Just overheard someone say Johnson wants to re-introduce Imperial measurements. Surely not!

Anyone heard this too?

Updated for the 21st century.

Paint is sold in litres. One litre of paint costs 62p. 125ml covers one square metre. A wall is 4 metres long and 3 metres high. How many litres of paint must the painter buy to paint the wall? How much will it cost?’

2 litres and £1.24.

Did it in my head in about 30 seconds. Shall we have one in hex? Might as well.

What if it is the interior wall of a house that is next to the staircase, but above the hall is a room reached from the upstairs landing,

So the wall like a rectangle but with a square removed at upper right and a triangle removed at lower left, leaving the wall to be painted as a polygon with seven sides, would be a bit harder.

But paint only comes in litre quantities so you'd probably still need 2 litres. But you would need a ladder now and more patience. grin

Ixion I have old coins too but none of any great value ……. Yet! The cigar box you keep them in may be worth something.

Metric or imperial, you could do maths, or you could simply Google the area of the wall and read the back of the paint tin for coverage.

What if you slipped off the ladder and spilt some??

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 29-May-22 14:35:41

Indeed. You must have a contingency. Say 10% wastage? Or more if I’m doing it.

Or should that be spilled??

Heading all you grammarians off at the pass here.

Pedants take Sundays off. ?

Grammar pedant alert!

“What if..” takes the subjunctive, so it should be ‘what if you slip of the ladder and spill some?’.

ixion Sun 29-May-22 14:44:28

"What if you were to slip? " etc.

Paint is sold in litres. One litre of paint costs 62p

It also comes in tester pots which are relatively expensive so I would have to factor in about 6 tester pots too @ £1.50 (30 shillings shock per pot

My pedantry usually comes back to bite me on the backside smile That should be “slip off”, of course.

You have to factor in the cost of a new carpet or flooring.

Callistemon21 Sun 29-May-22 14:49:48

If we go back to £sd then I think a lot of people will be saying "How Much?!!!" ?

ixion Sun 29-May-22 14:50:41

Are there windows? Could I swing curtains into the costings?

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 29-May-22 14:57:33

Possibly new clothes too as you will have ruined them slipping off the ladder with a tin of paint (unless as I recall GagaJo did, you decide to leave the clothes off). And will that slip leave you in need of private medical treatment?

StarDreamer Sun 29-May-22 15:01:50

You could have a recessed area with a half circle top, such that the back of the recess is painted in a second colour and the side walls and curved ceiling of the recess are in a third colour, thereby reducing the amount of paint of the first colour but needing paint of two other colours as well.

Only if you use them dustcloths

Callistemon21 Sun 29-May-22 15:08:54

New fabric costs 15s 11d per yard btw, so take care of your curtains.

15/11d a yard shock. Do you live in a palace?

I wouldn't pay more than 5 bob...

Actually, I think you'd better all just bite the bullet and get a professional decorator in. It would be cheaper grin

Callistemon21 Sun 29-May-22 15:49:30

???

Prices have gone up since 1971

Actually, I'm starting to get quite excited now. Somewhere I have a jar of old pennies and ha'pennies I'll be able to spend. Even two farthings!!
I used to get half a crown pocket money, wonder if that will go up?

ixion Sun 29-May-22 15:58:12

But with such a complex painting requirement as three colours and geometric designs, would someone be up to it?
That Lawrence chappie with the flowing locks and posh surname could. Or the Lulu lady, my friend says she's really good
The cost of paint would be the same, but the work would have to be carried out over 3 separate days.

So instead of 10/-, you're talking 30 bob?

StarDreamer Sun 29-May-22 16:03:06

So what colours?
