Johnson and Sunak to be served fixed penalty notices. Will he still maintain he didn't break the law?

GillT57 Wed 13-Apr-22 11:36:39

It has been pointed out by commentators that Johnson was looking a bit less ebullient than usual yesterday and was reading from a script, presumably put together by his lawyers. If I was Sunak, I would stick it to Johnson and resign, saying that I apologised for being involved in a small birthday celebration, and that I was no longer able to remain part of this dishonest administration. Note, I am not a fan of Sunak, but I am happy to see him bring Johnson down. Grant Schapps or whatever his name is, was pathetic on R4 this morning, if it wasn't so serious it would be laughable. As for Fabricant, are there any GN members who are from his constituency? How do you feel? Proud or repelled?

maddyone Wed 13-Apr-22 11:52:14

Sunak should resign for a completely different reason than partygate.

Larsonsmum Wed 13-Apr-22 11:54:23

I think this particular event the Metropolitan Police have issues fines to Boris, Rishi & others for attending is the least relevant get-together which went on at Downing Street.

This definitely appears to have been a small gathering of staff, with a surprise birthday cake, which Boris unknowingly walked into.

However, it is events and ‘parties’ the police are still investigating which might be the eventual downfall of the Prime Minister.

Love it!

Was there a law brought in that colleagues were not to sit in their office grounds together after or during work? Was it law that a person could not sit in their own garden/ office grounds during and after work? This is all the usual nonsense brought by leftie remainers. The police are a disgrace. The uncivil servants are jackals. Boris chaired eight meetings that day- weeks after he nearly died and a pregnant wife/ newborn baby. This is distraction and deflection.

Beanie654321 Wed 13-Apr-22 12:08:31

My understanding is you cannot hold office with a criminal record, well they have them so it should mean they resign. No more lies. He's mortified at getting caught and not about doing it. I for one will never forgive this government, because I could not travel to say good bye to my dear sister as she lay on her death bed, whilst Boris and friends were partying. Absolute disgrace the lot if them, whilst the rest of us pay the price.

So, he had a birthday party, so what?! They were all working with each other, every day, so they knew they were probably safe with each other, not spreading Covid. Or if they were spreading it, then only with each other. These poor people who lost loved ones in care homes all alone ( except for the staff) if they had gone dashing all over the country to see their loved ones in care homes or hospitals, they would have caused mayhem and spread it all over, endangering a whole lot of other people.
I bet there are a lot of people, who had to go to work and see the same people every single day, knowing they were 'safe' had the odd party , to relieve the tension and have something different happen.
I'm fed up with 'partygate', there are far bigger and more important issues, and it seems to me, the media have got themselves in a frenzy about this and someone is trying very hard to topple the government.

maddyone Wed 13-Apr-22 12:10:19

Frankly I couldn’t care less. There are more important things going on in the world. I realise this will be an unpopular view on Gransnet but there it is.

Jane43 Wed 13-Apr-22 12:10:29

Of course I object to the blatant disregard of rules regarding parties but I object much more to the fact that on his watch so much money was thrown at friends and business acquaintances supposedly for managing Covid, not to mention the obscene amounts of money given to already very wealthy people in the name of furlough payments. Then there is the huge amount of fraud during Covid which has been let go whilst the Universal Credit boost has been grabbed away when it is needed most. No wonder his PR machine is working overtime.

Philippa111 Wed 13-Apr-22 12:16:14

I loved your comment Esspee. I don't think anyone will be going anywhere, any time soon...unless removed by force. All these guys are interested in is power (and privilege) and they will hang on till the bitter end rather than relinquish that! They couldn't care less about a few little silly rules they broke... they'll wriggle out and duck and dive to maintain their positions and I'm pretty sure J is now focusing on looking good re Ukraine because that suits him as it takes the focus off his law breaking. Sorry to say but these types don't live by the same morals as most of us but just manipulate situations to suit, so as to maintain their power.

