Is Liz Truss channelling her inner Margaret Thatcher?

Just watching the first leadership debate on Channel 4 and can’t help cynically wondering if Ms Truss is sporting that huge bow because she wants to be seen as Thatcher-like. Any thoughts? (This is a light-hearted comment so hopefully no one will criticise me for focussing on trivia. I am listening, too, and am pleasantly surprised so far at most of the contributions. But happy to hear comments on other aspects of what I believe are called the ‘optics’.)

Sago

Is Tom ex army? He kept that quiet.

He talked about how his injured army colleagues were cared for by NHS hospitals when back in the UK and thanked the NHS for that. This was just before he mentioned his two children and again thanked the NHS. Finally, he said that his role in the army had meant he was used to organising and leading teams.

Surprised you didn’t know Sago.

With Johnson still in charge, he will do his best to make sure Tom Tug will not be on the shortlist ‘cause he told the truth about lies.

He was in the Army Reserves but got called up and served in Iraq and Afghanistan I think, Sago
So he's a war veteran.

Oh ?

Lucca Sat 16-Jul-22 15:50:30

He does mention it quite often…..

Callistemon21 Sat 16-Jul-22 15:51:39

Perhaps I should take more notice of them all.
But I can't change anything, not yet, anyway.

Me too.

I liked what he said on the retreat from Afghanistan but I am unconvinced by what they say he says about policies for the UK.

Sorry Sago?

I hope that Liz Truss will not be chosen. Nothing to do with pussy cat bow blouses though, as they are very popular nowadays.
I thought Kemi Badenoke spoke well, also Penny Mordaunt.
I thought Tom T uninspiring and did not like Rishi Sunak at all.
Some candidates are better than others at playing fair with each other.
I do think the new PM should not have been close to Mr Johnson.

From what I've read it looks as though Johnson is planning to run the show from the back benches... ?

Let it go, let it go
Can't hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door

(Sorry)

I’ve just read in the DM on line, that senior tories want Johnson to resign as an MP when he stops being
PM in September.

When Tom T thanked the female doctor in the audience for giving him his two children - I had to smile (as did the doctor). It didn’t quite come across as he intended it too. Embarrassing. Back to the matter in hand, I’m not convinced that any of the 5 have what it takes to become PM. We shall see soon enough.

Rumour mill, then?

He's just trying to keep his name in the public eye..

I always think "Who would Putin or China respect?" and it wouldn't be Liz Truss or Penny Mordaunt.

No-one!

It is obvious now why the Tories kept Johnson in office as leader far longer than his sell by date.

There was always a suggestion that there was no one to replace him, and that is now crystal clear.

The Tories need to step out of government and have a long period of introspection and renewal.

Joseanne Sun 17-Jul-22 11:02:46

I agree Whitewavemark2, that none of the five showed any sort of presence or appeal. In fact they were unmemorable.
Boris certainly didn't exude charm or charisma (not for me anyway), but he was a personality.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 17-Jul-22 12:22:54

??? is anyone there?

Joseanne Sun 17-Jul-22 12:23:59

Another flooppy tie blouse!

Prentice Sun 17-Jul-22 12:27:38

But this claim about no charm or charisma is also levelled at Sir Keir Starmer.
Does a PM have to have those attributes to govern well?
Were there good PM’s in the past who were excellent in their jobs but were not a bubbly personality?
Is this feeling that a PM needs charm or to be a character a sign of the celebrity driven culture nowadays?
