Who next for PM?

Listening to the closing interview on Today they seem to think nothing will happen until after the May Local Elections.

The suggestion was that, if Johnson is defenestrated, the next PM could not be from the current Cabinet as they are now all tarred with backing Johnson. Hunt name was the only one they could suggest.

What are your thoughts? I can't see how, if he goes, the government can continue but I do understand I have an underlying bias.

Allsorts

There’s no one else up to it, simple as that.

Why is Tugendhat any "less up to it" than Johnson?

BlueBelle Wed 13-Apr-22 16:10:28

If Truss gets it I m emigrating to Denmark

I wish I could ... or anywhere.

Is there not something fundamentally wrong with a system that allows a few hundred Tory MPs, elected by an undemocratic FPTP voting system to chose our PM?

maddyone Wed 13-Apr-22 18:45:48

Frankly, I have absolutely no idea.

I'm not sure I'm with you on that varian. The PM is meant to be a first among equals (to quote a certain novelist) but since Blair they have started to behave like presidents. Now we get people saying they are voting for Boris when they are doing no such thing. The Tories can can choose who they like to lead the party, and they can change who that is any time they like.

If Truss or Dorries get the job im going with Bluebelle!!
An outsider choice...always seems competent in interviews...Tobias Ellwood.

maddy47 Wed 13-Apr-22 18:56:33

So sorry Rory Stewart left the stage.

It concerns me that many people don’t appear to understand that they are voting for whoever is standing in their area, and unless they happen to live in the party leader’s constituency, they cannot vote for the leader of any particular party.

JaneJudge Wed 13-Apr-22 19:04:17

and Nadine Dories doesn't even live in her constituency

But volver you have the advantage of living in Scotland where the electoral system for the Scottish Parliament is more, (although not perfectly) proportional.

The UK parliament is elected by a minority of voters giving an obscene majority of MPs and they impose whatever they like on us, and whoever they chose as their leader until the next election.

None of this would ever happen in a democratic country.

True varian, but the SNP could come on TV tomorrow and tell us there has been a leadership contest and Humza Yousaf was FM now, and there's nothing to prevent them doing that, that's allowed.

maddyone Wed 13-Apr-22 19:45:22

I don’t think we live in a truly democratic country. FPTP can never be truly democratic.

Blossoming Wed 13-Apr-22 20:37:00

Larry the Cat would doa better job.

Curlywhirly Wed 13-Apr-22 20:44:42

I don't think any Tories need to worry about Nadine Dorries being elected as PM, never in a month of Sundays, she's hardly the sharpest tool in the box (and that's being polite!). .

Is there anyone? Please not Gove.

MaizieD Wed 13-Apr-22 23:04:20

It doesn't have to be an MP; it could be a peer. They just have to be a member of Parliament to be PM. (i.e, Commons and Lords)

How about Botham? Or Lebedev? Or that woman who used to be a communist and supported the IRA, Claire Fox.. grin

Jacob?

How about Gavin Williamson! We’re so spoilt for choice aren’t we.

Do you mean Rees Mogg? I think not. The man shot himself in the foot on 29 June 2021 by stating in his own podcast TheMoggcast that “The PM is unquestionably an honest man”. You can listen here, about 12 minutes in:

Totally agree with youmaddy47

Looking it up on the web, it seems the PM doesn’t have to be an MP.
I don’t know if this true though

The PM has to be a member of Parliament. Parliament is the House of Commons and the House of Lords. By convention it is a member of the Commons. I seem to recall Lord Home giving up his peerage when he became PM, though. Late 1950s, early 1960s.
