putin's habit of raising a "false flag" and then doing just what he is accusing others of doing.

We either draw Red Lines about such things or we appease Putin. Nicola Sturgeon has suggested which side Scotland would be on. My worry is which side some of the posters on here would take.
