Is Liz Truss channelling her inner Margaret Thatcher?

Just watching the first leadership debate on Channel 4 and can’t help cynically wondering if Ms Truss is sporting that huge bow because she wants to be seen as Thatcher-like. Any thoughts? (This is a light-hearted comment so hopefully no one will criticise me for focussing on trivia. I am listening, too, and am pleasantly surprised so far at most of the contributions. But happy to hear comments on other aspects of what I believe are called the ‘optics’.)

What the hell is spell check doing to Tom?

I thought Tom Turgundhat facial expressions, mannerisms and the slow way he spoke put me in mind of a younger Tony Blair...Any thoughts on this????

Poor Tom Tugendhat - you make him sound turgid !

I think he’s like a character from a Jane Austen novel.

Mr Darcy?

They keep telling us about the wonderful depth of talent in the Tory party. Then you look at this lot, who are presumably supposed to be the cream, and you despair.

So incredibly weird and creepy.

mokryna Sat 16-Jul-22 01:53:41

Not carried so well though.

so, we have mr turgid-hat (thank you maw)
and ms trussed-up-like-thatcher (for my view there watch the "pork markets" episode of hignfy).

This might all seem trivial, but the result will make it hard to convince the world that bj really was an unrepresentative mistake. This is important stuff, from which we'll be reeling for many years to come!

No pearl earrings though!

To coin a phrase All the gear and no idea
What ever you think of Margaret Thatcher she probably had more balls than any PM since.

riete Sat 16-Jul-22 07:43:09

should your statement rosie be copied over to one of the threads about the male/female divide and whether anyone has a right to decide for themselves how they feel and orient themselves?

Daisymae Sat 16-Jul-22 07:55:22

They seemed to have forgotten that they have been in power for the last decade. I thought that Tugendhat came across as credible. Liz Truss has obviously been studying Thatcher. Heaven help us.

Sago Sat 16-Jul-22 08:29:44

If Truss was Thatcher like then Sunak was definitely Blair like!
His delivery and hand gestures were reminiscent of a young Tony Blair.
Kemi Badenoch would get my vote, none of the others impressed me.

Iam64 Sat 16-Jul-22 08:32:57

Kemi Badenoch didn’t impress me at all. She seems to be over confident in her abilities and quick to attack Penny Mordant in a way that added nothing constructive to the debate

It’s like being asked to choose between the members of Westlife when you’re an Oasis fan.

Mr Darcy?

Yes. Or Dobbin from Vanity Fair. I do think he’s in politics as an act of public duty. Given that, as a party, I loathe them, there are several that I quite like eg Peter Bottomley. Tugendhat is very much like the Conservatives I campaigned with for a peoples vote. I just wish that, like one of those people, he’d jump ship to the LibDems. His wife’s family are very political, too. I think he is the sort of person that many people think they’re voting for when they vote Tory whereas, in fact ( imo) most of them have morphed from UKIP these days.

Is so interesting how we all see the same thing and reach different conclusions.

Kemi eye roller and kept checking her notes, she should be able to think on her feet.
Tom we do know he's ex Army, is another Rory Stewart, he won't go much further.
It's down to Rushi, Penny and Liz.

Next week all Conservative members get a chance to see the hustings of each one. This will be the decider who get the job, not these TV debates.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 16-Jul-22 08:56:15

All I took from that debate was “what have we done to deserve such a sad little lot of would-be PMs?”

Dinahmo Sat 16-Jul-22 09:44:09

LT constantly telling us that she'd been on missions and delivered - but no mention of any actual results. She should have seen a stylist to learn how to tie a pussycat bow.

In the 80s I worked in a large City office. Nearly all the women wore pussy cat bows and neat suits a la Thatcher. How I longed to see the back of them.

I think you're right about the 80's fashion Dinahmo add wasn't there a bit of the Diana influence there too? I'm thinking of her engagement blouse with a bow.

Love this! ??

Roll on an election.

Sago Sat 16-Jul-22 11:05:37

Is Tom ex army? He kept that quiet.

Athrawes Sat 16-Jul-22 11:07:41

Tom Tugendhat and Kemi Badenoch were my favourites out of a motley bunch - new blood. Rishi Sunak is clever but I don't 100% trust him

Grantanow Sat 16-Jul-22 13:18:04

If she is, she is not very good at it! She was the worst performer on the Channel 4 debate last night by a long chalk. Tom Tug was the best but he has no chance with the Tory MPs.
