Everything crossed. Nazanin has had her passport returned.

Urmstongran

The only thing that troubles me about all of this is that Nazarin apparently got into a spot of bother when she visited Iran earlier than this time and she was warned by HMG prior to going. Iran was considered a rogue state. Why on earth did she go back? I’d have thought one warning would have been enough.

It has occurred to me to hope that she is now determined never to risk going back

First time in a long time that the tears I’ve shed were tears of joy. Maybe, just maybe this is a turning point and that all things are going to get better.

Why could the payment not have been made six years ago?

DaisyAnne Wed 16-Mar-22 18:28:29

Really Urmstongran? You needed to say that today. Is this to take the criticism away from your beloved Brexit Boris?

Urmstongran Wed 16-Mar-22 18:33:41

Me too GagaJo. If she wants to see her parents let them all meet up in Dubai or similar.

Her parents live in Iran and she used to take her daughter back so they could see the little girl. I'm sure everyone on here will understand that.

It is wonderful that Nazanin is being reunited with her husband and her daughter, but I feel slightly sorry for her parents.

It is almost certain that Nazanin will never revisit them and they may never be able to visit her here and see their daughter and grand-daughter again.

GagaJo Wed 16-Mar-22 18:41:19

No dolphinedaisy, I wouldn't take that risk. Not with a country like Iran. I know an Iranian woman who will never go home. Been here 20 years. Never been back.

Urmstongran Wed 16-Mar-22 18:46:39

I know that dolphindaisy and I understand why she wanted to visit. But the FO advised her not to go because the last time she visited there had been trouble. The exact reason for her arrest was initially unclear, though according to Amnesty International it is believed to be related to the 2014 imprisonment of several Iranian technology news website employees. Nazanin worked for BBC Persia on line. She was warned she was at risk by going back. I suppose she was just naive about it all. She has paid a very heavy price for her decision. I wish her well going forward.

I did think of that and hope they will be all right.

There were reasons apparently why the debt wasn’t paid before.
Something to do with a change of regime in Iran some years ago, along with sanctions imposed on the country.

I believe there is another person allegedly wrongly held who is still imprisoned there.

I think he has been released from prison and is with family there.

The reason the money was not returned but has been in a holding account is complicated, beginning with revolution, regime change, UN and EU sanctions, etc.

Whatever the reason, taking innocent civilians hostage and keeping them there for years is absolutely horrific.

Why could the payment not have been made six years ago?

Because there were concerns about what the money would be spent on - bombs for Syria or Yemen? There’s been a recent government change in Iran and they were now prepared to guarantee that it will only be used on humanitarian causes.

There’ll be no chance of little Gabriella going to bed and sleeping tonight! ❤️❤️❤️

They money got caught up with the sanctions on Iran. We also had to have the agreement of the US.

Happy day indeed for parts of two families. It'll be a long but hopefully plain sailing journey to renewed family life for them. My heart feel warm at the prospect.

Oldwoman70 Thu 17-Mar-22 06:51:37

Lovely pictures of the family being reunited - so glad she is now safely back home. I hope they will allowed some privacy to resume a normal family life.

Credit where it’s due to Liz Trusss’ statement, but she spoilt it with her Tweet which was headed with. a picture of…herself.

christine96777 Thu 17-Mar-22 07:57:52

Let's hope she and her husband, can rebuild a life together, with their children. They certainly deserve a good life together.

Shropshirelass Thu 17-Mar-22 08:24:46

She is home, what a relief for everyone. So lovely for her daughter. It is going to be quite an adjustment for everyone involved, I just hope the press give them space.

TerriBull Thu 17-Mar-22 08:42:47

The pictures of the family's reunification is the happiest story amongst the truly awful news. I hope, in spite of the awful trauma of Nazanin's imprisonment and the overwhelming worry as to whether she was ever going to be released, I hope they can somehow make up for all that lost time in going forward. Wishing the three of them and their extended family a peaceful happy life from now on.

The next time somebody starts opining on here that all MPs are the same and they're just in it for themselves, can someone bring up Tulip Siddiq please?

Good luck to all of them.

JaneJudge Thu 17-Mar-22 09:17:08

It is wonderful news smile

Ladyleftfieldlover Thu 17-Mar-22 09:17:23

I just hope the dreaded tabloids keep their distance.

volver Thu 17-Mar-22 09:27:34

Regarding the tabloids, if none of us click on their pictures or buy the papers containing unofficial pictures of them, they won't try to tell us they are hounding her for public interest.

Its up to us.
