Nationalism the fashionable form of government

We have a nationalist government newly elected in NI

We have had nationalism in Scotland for years.

We have a nationalist PM in Westminster following a populist agenda.

Wales seems to be the only outrider.

Nationalism was always thought to be a concept if government that should be avoided.

What happened?

Serious question volver if/when Scotland votes to leave the Union do you think it will also decide to no longer have the monarchy?

volver Tue 10-May-22 14:42:42

No. I think we will/would keep the monarchy.

Thank you, I was uncertain as to their popularity in Scotland.

Yet, as in no one has left yet so obviously there’s a queue of absolutely no one.

I feel for the people of Scotland that don’t wish to leave the union. As for the hatred we know which way it flows.

The sooner England votes to have its own parliament the better. I don’t know why this wasn’t an option when devolution was set up.
PS Scotland isn’t a colony.

Yes we do tickingbird. Yes we do.

Some of the things that have been said about Scotland on threads like this one would have been deleted if they had been said about Black people, Jews, or even the English. I had a post deleted for suggesting that someone who was not affected by anything the Scottish Government does seemed to be irrationally annoyed by it.

Yet again - we do not hate the English! Some of us even have English blood, shock horror!

paddyann54 Tue 10-May-22 15:41:30

Tickingbird we very clearly saw where the hatred flows from on the day after the referendum in 2014 .When unionists disrupted a peaceful gathering in George Square, burnt Saltires terrorised young women and trashed the square.
All good upstanding citizens of the union ...I suppose you would say .Wonder if Lizzie was proud of them and PURRED at their vile behaviour ? Now we have an e grand master of the OO in the Labour party ...so we know where the next vile behaviour will come from.Anas Sarwar ...trying to turn Scotland into NI .
For the record ,there has never been any trouble or arrests at any Independence march in all the years I've been marching ,they may be noisy ,and usually fun filled but theres no hatred and no fighting ,Unlike the union loving OO.
If you dont believe me check Police Scotland records

A wee list for you, tickingbird, of some of the 62 nations who have gained independence from the British Empire/UK,

The Gambia, US of A, Canada, Australia, Barbados, Botswana, Cyprus, Brunel, Egypt....
None of them have begged to return.

Aveline Tue 10-May-22 16:17:50

Happy to remain in the Commonwealth though

volver Tue 10-May-22 16:18:46

And...?

happycatholicwife1 Tue 10-May-22 16:21:38

You get a yes vote from here in the USA.

tickingbird Tue 10-May-22 17:10:32

Maremia. The Commonwealth isn’t The United Kingdom.

Anyone would think the English care. It’s the people in Scotland that don’t wish to leave the union I feel for. The average Joe in the street in England isn’t bothered one way or the other

Callistemon21 Tue 10-May-22 17:13:02

I very much doubt it, paddyann. I expect, like most of us, she was horrified and appalled at the violence.

However, the assumption that she or we might be delighted by it does tend to annoy people in other parts of the UK. We're not.
We can't help it if the Scots are intent on infighting.

^Get rid of Scotland...^

Does anybody really wonder why some of us want to leave the UK?

It a plain reflection of what many Scots think of the Sassenachs.

volver Tue 10-May-22 17:17:38

I am under no illusions that there are English people on here who don't care. And we don't care that they don't care. Do you care that we don't care whether you care? smile

All those poor people you feel sorry for? They have a vote. And I'm sure they'll use it. Just like they've used it in all the recent elections we've had where the SNP/Greens just keep on winning, as if by magic.

One thing that is more irritating than an English person telling us what to do, is one telling us how sorry they are for us grin.

Careful. That chip on your shoulder will unbalance you.

tickingbird Tue 10-May-22 17:25:42

Volver. I’ve irritated you? Too bad smile

MaizieD Tue 10-May-22 17:27:17

if Scotland costs so much to keep, why doesn't Westminster just let them go?

There's apparently a good case to be made for saying that Scotland doesn't 'cost so much to keep'. There are few accurate figures kept on the flows of Scottish income and expenditure, so much of it is guess work, with sometimes some very odd allocations of cost. I'm sure that critiques can be found somewhere...

volver Tue 10-May-22 17:27:32

GN. It's such a friendly, supportive place isn't it?

confused

America was a collection of colonies which gained independence in 1776

Australia wasn't ever a country that gained independence from the Empire- it was a collection of states and territories which were granted independence and some of the states became the nation of Australia in 1901. Britain granted more autonomy in 1931 but Australia didn't accept this fully until after WW2.

Happy to remain in the Commonwealth though
With a couple of exceptions - but it did start off with 7 members and now has 54.
Yes, and more countries which werent part of an old-fashioned Empire are applying to join.

Funny, that ?

volver Tue 10-May-22 17:31:57

Here's the thing.

If/when we get independence all bets are off. We start from ground zero. GERS is irrelevant. We don't send any money to rUK, and rUK doesn't send any money to us. We have to build our own economy. Just like every other country in the world does.

So anybody who wants to tell me how we're not up to the job, we're really not interested. Go and tell Iceland they'd best reunite with Denmark because they'll never make it alone. See where that gets you. grin

What will you do when you lose the next referendum as well?

Yes, and more countries which weren't part of an old-fashioned Empire are applying to join.

But they are not applying to give up their own parliaments, are they?

Get very drunk and stay in bed. Like the last time.
