How the tide can turn eh?

That's pretty impressive for a 'Tory' chancellor. Less popular than a useless, kneeling, Labour leader. We He's had some pretty stiff competition from his own party too.

Indeed - turns out his wife as a non dom pays no or very little tax at all - despite all her wealth/ & 3 houses in the UK , she has no intentions to stay here. Wow- something is rotten in the woodpile and stinks / they take us all for fools

Must admit the “greased piglet” description made me giggle!
Oink.

What Mrs Sunak is doing is legal though it's not a good look for Rishi. The scandal is that these complex taxation rules are allowed to continue. Reform is long overdue but unlikely to happen any time soon.

Rishi annoys me with his ostentatious wealth. He has been photographed recently wearing trainers costing over £300. A couple of years ago he he was photographed with a "smart" heated coffee mug that cost nearly £200 and keeps his coffee at the right temperature for a couple of hours. OK, we get it - Rishi's a rich guy. Maybe he has a gold-plated lavvy seat - fine but I don't want to know about it.

Rishi's fall from grace now must be manna from heaven for Boris as he looks towards the next election.

But how do we know about these trainers and coffee mug? Maybe because the press tell us about it? I certainly would have no idea what things were worth and quite honestly I really couldn't care less. I just think they've got more money than sense but I don't envy them, denigrate them, etc.
What I think is sad on this thread is that if you happen to disagree with the naysayers, you are accused of not having a moral compass. Having a different point of view does not mean you are immoral.

The Tory mindset.

Although it is silly rhetoric to call it a moral duty I can't see anyway you can deal with tax than assuming people will legally pay as little as they can. Just look at the attractions of ISAs.

For me two things arise from this latest mess. Firstly, the Inland Revenue need to be following up on people using legal loopholes such as Non Dom status, not relying on people to tell you when they have changed their minds.

Secondly, we need a clean sweep of all tax avoidance laws. We can then start with a clean sheet that gives equality of taxation between earned and unearned income.

We don’t know if she pays tax in India. But apparently her dividends are paid to her account in Mauritius which does not tax dividends. The point is she chooses tax avoidance in this country while being married to the British Chancellor and residing in public provided Downing Street

I daresay I miss a lot but I don't think I've noticed particular signs of ruthlessness in Rishi Sunak.

All wealth is relative. Because he has (even) more than other other members of his party doesn't mean he is an (even) less worthy person.

I don't recall him being prominent among the far right Brexit group, and if he shipped his business interests offshore that too passed me by.

Most of us take what steps we can (within the law) to avoid paying more tax than we need. There may even be people contributing to this very thread who have so arranged their affairs as to pay the minimum in inheritance tax. In fact my DH would be among them.

Who would people like to see replace RS?

growstuff Fri 08-Apr-22 17:54:13

I think callousness or (if I'm being kind) indifference would be better words than ruthlessness. And if you've missed those, I dare say you do miss a lot.

I think this has a strong element if truth about it.

Sunak is the author of his own misfortune by being v Thatcherite and v bad at politics, but once again we see who’s good at it: the greased piglet in No 10. He is utterly ruthless and will take down anyone in his way. Prepare for sudden mysterious bad headlines about Liz Truss.

Yep!

I’m wondering if some of this is being instigated by some Conservatives themselves as part of Operation save big dog given that Sunak was becoming a danger to Johnson?

Like what I said. There’s something decidedly fishy smelling about what’s going on…

They're all rotten to the core

I thought there were a few decent people still left in the Conservative party. Having said that, if they were that decent they would put country before party. What happened to all the letters calling for a vote of no confidence in Johnson?

What Mrs Sunak has done is questionably 'legal'.

Rishi's fall from grace now must be manna from heaven for Boris as he looks towards the next election.

The longer Johnson is PM the greater the chance of the tories very comprehensively losing the next General Election. His incompetence, blatant freeloading, contempt for the law, even if made by him (partygate) and his consistent outright lying has thoroughly peed off an awful lot of voters.

"Yep" too - and I love the greased piglet.

Correction: I love the phrase "greased piglet".

I see Mrs Sunak is giving up her non dom status.

Over to you Johnson.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 08-Apr-22 19:22:12

Johnson denies he has nothing to do with it.

Of course we all believe someone who constantly lies.

No I was wrong. She isn’t giving up her non dom status. She has simply announced that she will pay tax on her foreign earnings.

As most of her foreign earnings will be going into a trust, this won’t be much.

Mrs Sunak pays tax on her Indian earnings in India - and on her UK earnings in the UK. She is doing nothing wrong - nobody pays more tax than they need to if they can help it. I understand she would likely be a British citizen if India allowed dual citizenship like we do, but she clearly does not wish to renounce her Indian citizenship which would be her only choice.

This story is not new - Private Eye covered it around a year ago, its just the usual suspects dredging it up trying to have a dig at Rishi by attacking his wife. The usual fake allegations of sleaze from the opposition - no surprise given the forthcoming May elections. She is not the Chancellor and is doing nothing illegal. Not a massive fan of Rishi but his personal fortune is self made - his parents were a pharmacist and a GP respectively, so he doesn't exactly come from money.

I dislike the stench of the politics of envy when it comes to wealthy politicians - by all means criticise his policies but its not a crime to be wealthy, much as I am sure some on here would like it to be.

growstuff Fri 08-Apr-22 22:25:14

Where's your evidence that the sleaze is coming from the opposition? The longer it goes on, the more it looks like it's coming from inside the Conservative Party.
