Why is Boris still PM if he's going to do no work?

Just that really. Is he only remaining as official PM to get paid? Because if he has no intention of working, surely he should be taken off the books, as any of us would be if we absented ourselves from work.

nanna8 Tue 16-Aug-22 07:13:37

I still don't get why he didn't just leave immediately and let the deputy PM take over. Assuming there is a deputy. What if he had died? There must surely be some sort of provision there. What a shocker he is.

Lucca Tue 16-Aug-22 07:19:27

The deputy would have automatically taken over if the PM had died.

Parliament is in recess (they are all on holiday!). I am sure he is in daily contact with his office. Still never miss a chance at a bit of Boris bashing (wasn't Starmer pictured on holiday recently?)

Oh the tired old “Boris bashing” comment plus irrelevant Starmer comment. Starmer isn’t PM.

vampirequeen Tue 16-Aug-22 08:04:44

It's not really Boris bashing to ask why he's not at Downing Street when the country is in crisis. He's welcome to take a holiday but not when he's needed at work. As some of us have said earlier, our fathers had to leave us on holiday or cancel our holiday when they were required at work. It's even more important that our PM does that. Starmer is not the PM and doesn't have the same responsibilities.

The Starmer comment was a reply to Beckett who posted on Monday 15-Aug-22 09:42:31, saying that he was also on holiday.

Oh the irony of the PM being absent for weeks, while the not-PM is present and working.

Says everything about Labour (Dictionary: work hard, make great effort) versus the cons (deceive or trick someone).

Lucca, I'm an idiot. Please ignore my comment.

I know ! That’s my point,

I'm sorry to bang on from my holiday perusal of French newspapers, but today I read that Macron and Boris last week had another long telephone conversation about the joint efforts in Ukraine and how both leaders need to up the momentum to support Zelensky. Also a conversation about immigration, "encore" says the report which suggests it is getting tiresome.
So there must be some work going on, overseen from the top, even if those in charge are soaking up the sun. I do, however, agree that it looks as though Boris has pretty much thrown in the towel.
Interestingly, Macron has used scholastic language about his holiday saying it is a "pause studieuse" and that he will be ready for "la rentrée" come September. Maybe back in the UK the 4 day week for schools suggestion is indicative of how Boris views his own time spent at the desk.

Oh I wish (Gafa!) Lucca.

I've recently been much slobbered on by a friendly, affectionate Lab, Casdon so those seem to be the main attributes.

Actually a lot more dogs are called Boris - is that significant do you think? (Mine isn’t, obviously!).

Joseanne Tue 16-Aug-22 09:56:29

Talking dogs, will the hairy sheepdog in the photo be living in No 10 soon? I assume he belongs to Liz.
I think they are comical, and are used for herding the flock.

14th August - holidaying in Greece. Presumably in fathers villa.

11th August - Johnson turned up at a meeting with the energy bosses. Nothing was decided

3- 10 August holiday (paid for by unspecified donor) in 5* eco hotel.

Throughout July he held a number of bashes paid for by various donors. Too busy to attend cobra meetings or make any decisions.

And we are paying this b…..d

The majority of the U.K. has worked remotely for the best part of two years.

Westminster is on its annual summer recess.

Westminster is on it’s annual summer recess.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I thought every employee is entitled to paid leave, in other words holidays.
If he was making decisions that’d be wrong, if he isn’t, that’s wrong.

vampirequeen Tue 16-Aug-22 11:00:10

People are entitled to paid leave but some jobs require that you come back off leave early if necessary (see earlier posts). Johnson has that sort of job.

There is a post on this thread that explains what a recess actually is.

We are talking about the premiership of nations totalling something like 70million souls, who are experiencing the biggest rise ever in energy, the biggest drop ever in the value of wages, the country facing a recession if not a depression, a health service in absolute crises, a country in drought, railways in crises, inflation etc, and you think that a leader is entitled to go on holiday!!

Civil servants have to cancel all holidays if deemed necessary.

We deserve better than this.

Wheniwasyourage Tue 16-Aug-22 11:07:32

Yes indeed, vampirequeen. Still have vivid memories of having to come back from holiday as DH had to go back to work in an emergency. It turned into a horrible summer with him having to work stupid hours to cover what was needed, but the whole family just had to get on with it.

Parliament is in recess for about 16 weeks over a year. Do these posters seriously think that this is all paid annual leave?

GrannyGravy13 Tue 16-Aug-22 11:45:47

MaizieD recess just means that Parliament is not sitting

With modern technology it is not necessary for anyone to be sat at their desk in order to work

Dinahmo Tue 16-Aug-22 11:50:11

Mamie

I think the point is that if a head of state or PM is at an official residence they can still carry out the full range of their responsibilities. I am not sure that wandering (ineptly) round a Greek supermarket provides quite the same opportunities.
Theresa May visited Macron at the Fort de Brégancon when PM. It is a wonderful historic fortress near Bormes-les-Mimosas right on the Mediterranean.

Apparently the Fort can be visited when the President isn't in residence. A friend taking a holiday in Provence a few months ago visited it - an amazing location.

Have you ever heard a saying about teaching grandmothers to suck eggs?

It's the optics, you know. People might feel a lot more reassured if the PM is in the country and appearing to be concerned about the several crises we are experiencing. I think it's called 'displaying leadership'.

And the fact that this is the government that insisted that people working from home during the pandemic return to their desks PDQ once they'd declared the pandemic to be over...
