In a letter to The Guardian, former UK Ambasssador to Turkey calls out Penny Mordaunt for her persistent lies about Turkey joining the EU.

Lying rules out Braverman and Badenoch too.

Urmstongran Wed 13-Jul-22 22:51:38

Oh dear. Perhaps all this is unravelling now for her?
A messy business.

Galaxy Wed 13-Jul-22 22:53:42

Yep she lies quite a lot.

Casdon Wed 13-Jul-22 22:54:38

The biggest liar has to be Liz Truss. She’s not even good at it.

MayBee70 Wed 13-Jul-22 23:25:04

She makes a point about the fact she was named after a battleship but fails to mention that it was torpedoed by a German submarine and sank with great loss of life. I hope her ambition to be PM sinks without trace, too.

growstuff Wed 13-Jul-22 23:48:34

OK! So that's four out of six are liars! It's not looking too hopeful - at least none of them could be such liars as Johnson.

Anyone who thinks “4” is a word goes down in my opinion.

Are there ANY truthful politicians out there?

25Avalon Thu 14-Jul-22 08:44:00

There are lies, damned lies, and politicians to paraphrase Disraeli’s famous words.

varian Thu 14-Jul-22 08:46:46

Politicians do sometimes say things that are untrue. If they believe what they are saying is true and have no evidence to the contrary, they are not technically lying.

However if they are then told that there is incontrovertible evidence that what they stated is untrue, an honest politician will retract and apologise for getting it wrong.

Penny Mordaunt has been told many times that it is a fact that the UK was, as an EU member, able to veto the admission of Turkey or any other country and therefore her scaremongering statement that "Turkey will join and there is nothing we could do to stop it" is a lie. Yet she keeps repeating this lie.

It seems to me that the reason that she will not withdraw this lie and tell the truth is that it was one of the most important lies which swayed some people to vote Leave.

The whole Brexit project is based on lies but there were two lies that were most effective.

When Dominic Cummings trained the army of call centre workers the Leavers employed to stir up fear, he kept repeating " £350 million and Turkey" , "£350 million and Turkey", "£350 million and Turkey"

"£350 million" was Boris HJohnson's big lie.

"Turkey" was PennyMordaunt's big lie.

A few politicians have the picking of the 2 remaining candidates. A small proportion of the general public, those who have paid to join the tory party, then have the right to vote between those 2. And the majority of the country have to go along with it.
They didn't do to well with the choice of liar Johnson, why does anyone think the country will be any better off by September angry

Urmstongran Thu 14-Jul-22 09:00:20

Oh heck .... this - just now from the Telegraph:

“Lord David Frost, the former Brexit chief negotiator, has told Talk TV he would have "grave reservations" about Penny Mordaunt becoming Prime Minister.

Citing his time working alongside her during the Brexit negotiations, when Mordaunt served as his junior, Lord Frost said she "wasn't fully accountable or always visible".

"To be honest, I'm quite surprised she is where she is in this race. She was my deputy - notionally more than really - in the Brexit talks last year," he said.

"I'm sorry to say this, she did not master the necessary detail in the negotiations last year. She wouldn't always deliver tough messages to the European Union when that was necessary and I'm afraid she wasn't fully accountable or always visible. Sometimes I didn't even know where she was."

"I'm afraid this became such a problem that after 6 months I had to ask the PM to move her on and find somebody else to support me."

"From the basis of what I saw, I would have grave reservations."

Well if the Guardian don't like Penny Mordaunt PM4PM she's gone up in my estimation.

? Liz Truss for PM then, sorry Penny

MaizieD Thu 14-Jul-22 09:05:02

Don't worry, Ug. Frost is so lacking in judgement that no-one with half a brain cell is going to take any notice of what he says.

I expect the ERG would be delighted with a lightweight and easily manipulated PM.

NotSpaghetti Thu 14-Jul-22 09:07:55

Wasn't she the one that made a speech for a bet trying to say "cock" multiple times?
It was years ago...

Urmstongran Thu 14-Jul-22 09:13:11

David Frost is very highly thought of in Tory circles and amongst supporters MaizieD. His revelations will harm Mordant’s chances now. The fact that he asked Boris to remove her (which he did) will add credence to his viewpoint in my opinion.

Casdon Thu 14-Jul-22 09:35:35

I’m coming to the conclusion that the best candidate is Truss. She’s so transparently clueless and self serving that the government will fail quicker under her than any of the others. It will be painful for us all, but mercifully short and will guarantee the Tories fade into the wilderness for years. The campaign from the right within the party against Sunak makes me think he is the most capable candidate.

She’s named after a battleship that was torpedoed by a German submarine which sunk without trace with great loss of life.

There was a subsequent HMS Penelope, Leander class frigate which survived the Falklands war and was sold on to Uruguay, I believe.

I wonder if she was named after that one?

Callistemon21 Thu 14-Jul-22 10:16:52

^I hear her launch went well^:

Continuing the Naval connections ?

I know someone who went to school with RS, what a slime ball he was then and still is. Spent the wealth that the future generation will needs to pay back. Personally, I received not one penny. Any of the women would be better than him
