It sounds worrying, doesn’t it?

merlotgran Sat 10-Sept-22 19:31:26

Petty issues Iam?

It was great to see the four of them together again but William and Kate will be well aware that Harry’s book has yet to be published.

Deaths throw up difficult moments in families who are estranged - I am sure there are people on this site who can confirm that. It was good that they all did that walkabout together.

I am sure there were wrongs on both sides: the royal family's rigidity as regards "outsiders" being required to fit in with their own protocol (remember the abdication, poor Princess Margaret, Diana); and H & M being a bit too outspoken about the things that had caused them pain.

It is not possible to take sides, even if one might wish to, but the media have whipped it all up for their own ends.

Let us just be content that they did come together in public and hope for better in the future.

I’m glad they came together, even if it was just for show. I have no insider knowledge about the matter.
My estranged younger brother refused to come to my Dad’s funeral because his other siblings were all going to be there. Other mourners were fortunately too polite to comment on his absence. Can you imagine the comments on GN if H&M had not joined? Who would have been blamed?

Callistemon21 Sat 10-Sept-22 19:51:34

Perhaps the Queen's last wishes for the family were the same as those of my Granny (who I do not remember, unfortunately)

"Be kind to one another"

‘A bit too outspoken’ must be the understatement of the year Luckygirl.

You just can't give it a rest, can you! sad

Archie is a Prince now, wonder if his parents will do the same
as Anne and Edward did

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 10-Sept-22 19:58:44

Thanks for that. So kind.

Maybe somebody can explain to this confused Republican. Now that she is Princess of Wales, what is Kate's new role? What are her new responsibilities?

I think it's rather like being eg Mrs Jones in a way.
Supporting each other in their work.

Supporting the Prince of Wales in his role, as he may take on some of his father's charitable causes.
Working with charities, continuing with those they already set up and strengthening connections with Wales?
Deciding which charities she may like to support in her own right, perhaps taking up some of those which were dear to the last Princess of Wales?

Will there be a ceremony I wonder.

Pantglas2 Sat 10-Sept-22 20:06:42

The Queen was the exemplar on forgiveness and reconciliation over the decades of her reign - visiting her uncle David, shaking the hands of IRA members, treating Fergie well, welcoming Camilla into the fold and indeed stating that the Sussexes were still much loved members of her family.

William appears to have learned many lessons from her and it is to be hoped that the Duchess of Sussex can do likewise.

merlotgran Sat 10-Sept-22 20:07:45

remember the abdication?

Without Wallis Simpson we wouldn’t have had the Queen.

Sometimes rigid protocol gets it right.

How useful and modern. (sarcasm emoji)

Has anybody asked the Welsh?

Pantglas2 Sat 10-Sept-22 20:14:18

“Has anybody asked the Welsh?“ volver

What, all of ‘em? Not another bluddy referendum!

You forget that William and Katherine lived on Anglesey for many years before their marriage and were very well thought of for the way they conducted themselves. No media interviews, moaning about stuff...

Callistemon21 Sat 10-Sept-22 20:17:40

What, all of ‘em? Not another bluddy referendum !

What about those of us who were born in England but spent over half of their lives in Wales?
Are we allowed to vote?

Callistemon21 Sat 10-Sept-22 20:18:58

You asked a question and I answered in good faith, volver

Why the sarcasm emoji?
Or can't you help it?

I hadn't forgotten. I'm not sure I ever knew. ?

‘Ey oop’ The Queen’s been dead three days.

2 days.

Perhaps you should mention that to the people intent on having a go at Public Enemy Number 1.

Best ignored really, merlotgran
Indulging makes it worse.

Wait for "I'm reporting your post" ?

Were they living in sin? ?

Sorry, back to the purpose of the thread. Thoughts about the late Queen.

"Be kind to one another"

Indeed, my two brothers are very different, and they fell out about 10 years before my mum died. She left a letter asking her sons to try their hardest to reconcile their differences and be kind to each other. All conjecture, but maybe The Queen did the same, either in writing or orally. As any loving mother and grand-mother would.

Callistemon21 Sat 10-Sept-22 20:30:31

It has made me reminisce about my parents and grandparents (whom I didn't really know) and stories my mother told me. That was one I do remember.
I think most parents would wish for their children to remain in friendly relationships with each other, if they have more than one child, and to the rest of their family.

sodapop Sat 10-Sept-22 20:39:29

I agree Merlotgran Kate I thought pointedly ignored Meghan although William did chat to Harry. At least the four of them were there together which is a start.

Anyone know the exact date and timings of HM Queen's lying in state in St Giles Cathedral please?

From the "Edinburgh News" dated Friday 9th Sept -
"It has been reported that members of the public will be allowed into St Giles’ Catherdral to file past the coffin when it resides there for 24 hours in about three days’ time."
