Why is Boris still PM if he's going to do no work?

Just that really. Is he only remaining as official PM to get paid? Because if he has no intention of working, surely he should be taken off the books, as any of us would be if we absented ourselves from work.

MaizieD recess just means that Parliament is not sitting

With modern technology it is not necessary for anyone to be sat at their desk in order to work

I think that the point is, wherever the government is, it is absent from governing.

It is paying lip service to working remotely but that is all, there is zero evidence that anything is being achieved.

Apart from suppressing evidence etc.

Pure coincidence I’m sure

“The son of a Conservative donor who hosted Boris Johnson's wedding party has received an £11.2 million UK government grant to build hydrogen buses”

I think the point is that if a head of state or PM is at an official residence they can still carry out the full range of their responsibilities. I am not sure that wandering (ineptly) round a Greek supermarket provides quite the same opportunities.
Theresa May visited Macron at the Fort de Brégancon when PM. It is a wonderful historic fortress near Bormes-les-Mimosas right on the Mediterranean.

Apparently the Fort can be visited when the President isn't in residence. A friend taking a holiday in Provence a few months ago visited it - an amazing location.

That is why I do have sympathy with ALL our PMs and their exotic choices of holidays. Blair used to escape to Tuscany, Cameron to Ibiza, Theresa May to the Italian Lakes. Chequers is, I am sure, a beautiful place with a huge estate, but holidaying in the Chilterns doesn't really compare with being on the Mediterranean with sunny weather, good food etc. Unfortunately British PMs are hard done by on that front, especially if they want to feel energized from their summer break.
I think it was only Thatcher who considered holidays a distraction from the primary task of running the country, and look what happened to her!

I think you've missed the point of this thread completely, Joseanne.

I don't think we really care where Johnson takes his holidays.

It's the sheer quantity of holidays that he takes and the completely inappropriate time at which he has taken this particular two, in quick succession, that is annoying people.

It's how you tell 'em!!

I think Starmer's teeth baring is cold legalese. At least he's rational (even if I'm not a fan). No one could ever accuse BJ of being rational.

I think Keir is a lot tougher than most people realise. And we need someone who thinks logically and pragmatically but puts peoples lives and well-being first at the moment.

He’s now planning to spend the rest of his time at Chequers. Imo Chequers is all that he’s ever wanted.

If the removal vans are at Downing Street then seems the sensible option

To be fair, I always think how cringeworthy it is for a deposed PM and family to have the press thronging round the door of No10 to catch the tears. I’m glad we have been spared that. I just hope there’s time to get a cheap paint job done before the next incumbent arrives, I doubt anybody could live with that horrendous wallpaper.

Wasn’t there some sort of problem at Checkers before he was PM? I think he has a bit of an obsession with it. Wonder if he’ll squat there. He’s obviously not planning to do any more work.

I expect there is a pretty simple explanation security
He is still PM

My thoughts exactly. He squatted in the foreign office after he was sacked from the job.

If I might be permitted to join the current discussion about residences, as opposed to holiday destinations, without it causing any trouble, where will Boris reside after Chequers?
There's a 3 bed semi in Hillingdon come up for rent today, £2,200 a month. Nice wallpaper in the lounge, plus leather sofas to slob about and have parties. A garden for the kids and Dilyn, and wait for it ...... a cabin for that all important home office for Boris to work in.

Callistemon21 Tue 16-Aug-22 18:17:40

And very convenient for Heathrow if he wants to pop overseas occasionally, Joseanne!

Still not getting it, Joseanne. It was never about holiday destinations. It was about holidays. This is not a Chat thread...

Joseanne Tue 16-Aug-22 18:35:23

Well, I did include the work word in my final sentence, MaizieD!
I'm not so daft as to not know what the thread is about, but if others can chat about wallpaper, dogs, toilet rolls etc. what is wrong with my contributions?

GrannyGravy13 Tue 16-Aug-22 18:38:29

Please do not be put off posting Joseane
your contributions are just as valid as anyone else’s.

Something happened at Chequers though. An incident with Carrie and someone who worked there and left because of it. But it might be my memory playing tricks.

Not forgetting that Johnson had already had a holiday in Slovenia.....

And a few days in Cornwall not long ago...

Thank you GrannyGravy13, the laugh is that other posters, MaizieD herself, started chatting about holiday destinations before I even mentioned them!! grin

I was referring to the number of holidays he'd taken so far this summer. The destination was irrelevant.

StoneofDestiny Wed 17-Aug-22 11:54:08

Why? Because he could care less about the population of this country - he partied through Covid and lied to Parliament remember. He could have gone on holiday in a couple of weeks when he isn't paid to be PM, but no - he is doing this to prove a point - 'stuff you'.

The comparison to draw between him and his hero 'Churchill' is the two fingered gesture he is constantly showing to us all - though he's even got the direction of that wrong too!

ShepherdC Wed 17-Aug-22 12:13:35

why would he actually leave when we are paying him a lot of money and he does not have to do anything for it. He also needs to stay so he can knight all his friends.
