Is Liz Truss channelling her inner Margaret Thatcher?

Just watching the first leadership debate on Channel 4 and can’t help cynically wondering if Ms Truss is sporting that huge bow because she wants to be seen as Thatcher-like. Any thoughts? (This is a light-hearted comment so hopefully no one will criticise me for focussing on trivia. I am listening, too, and am pleasantly surprised so far at most of the contributions. But happy to hear comments on other aspects of what I believe are called the ‘optics’.)

I actually thought Kemi came over rather well - and I liked her choice of apparel. Takes guts to wear a bright yellow dress when all around you are wearing boring black or navy jackets. I'm afraid none of them convinced me they would make a good PM though. Kemi lacks the experience, Tom T is likeable but played to the audience rather too much for me and Penny M gave the impression of being somewhat bossy and patronising as well as lacking in humour. Liz T was terribly nervous and rather timid, reminding me of Theresa May rather than Margaret Thatcher, despite the blouse. As for Rishi, well, he has the confidence but somehow he lacks the charm.
Can't the Tories do better than this?

I’m fed up of Kemi going on about doing a menial job when she was a student. Her family are very well to do but she makes it sound as if she had to fund herself through uni.

I'm fed up with Tom T going on about his time in the military. And Rishi Sunak is trying to make out his inlaws are not as rich as they really are. Penny Mourdant was better tonight and so was Liz Truss but she's coming over as rather desperate now.

She's been coming out with that McDonalds story since she was first selected. She had a part-time job while she was in the sixth form, just as many sixth formers do. She actually had a gap year before school and uni, when she attended an exclusive transition programme. I doubt very much that she funded that herself. She also used to claim that she had to walk miles for water when she was growing up in Nigeria.

She grew up in Lagos - there may have been problems there but I'm sure she wouldn't have been trekking miles through the bush to a dirty waterhole, carrying a water jar on her head.

I'm fed up of them treating us as gullible.

The more I see of Keri Badenoch, the more I mistrust and dislike her. Last night she claimed one of her jobs included cleaning toilets. This I’m an ordinary girl who had to finance myself is offensive nonsense. It’s also no surprise she is supported by the dreadful Gove.

Liz Truss looks ill, she’s pale, tired and anxious looking. This isn’t a put down, it’s a comment based on the impression she gives.

Sunak is slick. The way he described his father in law’s earned wealth was slick. I’m not sure he isn’t the best of a bad bunch?

Tom T remains my favourite candidate. I expect he’ll be out later today

Penny Mordant is interesting. She retaliated with fire to KB’s accusations. One to watch

I agree Callistemon. I know somebody who was brought up in Lagos and, like most middle-class families, they had their own bore hole. He told me they had their own generator too.

She's always claimed that Nigeria was in the grip of "socialists" when she was a child. However, when she was growing up, Nigeria was controlled by military dictators. Life was unpleasant for many people, but that was the result of rampant corruption and the feuding of the leaders - not socialism.

My cousin lived there for very many years, not even in a larger city like Lagos and I never heard her mention trekking for water.

Ironically, I think it's because we all have a stereotyped view of Africa and thinks we all think life is like those films from famines in places like Ethiopia. It's racist to think like that, as well as not recognising that Africans often have a different background from West Indians - and, even then, Africans themselves are very different. They can be as racist, tribal, bigoted, class-conscious, right/left-wing as anybody else.

I know somebody who canvassed against her when she stood for election in Dulwich (?) in 2010. At the time, she did emphasise racism in the UK and claimed she'd been a victim of it. She was angry with the ethnic minorities who didn't support her because they thought she was looking down on them. That was before she latched on to being an anti-woke warrior.

KB's father was a GP and her mother a professor of physiology who lectured in the US. I cannot believe that she didn't have running water at home. She attended two fee-paying schools in Lagos. Definitely a privileged up-bringing, however much she attempts to play it down. I see that Gove is giving her his support - does he see a bandwagon gathering speed?

tbh I am finding the whole thing deeply depressing. I think it's madness for any party to air it's dirty linen in public and to encourage it's MPs, who are a possible PM, to attack each other on a TV programme like this. Words fail me! I think we spend too much time considering their charisma and personality, I just want someone competent who will steer this country out of the current mess we are in. Sadly I don't think potential leaders of the LP, should KR resign, would fare any better in this situation.

I agree Iam64 she didn't look well, or perhaps it was poor make up under the lights. I was disappointed in her performance.
Have said that I applaud her for having been the first to pull out of the next debate, Skynews I believe, because of all the pointless sniping. That shows a positive.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 18-Jul-22 11:42:32

Tory headquarters has stopped the debate, because they consider that the candidates are putting on such a poor show that it is doing the Tory party harm.

I would suggest that many people are beginning to wake up to the fact- they don’t need a debate to show the party up.

Riverwalk Mon 18-Jul-22 11:44:02

I'm not sure it shows a positive Joseanne, more not performing well when under public scrutiny so withdrawing.

All of any of them (Tom T aside) they've done is repeat mantras and it's not going down well with the public.

Riverwalk Mon 18-Jul-22 11:54:06

Reminds me of Bozo in the 2109 election, bottling out of his interview with Andrew Neil; the much-maligned Corbyn went ahead as did the other leaders.

Joseanne Mon 18-Jul-22 12:08:31

Didn't Teresa May refuse to take part in any televised debates at all? Sensible person in my opinion.
