Just imagine you started a new job and that lot were the gang in the office!
Grant Shapps always makes me think of Linus from the Peanuts cartoons.

Listening to the closing interview on Today they seem to think nothing will happen until after the May Local Elections.
The suggestion was that, if Johnson is defenestrated, the next PM could not be from the current Cabinet as they are now all tarred with backing Johnson. Hunt name was the only one they could suggest.
What are your thoughts? I can't see how, if he goes, the government can continue but I do understand I have an underlying bias.

Argh JaneJudge! Another pair of trousers I refuse to zoom in on!
Not Jeremy Hunt, he's far too nice, and would be a useless push over and capitulate without a struggle when confronted with the EU, Putin, or any politician you can think of. Politics worldwide is such a dirty game these days that niceness, integrity or any such attributes are pretty well obsolete in today's world. Sad but true. In any case I don't think Jeremy Hunt would want it, the palpable look of relief when Boris won the leadership contest was more than obvious, and I doubt it's changed.
Sorry Casdon I meant Arggh to your post, not JaneJudge's

Tom Tugendhat. Putting country before party I think he’s a big threat to Labour winning the next election but, for the sake of the country he’s what we need.
I am and never have been a Tory supporter. I really do believe they need a period out of office in order to clean out the rot caused by Johnson and his flying monkeys.
I've written elsewhere about why Johnson surrounds himself with weak cabinet members. Why has Tom Tugendhat not been offered a cabinet position? Because he's been sanctioned by China? Because he's pro-EU? Because he might actually be a threat to Johnson? If we are stuck with the Tories in power for a few more years I'd like to see him in a prominent role. If Ukraine is being cited as the reason not to destabilise the government, I can't think of anyone better. Someone with a firm grasp of foreign affairs and military engagement.
I disagree about Hunt. He seems to pick and choose about when he does or doesn’t criticise Johnson.. I think he’s playing the long game. And even the seemingly good decent Conservative MP’s still have a pretty vile voting record when it comes to the poorer and more vulnerable members of society.

I honestly don't know. Im seriously considering giving up politics and voting altogether. I have never been so disillusioned with the shower I have in my own country ( Scotland), and with UK government. Before anyone begins jumping on me, I have voted in every single election since I was 18 years old. Im now late 50s, but you know what, they are all the same and it doesn't matter the party.
I could have written that post. I’m done with all of them.
I was with friends yesterday and we were discussing how to form a whole new way of governing/ running the country.
I’d like to see a Danish-style multi-party system where smaller parties have much more significance. No single party has held an absolute majority in the Folketing since the beginning of the 20th century. Government bills rarely become law without negotiations and compromise with both supporting and opposition parties.

The TV series Borgen is an excellent drama which shows how this works, especially series 3.

Denmark is a true democracy, as are all the other European countries except for the two which elect majority governments supported by a minority of voters, using FPTP - UK and Belarus.
I would like Theresa May back if we have to have a Tory PM that is. I don't she had a fair crack of the whip as it was overshadowed by Brexit.
Theresa May had integrity but seemed totally unable to delegate. Whatever anyone might say about the present Cabinet, they are all allowed to, and do, speak on all manner of issues not just those in their particular remit. TM lost her position by being so autocratic and using hopeless advisers.
I do remember Teresa May employing a bumbling, lying incompetent as foreign secretary at one point, so you must be right GSM.

I'm another who is all for PR. I'm sorry to repeat what I have said elsewhere but the two larger parties are perpetual coalitions. Their smaller entities rarely agree about anything except that they want to be in power.
I think we should be able to choose what parties make up our coalitions and not be limited in this way.
Nick??????
Tom Tugendhat is now 2nd favorite to replace Johnson if there was a leadership election.
A former soldier, with little time for culture wars, he would be one of the few capable, sane & decent Tory MPs who could command the support of the house at this time.

I do think he is a man of integrity, but is it ok to have a PM with dual nationality French/British after the debacle of the last couple of weeks regarding green cards and non-dom spouses?
I would feel happier if he relinquished his French Nationality, then we could be assured that he would put the U.K. first and foremost.
He doesn't look as if he has held any ministerial offices WWM. That may, of course, be a good thing.
The latest from Sky News:
Mr Sunak is now at 12/1 to replace the PM, falling from recent odds of 3/1.
In contrast, Foreign Secretary Ms Truss has shot ahead at 11/2.
Meanwhile, Mr Johnson is at 5/2 to step down as PM this year - and 16/5 to resign by the end of 2023.

There was a vote, during the 2010 coalition, to change our voting system.
The majority voted to leave it as it was.
"The decision by the people who voted was a decisive "No" vote to adopting the alternative vote system in future United Kingdom general elections by a majority of 6,860,516 votes over those who had voted "Yes" in favor of the proposal."
Not much chance of changing it.
Jeremy Hunt is probably the only worthwhile candidate although he was a dreadful Health Minister. Truss and Doris are appalling. Doris spends all her time smirking at Johnson and Truss is trying too hard to be Mrs Thatch. I have heard it said that Gove is still the only really reliable Minister and he gets things done. He’s a back stabber though and I assume is still getting used to his new ‘lifestyle’.

No point in going into the detail but no referendum is final. I do wonder where that idea comes from.

So what you’re saying Allsorts is that thePM has surrounded himself with incompetents, and there are no other Tory MPs who are up to the job either. I’d consider changing my vote if I felt as despairing.
