Sir Anthony Gormley whose mother was German has just applied to become a German citizen and of course an EU citizen. He tells the truth about brexit. It is time more public figures told the truth about this self afflicted disaster.

There’s this:

Why anyone would think that erecting trade barriers with your closest neighbours and biggest market would leave the U.K. better off beats me, yet that was the big fat lie that was sold. We know that British trade and growth has been hit hard, cost billions and will continue down the pan.

" The leave campaign was built on the delusion that Britain could put up barriers to trade with its closest neighbours and yet become richer as a result. It relied on the likes of maverick economist Patrick Minford, who said a hard Brexit would magic an extra £135bn of annual income for the UK economy. In fact, and entirely predictably, the Office for Budget Responsibility estimates that Brexit has caused an annual loss of some £80bn."

Brexit has cost the UK its technology sovereignty

Hermann Hauser, founder of ARM, notes that:

“China and Europe are the only three “technology sovereignty circles”, with the chip-making factories and 5G knowhow needed for a modern economy. “Britain has no chance of being technologically sovereign,” Hauser says. “Brexit has been the biggest loss of British sovereignty since 1066.”

This is why the vast majority in my industry, software and IT infrastructure, were completely opposed to brexit, regardless of whatever other political views we might have held. We knew the damage that brexit would cause to our ability to innovate. But as brexiters tell us, 100% of all British dog grooming businesses do not export to the EU so who cares?

British wine wholesaler who last year criticised Brexit as the biggest threat to his business in 30 years has decided to leave the UK after post-Brexit paperwork left him with a £150,000 hole in revenue.

Many businesses are leaving Brexitland -who can blame them? U.K. now bottom of the growth league table with only Russia, hit by sanctions, below- meanwhile we have created our own sanctions - madness.

Talking (arguing) last night with another English resident here in France who believes that our economy is doing well, unemployment figures are low and we should all stop criticising the country. Like many people with Tory views he claims not to be a Tory. I must ask him who he fancies for the next leader.

Meanwhile the French just smile benignly and comment about the debates.

This is not a new requirement. It has always been in existence for travellers in the EU from third countries (and that's us now).
The UK has always operated the same sort of 'rules' for non EU travellers

Wasn’t Keir in Germany the other week doing just that? It’s only by having a new government that we can start to build our relationship with the EU. And I’m pretty sure I know who they’d rather deal with.

So many Brexit problems have been pointed out but those that deny the facts are not showing strength, but weakness. The right wing seem to need an enemy for validation and blame anyone else for things going wrong but themselves. Look at the Republicans in the USA, Putin in Russia and the Tories here.

I'd search for it on YouTube but unfortunately I don't know what I'm supposed to be searching for. Can you give us a title?

flump Sun 31-Jul-22 17:06:49

I tried to highlight it but for some reason the 'Truth' bit didn't come up, twice! So, I gave up.

Type Truth to Power. It was posted on the 29th, I think.

MaizieD Sun 31-Jul-22 23:40:42

Thanks. I'll try that.

WWM2 Incredible isn't it. All that fuss about having blue passports.

One day the Brexiteers will wake up, probably after my lifetime so I won't see it happen.

varian Tue 02-Aug-22 18:54:15

It seems to me that having these silly blue passports produced in France was the ultimate in ridiculousness.
