So. The person who is likely to be our next Prime Minister told the party faithful at a hustings in Exeter that the best thing to do about Sturgeon is to ignore her. When told by the moderator that NS was democratically elected to her position, Truss said NS is just an attention seeker. Cue lots of excited clapping and cheering.

This is the woman who is meant to be our senior diplomat, who will be in the company of world leaders. NS was elected by 48% (or so) of the electorate of her country, Truss will inherit the job by getting the votes of something like 0.03% of the electorate. Ignore Sturgeon, you’re ignoring half the population of Scotland and telling them that you know better what’s good for them.

It’s the number one story up here but I don’t know how much its being reported in rUK.

Last week I called her a Welsh carrot. (You had to be there wink) But it seems I over estimated her. She’s lost the place, as we say up here.

I can really understand why Scottish people would want be be independent but I would be sad to lose Scotland as part of the UK... and I do like Nicola Sturgeon, infinitely preferable to Liz Truss

Scots aren't taken in by this type of language (as they weren't by Johnson) so I wouldn't worry too much about it. What is more worrying is that the Prime Minister is elected by a minority of the electorate, that is people who pay to join the Conservative and Unionist Party.

Perhaps her father, who was a university professor, managed to pull strings?

varian Thu 04-Aug-22 15:39:38

Truss has belittled her old school which by all other accounts was a very good school. Listening to her now it makes me think what an amazingly good school it must have been for a person who appears to have such limited intelligence to get to Oxford University.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 04-Aug-22 15:39:05

The Independent is reporting Truss is facing the first sleaze investigation relating to “murky donations”

Bibblebibbleblop Thu 04-Aug-22 15:34:51

@kadinsky calling someone an attention seeker is meaningless really-it’s a retort used by someone of limited intelligence when they can’t form a good argument. It’s applauded by those who like the sound of it as it’s bullyish, dismissive and insulting ( in much the same way Trump performed). But what does it mean? NS is doing her job, obviously that requires she courts a certain amount of attention. To imply she lacks a credibility because of this is obviously illogical and ridiculous- it’s actually moronic. Do better.

She's lost the plot. Doesn't know how to act in public. Even wants tax cuts greater than the NHS budget. Shows how low the Tories have sunk that it's the best they can do.

Petera Thu 04-Aug-22 15:08:18

Casdon I think you mean England Petera, not the rest of the UK. Only England charge for prescriptions.

Yes I do, apologies.

Just some of the reasons Truss would be a terrible PM

She's a joke. I've seen photos of her at meeings with heads of state and ministers from other countries and they seem to have their backs to her and to be just ignoring her. She certainly has no gravitas or substance.
I'm appalled at the thought of her as prime minister, far worse than Boris or May.

Casdon Thu 04-Aug-22 14:54:00

Petera

Amelegra as has been pointed out on these threads many, many times, we have these benefits paid for by our taxes because we elected governments which decided that that would be a good way to spend our taxes.

It's also worth pointing out that free prescriptions are actually cost-neutral, and in fact some studies have shown save money.

So perhaps the Scots should complaining that the rest of the UK are wasting their taxes by charging.

I don’t think Amelegra has grasped the concept that devolved government means that other countries within the UK give their citizens a better deal on many aspects of daily life, how they spend what they get from the UK Government is up to them.

Hilarybee Thu 04-Aug-22 14:46:34

Sounds like Liz Truss is actually describing herself

Jazzhands Thu 04-Aug-22 14:07:33

Amelegra - why do you put up with it then? Why not challenge the Government to provide English citizens with those things?
Why not?

Jens Thu 04-Aug-22 14:05:52

It will be a sad day for UK if Truss wins, I think she will because basically they won't want Rishi Sunak. Truss is a Johnson hanger on, he will try and govern vicariously through her! What s mess.
It's time for the electorate to elect the PM not the party members. Yet another blue arsed idiot it just not needed. The country isn't going to the dogs, it has gone, when weak chinned so called upper class run it down as they have, it's shocking, just shocking. At least Nicola Sturgeon talks sense, the Tories don't like that especially when it's a woman and oh dear me, not english! Heaven help us

Petera Thu 04-Aug-22 13:57:35

Amalegra we should not sink to the levels that Scotland’s FM often has.

For example?

Amalegra Thu 04-Aug-22 13:55:12

Let’s face it Nicola Sturgeon herself is no paragon of democracy, nor in any way an accomplished (or honest!) politician. As English ( the worst of all sins!), I’ll probably be lambasted for saying that! I do think it was silly and undiplomatic of Liz Truss to speak in that way; we should not sink to the levels that Scotland’s FM often has. Sometimes I would love there to be a referendum right away on Scottish independence ! In England! Then we really could really find out how many English people think it is fair, when we all pay the same taxes etc, more per head is spent on the average person in Scotland? Why free prescriptions, no tuition fees and various other benefits are more generous? And why, there being all manner of unaccounted, as well as just plain foolish, spending by the Scottish administration, Nicola is demanding 41m extra funding from Whitehall! Now I call THAT disrespectful!

Tinydancer Thu 04-Aug-22 13:37:28

South of England non Tory here. I find Liz Truss totally deluded and definitely not up to the job of PM. Sunak is not much better but at least he doesn't come across as quite as batshlt as Truss.

FarNorth Thu 04-Aug-22 13:37:11

None of the above. sad

esky Thu 04-Aug-22 13:37:03

Actually, we don't up here think that NS is an attention seeker. We might disagree with her policies and I do, despite being pro-independence, but I would never characterise her in that way. For those down south there is value in understanding Scottish politics as we seek to create a better nation. I am positively FOR a country of fairness, equality and well funded public services....much in the mould of Nordic countries.

FarNorth Thu 04-Aug-22 13:35:30

Note : in the Scotland screenshot, you'll see mention of Part-time Fee Grants.
These are available, from the Scottish Government, to people on benefits or low incomes.

pascal30 Thu 04-Aug-22 13:33:42

Dickens.. couldn't agree more..you were much more polite than I would have been..

FarNorth Thu 04-Aug-22 13:31:03

In Scotland, there is free University education; whereas in England, students are saddled with debt for years. Why aren't English students protesting - why do they accept this as okay?

Open University courses are also subsidised by the Scottish Government .
Here are screenshots of the charge for the same course, if it is taken in Scotland or England.
