Is Liz Truss channelling her inner Margaret Thatcher?

Just watching the first leadership debate on Channel 4 and can’t help cynically wondering if Ms Truss is sporting that huge bow because she wants to be seen as Thatcher-like. Any thoughts? (This is a light-hearted comment so hopefully no one will criticise me for focussing on trivia. I am listening, too, and am pleasantly surprised so far at most of the contributions. But happy to hear comments on other aspects of what I believe are called the ‘optics’.)

My first thought too Kate54!

vegansrock Fri 15-Jul-22 20:03:29

Definitely. The pussy bow blouse is so Thatcher.

Kate54 Fri 15-Jul-22 20:14:10

Whereas Ms Badenoch is echoing Kate Middleton!

lemsip Fri 15-Jul-22 20:14:40

I agree, Liz Truss's voice has no power in her voice and needs speech training like thatcher had....

I think they’re going to start punching each other soon….

Tom Turgendhat. ‘Is Boris Johnson a liar’. ‘ Yes’ …..

the sky news section (paper reviews) said this last night, she is trying to turn herself into a mini maggie...lol, they were saying the one that people should be worried about is penny mordaunt, even though she was fired from her goverment job, they think she might overtake sunak. coming from scotland i can't say i am botherd who wins but i think sunak would make a better pm.

They are all a bit hopeless.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 15-Jul-22 20:19:50

Blimey what a bitchy lot they are.

Joseanne Fri 15-Jul-22 20:22:01

I can't see anyone of them winning the general election in 2 years time.

I liked that bit best so far!
Truss’s pussy bow blouse is very MaggieThatcher , as was that fur hat she wore in Moscow - just wearing your Mum’s high heels doesn’t turn you into your Mum though.

Truss looks silly dressing like that - a deliberate nod to Mrs T.

Rishi very annoying - like the class smart-arse

Whitewavemark2 Fri 15-Jul-22 20:36:15

Not a single member of the audience said that they trusted politicians and only 3 thought the ideas put forward to ease the cost of living were sufficient.

None of the women are wearing the sort of statement necklace that Teresa May wore,

I said to DH - "oh look, Liz Truss is channelling her inner Thatcher"
Does she think that will help?

Rishi is far more annoying than I would have thought, smirking and interrupting the others.
We've had enough of smirks.

They are all a bit hopeless.
I like Tom

Thanks Maw, this made me lol.
Callistemon I agree, they’re all a bit hopeless and I like Tom a lot. He gives the impression he might be genuine - unlike any of the others.
KB strikes me as a very unpleasant yiu g woman, with an inflated idea of her own abilities

And, at the end, only five members of the audience said they would vote Conservative at the next election....

Penny makes me think of Cruella De Ville, I think she may watch the programme back and bitterly regret her sour expression, she has the warmth of a dead slug. I'm beginning to understand why they kept BJ going, this lot have the charisma of my local undertaker! I did love watching them squirm though, could we have four labour wannabees and Sir KS next week, it would be interesting to make a comparison. Oh and perhaps Ed Davey + 4 lib Dems the following week. My goodness, British politics is in a mess!

Kate54 Fri 15-Jul-22 21:40:10

And all this for the benefit of just 100,000 voters

I thought Tom Turgundhat facial expressions, mannerisms and the slow way he spoke put me in mind of a younger Tony Blair...Any thoughts on this????

mokryna Fri 15-Jul-22 21:56:32

LT didn’t look into the camera when giving her final speech

I think he’s like a character from a Jane Austen novel.

Penny M did herself no favours, umms and errs and evading the questions came across as shallow. Truss was completely wooden - how many times can she say the word “deliver”?Sunak - smarmy, Tom - was he in the army? Kemi - she has to control the eye rolling - she would obviously cut public services - superfluous staff in schools anyone? Tughenhat is the only vaguely sincere one and he hasn’t a hope - he’s too nice for the current Tory - Ukip mob. No mention of Brexit, funny that.
