I don't think it matters which one becomes MP as none of them as far as I can see has integrity which for me along with other qualities necessary in a PM is essential.

I’m coming to the conclusion that the best candidate is Truss. She’s so transparently clueless and self serving that the government will fail quicker under her than any of the others. It will be painful for us all, but mercifully short and will guarantee the Tories fade into the wilderness for years. The campaign from the right within the party against Sunak makes me think he is the most capable candidate.

I believe that karmalady might be referring to the £37billion spaffed on the failed Test & Trace during the height of the covid pandemic. Or, perhaps the few £billion handed out to businesses for furlough or support on the basis of fraudulent claims. Or is it the excessive prices paid for useless PPE in contracts awarded to friends, families and tory donors...

Whatever it is, though, this was money 'created' by the Bank of England; not 'borrowed' from anyone and therefore doesn't have to be paid back by anyone, least of all by taxpayers. So karmalady, and anyone else who persists in worrying about this entirely spurious belief, can relax. It's cost us or our descendants nothing at all.

But it does raise the question of , if the government could create £billions to cover these things, and make many of its wealthy supporters even wealthier, why can't it create a £billion or so to invest in the NHS, which is at breaking point?

Reading an article today which I hope has an element of truth in it.

The article argued that the Tory members countrywide, want to see a clean sweep of the government and an entirely new set of faces.

Isn’t going to happen with this lot though.

Can well believe that, Whitewave, but do they mean a GE which their party might not win or do they mean a new set of tory faces?
If the former, Yippee, but if the latter they're crying for the moon. A new PM does need significant experience and common sense and the best (e.g Dominic Grieve, Rory Stuart) were cast out in 2019 so no longer MPs.

That's as may be, but do they not realise that the PLP is dominated by the ERG and all the contenders for the leadership are bent on placating them?

Or does the membership want to see deregulation of food standards, worker's rights, austerity, privatised NHS, more sewage in our waterways, a failing court system, etc. etc.?

And the little matter of the NIP, which the ERG wants to destroy. And further disruption of trade with the EU when the TCA is fully implemented?

I think any attempt to defy the ERG would split the tory party... There's little hope for it, really.

“Lord David Frost, the former Brexit chief negotiator, has told Talk TV he would have "grave reservations" about Penny Mordaunt becoming Prime Minister.

Citing his time working alongside her during the Brexit negotiations, when Mordaunt served as his junior, Lord Frost said she "wasn't fully accountable or always visible".

"To be honest, I'm quite surprised she is where she is in this race. She was my deputy - notionally more than really - in the Brexit talks last year," he said.

"I'm sorry to say this, she did not master the necessary detail in the negotiations last year. She wouldn't always deliver tough messages to the European Union when that was necessary and I'm afraid she wasn't fully accountable or always visible. Sometimes I didn't even know where she was."

"I'm afraid this became such a problem that after 6 months I had to ask the PM to move her on and find somebody else to support me."

Anyone got any idea what Lord Frost has achieved with his Brexit negotiations? Just seems to me that it isn’t much. So for him to attempt to scupper Penny Mordaunts chances is a bit rich. More likely it is an attempt for the far right to put Truss in place. With Nadine and Reese backing the Foreign Secretary she needs all the help she can get.

Also Frost hasn’t been elected and he isn’t an MP having been parachuted into the House of Lords and given a cabinet job by Johnson. Don’t know what he has contributed other than discord in the EU.

I can’t warm to any of them. None have said that the Rwanda plan is a dreadful idea or properly condemned Boris Johnson for his lying or even admitted that the Brexit adventure is a total disaster. All they have to do is appeal to a bunch of Middle England Tory members. This is the first time I’ve thought there should be a GE in cases of a change of leader of the party in power.

The lie about Turkey joining the EU originated from Cummings, he encouraged MPs to repeat the mantra ‘NHS and Turkey’. I’m sure she wasn’t the only one to follow his advice.

That doesn’t make it ok though….and they were all happy to continue to defend Johnson’s lies for 3 years. I’m pretty sure they would have known about the goings on at No 10 as well.

There was a good one liner about Liz Truss on Twitter yesterday - She’d be out of her depth on a damp pavement.

There are a lot of dirty tricks being tried to discredit Mordaunt because she’s an unknown quantity - but surely a known quantity that is incompetent and supported by the people who got us into this mess, Lord Frost included, is much, much worse than an unknown quantity.

It does seem that somebody is briefing against Mordaunt.

The question to ask about Mordaunt is, 'Can she stand up to the ERG'?

Members might favour her for being a 'clean sheet', but they seem oblivious to who is pulling their PLP'Ss strings.

Good! Better than waffling on about immigrants or culture wars! The economy and cost of living is almost certainly what "normal" people are concerned about at the moment.

I really can't warm to Liz Truss, I didn't like her taking credit and making a great issue about securing the trade deals when it only involved changing over from EU trade deal to UK one with minimal negotiation. I thought Rishi was dreadful on Radio 4 yesterday morning, he did the Boris trick of not answering questions and changing the subject to all the great things the British People will be getting if he becomes leader.He also sounds incredibly upper class when he speaks for long - I hadn't noticed that before and that old clip of him saying he had no working class friends has turned up. Tom and Kemi will be out of the race soon. All things considered I think Penny is the least objectionable of the lot.
I'm really concerned all they want to talk about is tax cuts and Brexit, which is not even an issue now.
