Why is Johnson more popular than Starmer?

It's a simple question and you could answer it purely on political lines but I think there is more to it than that. I think somehow Johnson appeals to those who like bad boys and the slight amorality which is present in so many lives now, whereas Starmer always comes across as the typical lawyer, and no one trusts a lawyer. Any other ideas?

Galaxy

He isn't.
Also Johnson isnt a bad boy he is a very damaged man.

Oh are you a qualified medical practitioner, what an insulting ridiculous thing to say. I bet you benefited from all the good things he did. Have you had all your jabs and if you were a worker or had a small business did you benefit from the furlough scheme etc, I bet you know someone who did

I've had my three jabs because NHS workers and volunteers worked their socks off and (after a few hiccoughs) local people organised the roll out well.

No, I didn't benefit from furlough. I was one of the three million self-employed who weren't eligible for anything - not a single penny! Sunak and Johnson knew because there was lobbying and a petition presented to Downing Street, but they didn't care.

I'm fairly sure that Starmer does think women exist. Johnson, on the other hand, seems to think they're disposable playthings.

Of course they don't care about you growstuff

You're obviously not a tax dodging billionaire Tory donor. Why should they care about you?

OakDryad...... I wondered what the hell 'cognitive dissonance' meant so I Googled it - got the exact same answer as you did.

I cannot stand Boris and would never vote him in. I say this as a person who is not loyal to any particular political party, but someone who will vote for whoever I think will do best for their country, It is often very hard to choose. I would not vote for Boris because he is disloyal and dishonest in his personal and political life. I simply do not trust him. Sir Kier Starmer does not come across like that.
However, perhaps Boris carefully plays to the gallery and is good at courting popularity. He knows how to brush off negative publicity and perhaps his fallibility is part of the appeal.

katy1950 Wed 25-May-22 19:16:31

Because starmer is a weak fence sitter . The labour party is a woke party without any viable policies

dolphindaisy Wed 25-May-22 20:05:27

I have my own theory as to l why Johnson is popular, here goes:
A huge proportion of people in this country are not the least bit interested in politics - they find the subject very boring and politicians very boring. There are many words to describe Johnson but boring isn't one of them. You can bet your bottom dollar that if you asked a huge crowd of people to quickly name a politician the first name most of them will give is .....Boris Johnson. Keir Starmer is a decent, honest, hard working MP (everything Boris isn't) but not exciting enough so when it comes to voting many will still vote Johnson.

Lilyflower Wed 25-May-22 20:12:06

Lilyflower Goebbels was a brilliant writer of propaganda and Hitler was a spellbinding orator.

Well, yes, quite, and exactly why I said I was not assessing him as a man or a PM.

I’m not making a moral judgement, just a point about style.

MaizieD Wed 25-May-22 21:13:38

His bon mots are memorable

hmm. Indeed they were. 'tank topped bum boys' and 'piccaninnies with watermelon smiles' are the sort of things that do stick in the memory...

I think Boris did what others failed to do following the EU referendum. Then he did a reasonable job of steering us through the worst of covid. Quite frankly I am sickened by all the in fighting and back biting he has to suffer on a daily basis. I am not jealous of the downing street parties I'm sure they were good for relieving the tension I can only imagine to those with the responsibility of all our lives on their shoulders! I don't believe he should resign.. he is a human being - not a saint.. and who are the others who were involved in these parties.. and who are the tell tales who are now stirring up trouble for colleagues.. seem to me none of them are fit to take over from him !! As for the labour party-- don't get me started.. They should not be led by a man who looks like he is a pale shadow of Tony Blair, an aloof, educated SIR who dresses like a lawyer and smells of money.!

Galaxy Wed 25-May-22 21:51:25

We dont want educated people in power, that would be awfulshock

LovelyLady Wed 25-May-22 21:52:17

Kwest
Charismatic, charismatic our PM no no no!
Keir has a more credible likeable & logical approach.
I just can’t get past someone thinking Boris is charismatic.

Dinahmo Wed 25-May-22 21:52:34

The invective from some of the posters on this topic is astonishing - mainly directed at Keir Starmer.

I am beginning to think that there should be a test before people are allowed to vote. The ignorance from some posters is beyond belief. I leave it to your imaginations as to my thoughts about some of them.

Galaxy Wed 25-May-22 21:55:30

Just as an aside how does one find a man who smells of money, asking for a friend.

Galaxy Wed 25-May-22 22:04:49

Oh and bless you ajswan the answer to your question is no I didnt receive furlough, I was/am a keyworker, so I worked through all but the very first lockdown, whilst Johnson was getting pissed, strangely enough we didnt have any works parties where people were vomiting etc. What idiots we were.

….I was just pondering on how we got to where we are now. And now I know…..

grannygranby Wed 25-May-22 23:03:56

Simple short answer is that BJ seems to show all his frailties which somehow makes us feel safe, that naughty but lovable thing and Keir seems to tick all the boxes but is slightly scared and touch of the victim about him. Seems to do and say what he ought to say scared of making mistakes. It shouldn’t be such playground stuff but…the fearlessness and social confidence of BJ takes him far.

Urmstongran Wed 25-May-22 23:07:42

whilst Johnson was getting pissed,

Got any evidence to back up that allegation Galaxy?
Is this slanderous if not?

Urmstongran Wed 25-May-22 23:09:23

As an aside - isn’t Boris regarded as a ‘lucky General’ by some who work with him? Maybe he’s regarded as some sort of a talisman.

TiggyW Wed 25-May-22 23:22:28

I would have more confidence in Boris Johnson if he learnt to dress himself and comb his hair! He’s a disgrace!
I can’t imagine what other world leaders think of him.
As for his linguistic abilities - he can’t complete a sentence without ‘erm, erm, erm’.
I’d like to see Tobias Ellwood run for PM. He rose in my estimation when he went to the aid of the police officer during the London Bridge terror attack. I don’t know much about him, but he comes over as being really sincere. He’s ex-military so at least he should have some self-discipline (more than you can say for Johnson).

But this isn’t about China. And where did you get the idea that Starmer was ‘born into wealth’ from?

growstuff Thu 26-May-22 01:48:58

No, jeaniebquick, the whole bloody country wasn't flouting lockdown rules. Most of us had too much sense and civic responsibility. What about you? hmm

growstuff Thu 26-May-22 01:50:20

I bet you feel better now you've had that rant!

Lucca Thu 26-May-22 01:56:12

Hmm…better out than in ???
