Why is Boris still PM if he's going to do no work?

Just that really. Is he only remaining as official PM to get paid? Because if he has no intention of working, surely he should be taken off the books, as any of us would be if we absented ourselves from work.

DianneAngel Wed 17-Aug-22 12:32:06

Tilly Trotter, that would be more real work than he has done while in office.

Happilyretired123 Wed 17-Aug-22 12:56:49

Well Liz Truss has said British workers are the slackest but not sure if she would include Boris Johnson in her definition of “workers”

The majority of the U.K. has worked remotely for the best part of two years.

Westminster is on its annual summer recess.

Really! Really! Can't believe I am reading this sad

Sadly, I can believe I'm reading it.

What part do you not believe?

Westminster is in recess (definition neither the House of Lords or The Commons have to go to the Palace of Westminster for debates/votes)

MPs do far more than tip up at Westminster they have constituency work, they are in contact with the committees they are involved in, it is not and has never been no work for he whole of any recess

Several of our local MPs have been extremely busy here in my part of the U.K.

How do you know he’s doing nothing just because you can’t see him don’t mean he’s not. He’s got his phone in his pocket and laptop near by. No one else is on show. He’s just come back from his belated honeymoon. What you going to do when he’s left in a few weeks still find a reason to moan about him lol some ppl make me laugh ?

Prime Ministers get paid to the end of their life, I don't know why. Boris has made such a mess of this country, from a Brexit which was not what he said it was (remember the bus? Also, vows we'd still have access to the single market and not loose any of our privileges) the next PM doesn't look like they'll be any better. Roll on a general election when we can vote in a Labour/Lib/dem team

All I said was that I believed I was reading it. How was that an answer?

Hobbs1 Wed 17-Aug-22 13:28:30

Personally I think the state this Country is in at the moment with strikes, ever increasing energy bills, high inflation etc etc, ALL the MPs should be at work, not on Summer recess, trying to find solutions to help the people who vote for them, rather than sunning themselves on holidays, it’s an insult to families who are struggling.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 17-Aug-22 13:32:21

Petera there are posters on GN who still think that MPs go off on their holidays for the whole of every recess , as I am not a clairvoyant I have absolutely no idea if you or Fleurpepper are part of that cohort.

Callistemon21 Wed 17-Aug-22 13:34:47

Prime Ministers get paid to the end of their life
Really? Or is it a Prime Ministerial pension?

Of course, he will still continue as an MP.

Nannina Wed 17-Aug-22 13:39:07

Not much change- he’s not done that much for the country whilst in office except wheel and deal to feather his and his cronies nest. Supporters cite the vaccine but that was down to Kate Bingham and the NHS and as for the Ukraine war I believe any of the political parties would have reacted the same. Of course Boris might be hanging on to get his salary and install another 59 peers into the House of Lords!

We know, because Number 10 confirmed last week that he was not working, and would not be contacted unless something urgent arose.

Apparently nothing relating to the country being in a drought, floods as that ends in some places, inflation at 10%, the NHS on its knees, and utility prices set to double count as important to him.

Still laughing?

Still

Of course, he will still continue as an MP.

"Pensions of Prime Minister and Speaker

(1) Any person who has (whether before or after the passing of this Act) been appointed Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, or elected Speaker of the House of Commons and has after 1st April 1972 (whether before or after the passing of this Act) ceased to be the Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, or ceased to be Speaker, as the case may be, shall, subject to the next following subsection, be entitled to receive a pension under this section.

(2) No pension shall be payable under this section to any person so long as he is in receipt of any salary payable out of the Consolidated Fund or out of the revenues of the Duchy of Lancaster, or so long as he is in receipt of any salary payable out of money provided by Parliament other than a salary or allowance payable out of moneys so provided in respect of his membership of the House of Commons.

(3) Subject to section 31 of the Act, the annual amount of a pension payable to a person under this section in respect of the office of Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury shall be equal to one-half of the annual amount of the salary payable in respect of that office at the time that person ceases to hold it.

(4) Subject to section 31 of this Act, the annual amount of a pension payable to a person under this section in respect of the office of the Speaker of the House of Commons shall be equal to one-half of the annual amount of the salary payable in respect of that office at the time when that person ceases to hold it.

(5) Any pension payable under this section shall be charged on and paid out of the Consolidated Fund"

Water shortages, energy shortages, massive inflation, rising interest rates, soaring inflation, recession looming, Brexit a total mess, strikes, corruption, sewage in our waterways, polio making a comeback , migrants landing on our shores in droves, oops - he’s doing a fine job getting all the big calls right etc- can’t believe anyone still trots that one out.

I was responding to your response to Fleurpeppers response to my post, hopefully that is clear enough for you.

Petera Wed 17-Aug-22 14:02:27

No sorry, still not clear.

Joseanne Wed 17-Aug-22 14:13:18

It was clear to me, and I understood it like that GG13. There isn't much one can say in defence of Boris or the current government, but in this case your explanation fitted. Unfortunately it was bound to attract derision and criticism by the nature of the thread.
As I see it GG13 was responding to Fleurpepper ........ and no doubt got sidetracked trying to defend my "missed the point" post?

Joseanne Wed 17-Aug-22 14:14:53

But neither am I a clairvoyant.

AngelaGran Wed 17-Aug-22 14:26:28

Boris is probably using up his leave and a caretaker government will have to be paid as well. I don’t mind him taking his leave.

Lizzie44 Wed 17-Aug-22 14:41:31

It was reported that Boris and Carrie's first dance at their recent 1st wedding anniversary bash was to the song "Sweet Caroline". More appropriate would have been "Sweet Fanny Adams".

Joseanne Wed 17-Aug-22 14:44:21

Or Bing Crosby's:

We're busy doin' nothin'
Workin' the whole day through
Tryin' to find lots of things not to do
We're busy goin' nowhere
Isn't it just a crime
We'd like to be unhappy, but
We never do have the time.

I am sure that I have read somewhere that Caroline is Carries given first name
