Just that really.

Serves the mealy-mouthed hypocrite right.

On another thread I mentioned lots of people who caught covid while lavishing praise on facemasks and their so-called effectiveness. Here's one of them. Not once, but twice

I don't agree. Democracy can be exercised at the next GE.

But are you sure? One of the worst things about living in this time is that we have seen Trump and we have seen Putin. All the things we thought had been locked away seem to be escaping and I see much of it in Johnson.

Even Kenneth Clark is saying Johnson is becoming dictator like.

Not sure why you say ‘even’ MayBee70*, Ken Clarke has always been a sensible man. I don’t agree with his politics, but I’ve always respected his opinion, he doesn’t suffer fools.

I didn’t mean it that way. Had he not been planning to retire anyway he wouldn’t have served under Johnson. Nor would Rory Stewart, Anna Soubry or Dominic Grieve. What I don’t understand is we have a Conservative government that is stripping away all the things that I always thought Conservative voters (and people who hold conservative with a small c views) hold dear. It perplexes me.

The 16-strong executive of Wakefield constituency Labour party (CLP) has resigned en masse, accusing Keir Starmer of stitching up the selection of a candidate for the forthcoming byelection.

Urmstongran Sat 14-May-22 06:50:48

Wakefield was on the news last night. That red wall voted to Brexit. Keir Starmer wanted to parachute in two Remainer candidates! I don’t blame them for not complying. Who needs a voice in Parliament at odds with the locals on this?

Urmstongran Sat 14-May-22 07:07:07

Just looked it up. Wakefield voted 2/3rds in favour of Brexit so this was just a slap in the face to them. Shows what Keir Starmer would do if he was ever PM.

“Local Party members should select their candidates for every election." Keir Starmer Feb 2020

Ha! - a man of integrity?
I think not.

Galaxy Sat 14-May-22 07:21:39

The row is not to do with Brexit.

Urmstongran Sat 14-May-22 07:23:41

Remainers always say that.

volver Sat 14-May-22 07:30:08

I googled "remainer candidates Wakefield".

Telegraph.

Urmstongran Sat 14-May-22 07:37:52

Not so. Sorry to spoil your narrative.

Galaxy Sat 14-May-22 07:38:40

Even that article tells you what is really going on. Its centre v left urmstongran, like clp s up and down the country.

I think it may be UG's 'bible' volver. In the way fundementalist Christians believe the literal meaning of the Bible, such people take the words of the Daily Telegraph as being the true voice of God (who for Telegraphists is probably called Boris).

Whitewavemark2 Sat 14-May-22 07:49:23

I very much suspect that people in Wakefield have much more to worry about than if the candidate is a remainer or brexiter.

For many it will be where the next meal is coming from or how to afford the children’s new shoes.

I googled "remainer candidates Wakefield".

Telegraph.

The article even includes the word "parachute". What a coincidence.

Luckygirl3 Sat 14-May-22 08:42:40

Keir Starmer would be better than what we now have - in fact just anyone would.

The 16-strong executive of Wakefield constituency Labour party (CLP) has resigned en masse, accusing Keir Starmer of stitching up the selection of a candidate for the forthcoming byelection.

This is normal practice in the Tory party, here a well known local candidate was sidelined and a “national” candidate was parachuted into this safe seat. Many reasons for this often balancing sex and ethnic mix of the party.

Iam64 Sat 14-May-22 09:19:53

It has nothing to do with Brexit. A huge problem is the activists in CLPs are like the union bosses of old. They done necessarily represent the views of the majority membership but have loud voices
Our cLP is heading for a similar row.

Galaxy Sat 14-May-22 09:48:52

Our CLP has been in constant 'row' mode for months, to be honest of it was simply about Brexit it would be less divisive.

DiamondLily Sat 14-May-22 09:54:39

It seems the Tories are trying to talk Lord Frost, into "freezing" his peerage, so that they can name him as their candidate..

He has no connection with the area either, the Tories want him there simply because he's a Brexiteer.

Looks like both sides are trying to parachute candidates in.

Viscount Stansgate renounced his peerage altogether to become an MP. I thought that was how it worked..

On April 3rd, this photo appeared on the front pages of many Sunday newspapers. David Warburton, the Conservative MP for Somerton and Frome, looking spaced out beside what appear to be lines of cocaine. Texts from him had asked "does your dealer do Westminster Bridge?" and commented on the price of £160. He had also been accused of sexual harrassment by three different women. Lurid details were supplied. And he was found to have borrowed a large sum of money from a Russian businessman who had been banned from any kind of regulated financial activity.

His constituents expected him to resign and trigger a byelection. He has not done so. He was expelled from the Parliamentary Conservative Group - ie he had the whip withdrawn but is still apparently a member of the Conservative Party. He issued a statement saying he had been admitted to a psychiatric clinic suffering from "shock" (we can only assume he was shocked at being found out)

On 6th May he issued an update, assuring constituents that he was continuing to represent them as before and telling them " As it happens and since the stories appeared a month ago, I have still not been contacted by any authority and am currently unaware as to whether any investigation has, in fact, been established."

www.davidwarburton.org.uk/news/update-statement-david-warburton-mp

Are we to believe that neither the parliamentary authorities nor the police intend to question him? If so, what on earth does a Tory MP have to do to warrant investigation?

varian Sat 14-May-22 11:18:12

There is also an allegation (which may or may not be true) that Johnson seems to be paying off his friends in the media to push his agenda and cover up/suppress anything not conducive to his government. Is this why we have seen absolutely no further reports or comments about David Wartburton since 3rd April?

Love Labour’s Lost: How Labour Lost 200,000 Members Under Starmer (Critical Mass Exclusive Poll)

As I went through the reasons for leaving given by those responding to my tweet, I began to compile a list. It turned out that quite a variety of reasons came into play – though these were also weighted towards a select few.

Want to know the top 5?

They were:

? Bullying of members and attacks on party democracy

? The party’s treatment of Corbyn and the Left

? Starmer’s support for apartheid Israel and the right-wing Jewish group, the Board of Deputies

? ‘Labour no longer represents us’

? Starmer is a liar / can’t be trusted

Want to know the winner – the reason most frequently given by the thousand Labour leavers who responded?

It’s this:

? ‘Labour no longer represents us’

Well, Corbyn supposedly represented them and yet they voted Conservative at the last election. How can you explain that?

You said it for me Maybee ?

They still don't get it.

Anniebach Sun 15-May-22 14:41:53

The results of the 2019 general election were the worse for
Labour since the 30’s, what happened to all the Corbynites then

Iam64 Sun 15-May-22 15:40:43

They really don’t get it.
The not so thinly veiled anti semitism is ever present amongst the very people who denied the problem
And - it was mentioned frequently by former labour voters in this red wall seat, along with “I’ll never vote labour with yon mon in charge”. Patriotism snd defence key along with general dislike and mistrust of Corbyn and his allies

They dont want a labour government