Treetops05 Wed 13-Apr-22 12:17:08

I'm sure Sunak will really feel the loss of £50.

Brownowl564 Wed 13-Apr-22 12:19:13

For gods sake, Someone brought in a cake for his birthday, against the rules but not a big deal, they have been fined, no more serious than a parking ticket, get over it, Starmer has lied through his teeth about his beer and pizza with 20 colleagues, apparently the police must consider it not a party without cake.
Putin is laughing his socks off at this pathetic witch hunt.

If the rules apply to Boris Johnson and all the others at the 10 minute party then every single person who went to the beach, a park ,,protested etc should all be fined , most of whom are the ones creating a mountain out of a molehill with laughable indignation

AngieP Wed 13-Apr-22 12:22:59

I really don't care, it was over 12 months ago. I feel the government and opposition should be concentrating on the issues affecting the country now.

123kitty Wed 13-Apr-22 12:24:02

Well said katiemay.

The real issue is the illegal lockdowns and the enforced jabs not that Boris broke a rule. The real issue is the dead in care homes and the forced jab injured and how if you went to hospital you would catch Covid- so minging are those places and so lazy the staff. But way to go deflecting with this mince.

Oh my goodness me ! Illegal lockdowns ? Forced jabs ? April 1st was 12 days ago surely

Is that you Nadine? Haven't you got something better to do, maybe chew on a kangaroo anus or something?

GillT57 Wed 13-Apr-22 12:33:22

Crikey, someone has sent up a distress flare and called the deluded faithful out to defend the indefensible. I am happy to read and discuss opinions, but some of this is complete and utter nonsense.

sundowngirl Wed 13-Apr-22 12:34:13

Katiemay and Brownowl564 - at last the voices of reason! I couldn't agree more. These people were working together, if they had a piece of cake or a drink - so what. It certainly wasn't what I would call a party. I can't believe that so many contributors on here are up in arms about this when there is an energy crisis, cost of living crisis, the war in Ukraine etc etc to worry about. The rest of the world must be laughing at us making such a big deal over a minor gathering 2 years ago

GillT57 Wed 13-Apr-22 12:34:50

*Stsrmer has lied through his teeth about his beer and pizza with 20 colleagues*
No. He hasn’t,

be happy Lucca, stupid and ill informed comments like this show that the deluded ones are getting desperate. We will have a post about Corbyn attending a funeral for a terrorist soon. Fools

Yammy Wed 13-Apr-22 12:35:24

He, Boris has only proved what we all knew he was. He knows what he should do but will not. There's nothing any of us can do until the next election if the Conservative party have not already done it by then.
Worldwide issues are more important than a liar who wants his cake and eat it when he had told others not to.

maddyone Wed 13-Apr-22 12:35:53

How do we know whether Starmer has lied or not? I saw the photo of him but it was grainy and I don’t know whether it was a ‘party’ or ‘after work drinks’ because I wasn’t there. I wasn’t present at a BJ’s ‘party’ either. I don’t care about either of them, they were in their workplaces and mixing with people who they worked with every day.

volver Wed 13-Apr-22 12:37:31

I don't understand why people don't care that we've got a liar and cheat in charge of the country. Even if he had done well with Ukraine and all the other things that are held up in his defence - how far would he have to go to have some people say they don't support him any more?

He broke the law. It doesn't matter if other people did as well, he broke the law. So did Sunak. And it was a law we were told was in place to stop people dying, so the "only like a parking fine" defence doesn't hold up. Then they both lied about it to us and to Parliament.

Its the first time a sitting PM has been found guilty of breaking the law. He has done things that other PMs have resigned for without even trying to wriggle out of it. And yet the defence of "there's nobody else" still gets repeated and repeated.

I have no time for Gove, or Truss or any of the rest of them, but the man in post at the moment is not a fit person to hold the post. That's not my thoughts, its the rules of Parliament which he is just ignoring. How did we get here?
