The Prime Minister said there must be some parental involvement if children make life-changing decisions about gender.

I totally agree with this decision. Children when young can be easily influenced or uncertain.

“I don't think that it's reasonable for kids to be deemed so-called Gillick-competent to take decisions about their gender or irreversible treatments that they may have. I think there should be parental involvement at the very least," he said.

Better late than never Boris.

I don't think anyone, under 18, should be allowed to make life changing decisions, which they may (and have) changed their their minds about later.

If they still feel the way they do, as legal adults, then fine, do what you need to do.

Teenage years are full of angst, uncertainty and confusion at times - but most of it passes.

DiamondLily Wed 06-Apr-22 15:53:26

But, Johnson changes his mind as well - he just says what he thinks is popular with whoever he's talking to. ?

Pepper59 Wed 06-Apr-22 16:24:58

I would not want my child making such a huge, life- changing decision until they are eighteen. As DiamondLily says, if they still feel the same then fine. Hopefully, the young people get counselling and support throughout.

At last some common sense!

Well done Labour, power was actually vaguely in your grasp but no you decide this is the hill you want to die on.

Ilovecheese Wed 06-Apr-22 18:45:23

Galaxy So frustrating !
What is Starmer thinking about, he needs to get on top of this now. (Or is he just "keeping his powder dry")

Urmstongran Wed 06-Apr-22 19:20:53

Starmer isn’t doing Labour any favours is he? Sort out Some leadership man!

snowberryZ Wed 06-Apr-22 19:35:29

How many children would want to transition if they'd never heard the word Transition. Or Trans hmm.
Not a lot I'd imagine. They'd just be getting on with the business of being a child

No wonder so many children are confused, when they're having it pushed down their throats 24/7.

.

I'm also horrified how many teachers are pandering to this nonsense..
By allowing this mass brainwashing in schools they are failing to safeguard our children.
Shocking.

hugshelp Wed 06-Apr-22 19:43:26

Agree with everything said. Kids imagine themselves to be all sorts of things and are so easily influenced and confused. They are being used as pawns to validate the beliefs of adults.

I know of a person who was born as a girl, but told her parents when she was old enough to speak, at the age of two, that she wanted to be a boy.

Fortunately she had a very supportive family and was able to transition, starting at puberty.

He is now a happy and successful young man.

Puberty must be a nightmare for children who are convinced that they have been assigned the wrong sex.

I've got three grandsons at school snowberryZ one at secondary school and two at primary school. There has never been any sign of them being brainwashed into anything to do with transitioning.

I would have thought Johnson was the last person to speak on any parenting issue.

Urmstongran Wed 06-Apr-22 19:51:34

True varian. It must be awful for the (tiny minority) who feel they are trapped in the wrong body. But in my opinion, better to wait for conversion therapy until absolutely sure. I’ve read articles from young adults, regretting bitterly their decisions made in their early teens. They say mental health issues and teenage confusion played a huge part in their choices to go down the pathways they did.

Absolutely.

Posted too soon.

Meant to say:

Absolutely. cChildren ARE being used as pawns to validate the beliefs of adults.

This is what we’re up against:

A spokesman for the online gender clinic, GenderGP, says: “We operate an informed model of care – that means we start from a position of belief if you say you are trans. Our job is not to try and validate your gender, or prove whether you are trans. Our job is to support you to make the best decisions.”

Urmstongran Wed 06-Apr-22 21:23:54

An article in the Telegraph today headlined:

“I was allowed to transition at 18 without question – but I regretted it

Allie had private gender therapy to become male, but transitioned back following an autism diagnosis. Here, she shares her story...”

But he's not a man.
He's a transman.

Taking testosterone doesn't change your chromosomes.

Finally.

I think the tide is turning ....
I think the war in the Ukraine is focusing minds. Less ‘la,la land’ and more questioning about issues. Less of the ‘Emperor’s New Clothes’.

People usually only wake up to something when it starts to directly affect them.

I'm old enough and ugly enough to have seen hrt go through numerous cycles of popularity.
When my mother's generation took it, it was in favour. Doctors would prescribe it.freely.
Then, there were a few years where there were lots of media led health scares and doctors were reluctant to prescribe it. Women had to jump through hoops to get it.
At the moment it's in favour again.
But, I wouldn't be surprised if we were due another decade of it being out of favour again.

Now, can you imagine the outcry if middle aged natural born women were to be refused hrt - a drug thats original purpose was to make WOMEN'S lives easier.
And yet Doctors will be prescribing HRT to MEN. No questions asked. Because they want to be their true selveshmm

I can see that happening.

Maybe all these
"We should all kind" and "it's not hurting anybody" women will finally wake up.

I dislike agreeing with anything BJ says, but on this issue I am in complete agreement. And like others have said, I’m disappointed (to say the least) that all the other major political parties are not saying the same.
I was brought up in a Labour voting household, my late Mum and Grandparents would be appalled at what the Labour Party has become, and the weakness of it’s prominent spokespeople.

Rosie51 Wed 06-Apr-22 23:47:12

On 26th January 2022 Scotland (in line with some other countries) brought in sentencing guidelines for under 25s, based on worldwide scientific research, because the brain is not fully developed before then. Yet we think children are 'brain developed' enough to make decisions and take medications that have irreversible effects on their growing bodies.

I struggle to understand how a 2 year old could be so cognisant about the differences between boys and girls to want to be the other. Surely children of that age are still very much 'gender neutral' without outside influences? I'm glad it's worked out for the child you know. Children have all sorts of ideas about what they want to be. My 4 year old niece really, really wanted to be a horse and would frolic around and neigh, but we didn't affirm she was one. In her nativity play at nursery school they wanted her to be Mary, she insisted she'd be the donkey since there was no horse character. Puberty can be pretty awful for anyone. My grandson with severe autism and learning difficulties is finding puberty extremely distressing.

Agree with everything that you’ve said snowberry.
