What does small state Conservative mean? Does it mean just letting people fend for themselves?

The Times runs hatchet piece on Penny Mordaunt without mentioning the facts that her main rival, Rishi Sunak, was best man at the author's wedding, godfather to the author's kids and was old public school friend of the author.

The elevation of David Frost (sic) from complete Brexit failure to Tory party sage is one of the most bizarre side effects of the insanity that has engulfed our political and media ecosystems in recent years

The lie about Turkey joining the EU originated from Cummings, he encouraged MPs to repeat the mantra ‘NHS and Turkey’. I’m sure she wasn’t the only one to follow his advice.

That doesn’t make it ok though….and they were all happy to continue to defend Johnson’s lies for 3 years. I’m pretty sure they would have known about the goings on at No 10 as well.

I agree 100%, it doesn’t make it right but to single her out isn’t right when others were being encouraged to make this point by Cummings. I don’t know if she was more vociferous than others but she certainly wasn’t the only one saying this and the idea didn’t originate from her. I’m not a supporter of her by the way, I’m not even a Tory voter but I do believe in fair play.

Liz Truss wasn't making it , though. She campaigned for Remain grin

Yes. It's meritocracy on steroids and the devil take the hindmost. Turn the clock back at least 500 years.

I heard Liz Truss talking about reversing the NI and Corporate tax yesterday. What she didn't say is how we tackle the Social Care crisis. She wouldn't get my vote if I had one. I can't say I warm to any of them although from a selfish point of view, Penny Mordaunt may do a lot for Portsmouth which might help that area.

dragonfly46 Fri 15-Jul-22 11:39:28

I cannot stand Liz Truss - she went to my school and has slagged it off ever since!

pascal30 Fri 15-Jul-22 11:42:43

seems like you can't be in this government if you have ethics. it's truly toxic

Kyliemay Fri 15-Jul-22 11:43:24

Don't care. I still think Penny is the best candidate. I am making my own mind up, and no amount of spiteful media spin will change my choice. Agree with Karma Lady, any of the women would be better than that back stabbing ex chancellor!

hazel93 Fri 15-Jul-22 11:46:07

God protect us from Liz Truss !

Nannashirlz Fri 15-Jul-22 11:48:11

Body readings woman on tv other night said same thing about rishi too that his body language was saying he was also lying after his speech. Guess we will just have to watch and wait and hope that the ppl who can choose pick someone who wants to help us and not themselves

Aveline Fri 15-Jul-22 11:48:19

Interesting how much briefing is going on against Penny M. I like that she's a refreshing change from Boris's lot, is articulate and has some practical experience.

Dreadful situation with none of the candidates an ideal choice for PM. It seems from many interviews that I have heard that MPs are more interested in which person can win the next GE for the Tories than who would be the best Leader Of This Country! Party politics again with the electorate left out of all considerations! And none of the overpaid and underwhelming interviewers had the guts to challenge them on most of the flummery they spoke. If only we had a decent Opposition instead of the woke joke that is the Labour Party these days whose vitriol towards the ruling party takes the place of constructive debate and actual policies!

Kyliemay Fri 15-Jul-22 11:48:51

Remember, political manipulation to smear a candidate can worm its way even onto this site. Be aware!

Kyliemay Fri 15-Jul-22 11:49:56

She's got them running scared,

Kaggi60 Fri 15-Jul-22 11:51:33

I think they all lied some also had fines for the party when I was in hospital I couldn't have any visitors people forget what they did at the start of lockdown

Ilovecheese Fri 15-Jul-22 11:51:48

Small state=
Fewer health professionals
Fewer education support workers as well as teachers (as suggested by one of the candidates)
Fewer and less well trained social workers
Ditto police officers, firemen and women, etc.
Dirtier rivers.
Less health and safety regs
Less rights for working people.
Less courts so more delays in the justice system.

RichmondPark Fri 15-Jul-22 11:57:08

The Labour Party policies are available for all to read on their website. Dismissing the range of policies as 'woke joke' is not a particularly well thought out argument.

I can't imagine how difficult it is to be in opposition to this squirming, lying, cheating, corrupt, winking, amoral, self serving, hand-in-glove with the media, inept group of people that make up the front bench of the Tory party.

Which politician started the lie culture. I first took notice when Harold Wilson was PM. Then I noticed Denis Healey. The list goes on to Tony Bliar and Gordon Brown. It must be in a job description to be a politico. But then, these puppets have someone pulling the strings anyway. And the rich just keep getting richer.

X2 sides to every story..

Aveline Fri 15-Jul-22 12:08:11

Lord Frost isn't exactly in a position to comment on her!

Caleo Fri 15-Jul-22 12:09:22

None of that lot is credible!

Nannina Fri 15-Jul-22 12:22:10

As usual the contest is getting dirty with contenders, their supporters and self interested newspapers dishing the dirt on each other. Unedifying and bodes badly for the new government
