Nicola ... again. Shut up woman! Are you for real?

Joe Biden won’t. Boris Johnson won’t. Ben Wallace won’t. Nor will, as far as we know, every other leader of a Nato member country. However, it is clear that Nicola Sturgeon just might.

Might do what, you ask? Consider backing a Nato no-fly zone over Ukraine, that’s what. Even if such an action risked a major escalation of the West’s dispute with a nuclear-tipped Russia.

The First Minister thinks that having warplanes, including British ones, taking on, and possibly shooting down, Vladimir Putin’s planes is worth “serious consideration”.

It’s a truly astonishing suggestion that was being described by enemies and one-time supporters alike as another piece of grandstanding by someone who appears to be desperately seeking a niche for herself on the international stage.

volver I wouldn't expect Sturgeon to comment publicly on a matter that's not devolved to Scotland. We have a UK defence minister and that's who I expect to hear from on the matter of Ukraine.
Plenty up here for Sturgeon to be getting on with!

Would you not?

Ach well.

Elegran

Anyone who knows what "to goad" means can probably work out for themselves what "goady" means.

While we are on the subject, the noun for the activity of deliberately goading people online into responding angrily so that a heated argument follows is apparently "goaderyfuckery", shortened to "gfery". We learn something every day on GN.

Never heard that one either and am certainly not likely to use it, except if it is used about me.
If you choose to think that I really knew what it meant and hadn't the mental capacity to work it out which it seems I didn't then that's your opinion and your welcome to it.
I shall live happily in my little rural idle" Far from the madding crowd".,and continue to use my regional vernacular.

That's the commonly used Mumsnet version, Elegran. grin

I think I used it once, to a chorus of much pearl clutching and telling off for bad language...

I'm a bit surprised at the current 'discussion' of 'goady' because I thought everyone knew what 'to goad' meant. A goad is the sharp stick (or worse) that people use to get animals (usually bovines) to move along.

I think that holding the cat's bottom to the fire is definitely within the definition... grin

I do actually disagree with you this time Esspee

I hope they leave it.

Disinfectant effect of sunlight, and all that...

I wasn't looking for the thread to be removed, just a reminder that Gransnet doesn't appreciate members presenting their warped interpretation as fact, thereby misdirecting other members who had incomplete knowledge of the context.

I do like your comment about the disinfectant effect of sunlight volver.

Understood Esspee.

Actually this thread has renewed my faith in the combined ranks of serious Gransnet posters grin

Espee, I wasn't looking for the thread to be removed, just a reminder that Gransnet doesn't appreciate members presenting their warped interpretation as fact, thereby misdirecting other members who had incomplete knowledge of the context.

That sums it up exactly.

Like Volver, I too wanted the thread to remain.

I suppose it's more surprising to me that she feels it's up to her to say anything. Defence is not part of the remit of the Scottish 'government'.

So do you expect her to remain mute when asked the direct question - as she was.

Do posters not realise when they are making rediculous comments?

AGAA4 Fri 11-Mar-22 17:06:48

Nicola's turn today. Who will it be next? H and M probably.

Blossoming Fri 11-Mar-22 17:13:23

Don’t panic, there’s a new H&M thread started for your enjoyment grin

Dinahmo Fri 11-Mar-22 17:13:57

I don't think that this post should be removed. It just shows the poster up for what she is - someone who likes to goad well meaning people into making outrageous comments.

Returning to the actual subject - whether NATO countries should support a no fly zone over Ukraine. I agree that at the moment it would be totally wrong to antagonise Poo Tin further because he will commit even more atrocities than he has already.

Today we have learned that he has 16,000 Syrian soldiers coming to his aid. The invasion is moving rather more slowly than he anticipated but it will end in the major cities being destroyed. Looking at the map of where the Russian army is, it would seem very easy for Poo Tin to work his way around the borders between Ukraine and Russia and then enter NATO countries.

At which point NATO will intervene so one could say that they might as well do so now. NS is merely positing the idea - not saying that we should actually invade right now.

Josieann Fri 11-Mar-22 17:14:24

I saw that!
But then serious posters here don't read every thread apparently!

DaisyAnne I was making a 'rediculous' comment. I'm just another irritated Scot who'd be more impressed if she spent less time on self promotion and more on trying to make up for the mess her 'government' have made of so many aspects of Scottish life.

Urmstongran Fri 11-Mar-22 17:20:27

I’ve been out for the afternoon. So many comments! When I went out you were all talking about the weather so I assumed this thread would have fizzled by now. Strange it hasn’t.

The SNP get returned to power in an election, with a minority vote - because, sadly, the opposition is split between several parties. So Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP/Green coalition will continue to represent the country on the world stage.

When ITV asked Nicola Sturgeon for her opinion on defence, could she not have demurred? Most clever politicians would have done. Maybe she likes the limelight. To stay relevant on the world stage? I don’t think she could resist ...

Urmstongran Fri 11-Mar-22 17:25:48

With you there Aveline (and my Scottish 90y old stepfather).
For example, whatever happened to the missing £600k from the SNP which is still being probed by Police Scotland six months on? Where’s the cash gone Nicola?

volver Fri 11-Mar-22 17:28:24

Do you have a Scottish stepfather UG? You never said.

Urmstongran Fri 11-Mar-22 17:33:58

?
It adds balance volver because I love him and value his opinions. Shows I’m not ‘anti-Scottish’. Just fed up of listening to La Sturgeon.

FannyCornforth Fri 11-Mar-22 17:37:07

I know that we are here for a variety of reasons, but Urms, just try and enjoy the moment in Malaga

volver Fri 11-Mar-22 17:39:06

Well my DH and all his family are English-born, but apparently I can still be anti-English.

Who knew?

GillT57 Fri 11-Mar-22 17:40:21

Back refreshed from lunch and ready with another anti NS rant. wineIn view of the millions of roubles washing around your hero Johnson it is a strange thing to stir the pot about.

It has renewed my faith in kind people as well.
I was forgiven for thinking someone was taking the proverbial, that Scots were using a code and Goady was explained to me. I should have realised it was related to goading but didn't. I'm not up with all the modern terms my DH live the other end of the country and we usually talk on Face time I'm going to ask them if they knew.
My husband didn't but worked it out. He is much better at words than me.
I do have a stock of very old fashioned sayings taught by my grandmother who was descended from Border Reivers. My swearing or cursing is usually of the blaspheming type, my grandson has been in trouble for muttering Jesus Christ, which he has got off me and his mum. I would never say f...off but would tell someone to" run to hell", or" bugger off ',which today would be seen as worse.
All's fare in Love and Gransnet.smile

Wrong again!
That said, we will share a bottle of Rioja with our slo cook curry later this evening.

Thank you Gill57 some genuine kindness at last.
And from you FannyC.
I appreciate it - it’s nice.
